Description:
My friend Karen and I made our annual pilgrimage to the NW Garden and Flower Show with an early evening dinner break at Tom Douglas' new pizza joint, Serious Pie. We arrived at 5:15. By 6 the joint was packed. It is small, shared tables and a cozy feeling. The slate front of the metal woodfired oven is an impressive shot as you come in the door and the restaurant backs on to the Dahlia Bakery's bakery with glass windows. It was too late in the day for watching, but I'll come back for lunch to watch the bakers ate work.

The pie? Sublime. Thin but sturdy crust, a little less chewy than my favorite point, but great flavor. We split a roasted beet salad and a caramelized onion, gorgonzola and rabe pizza - olive oil, no red sauce. It was rich, I could taste each ingredient. Our very nice waiter said "I you are hungry you should each get a pie." With salad, we were very happy with one (except for coveting our neigbors' pies. I wanted just a bite to try the other pies!)

The salad was yummy but could have used a bit more salt and pepper. The red beets were the best. The almost white beets had a great texture, but much less flavor. So I'd go with the flavor over the visual appeal of the two colors of beets. It was lightly dressed in olive oil, a winey vinegar (not enough for my taste - I like the bite) and chopped mint.

We were both pretty tired so we split a glass of wine - a nice pino grigio whose name I forget. I know, two middle aged women SPLITTING a glass of wine? Well, if we had both gotten one, we would have both finished our glasses and never made it through the flower show.

Here's the kicker. Our waiter poured our wine into two half glasses. That was the capper to a very nice evening meal. Thanks waiter guy - you were the little bit that made a big difference.
