Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington
Description:
Seattle's premier weekend escape may be "discovered", but don't let the crowds keep you away. The gorgeous vistas are reason enough to make the trek here. The pace of island life and the friendly people will do wonders for your stressed soul. Find a quiet bed and breakfast, bring a good book, and sample the local wine. The town of Friday Harbor makes a good base for exploring the other islands. If you're fit, rent a bike and bike around San Juan Island, taking in the ocean vistas and historical sites. You can also try a guided kayaking tour or go whale-watching. Make sure to visit Orcas Island's Mt. Constitution for one of the most jaw-dropping vistas I've ever seen.
The four main islands are connected by frequent ferries. The Washington State Ferries are crowded and on peak weekends in the summer you may have a long wait if you're driving your car. Ditch the car in Anacortes and walk-on to the ferry with your luggage - stress and hassle free! If you're really adventerous, take Amtrak from Seattle or Vancouver BC to Mt. Vernon, then take the local bus system out to the ferry terminal in Anacortes. You can also take the ferry as a walk-on from Victoria, BC. We found traveling without a car surprisingly refreshing. Be prepared for the higher cost of living on the islands and consider picnicking for breakfast and lunch to save money for a nice dinner.
