Philadelphia Daily News: "Smullen had been attacked "by a knife-wielding thug who hacked her repeatedly in her chest and throat.

"Police suspect she knew her killer and might have invited him inside unwittingly. Despite window bars and an alarm system, there was no sign of forced entry. A video camera mounted at the entrance to an elementary school across the street yielded no clues.

"Robbery was the likely motive because, police said, some things were "not in place." Investigators suspect the killer may have picked his victim because of her age and infirmity. Smullen had grown increasingly reclusive in recent years as Parkinson's disease symptoms and other age-related ailments took their toll."
