Igloo City: A four-story foam igloo a while ago
1 People have been here:
Description:

When you're driving between Anchorage and Fairbanks and you pass the four-story igloo made out of spray foam, you know you're about halfway to where you're going.

As far as landmarks go, it's a damn weird sight. Alaskans don't live in igloos, despite what you may have heard (igloos were only ever used as temporary shelters during hunts by Alaska Natives, so Alaskans have never lived in igloos), but this igloo was built in the... '60s? as a hotel.

But then the developer ran out of money, leaving a four story igloo with no real foundation and no fire-exits, and it was never opened to the public. Until 2004 there was at least a gas station there, but the staff there told me they had so much trouble finding people to man it that they ended up closing it and making the pumps credit card-only.

I used to show people from Outside these photos, and tell them it was my residence hall at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, my alma mater.
