Both of my mother's parents plus a couple of my great-grandparents were born in Columbus. If I had to name one place in the country where I had the deepest roots, I'd say Columbus even though I've never lived there myself. Columbus is home to the largest infantry training base in the US, Fort Benning. Columbus is also the largest city in West Central Georgia. It was built at the head of navigation on the Chattahoochee River.
