Description:
Superior desert wilderness camping and hiking along the non-potable Santa Catarina Springs (Coyote Creek). Best visited within a day or so of rainfall for optimal ocotillo bloomage. Get there by heading east from Borrego Springs, Christmas Circle on Palm Canyon Drive for 1/2 mile, then left on DiGiorgio Road. Continue of dirt road (any vehicle will at least get you to the Lower Willows). After that, 4x4 only. As the paved road ends and you enter the desert, roll down the windows to smell the citrus groves. Heaven on earth. Desert Garden a few miles down. See rare desert birds and big horn sheep hiking further into Collins Valley. Heavy chollo cactus so stay on paths. Water is mandatory. Vehicle access past the lower willows closed in Summer to allow big horn sheep to prosper. Excellent mountain biking trails through Collins Valley. Sheep Head and Cougar Canyon are excellent 10 mile day hikes from the Lower Willows.
