While packed with swarms of pushy tourists and tour buses, and overrated by all the guidebooks and tourist propaganda, the Butchart Gardens are still interesting and beautiful to wander. If you have an interest in photography or gardening, then this is a must-see. I lost my husband to his camera for 3 hours. While I longed for a romantic walk together through the lush rose arbors and tranquil Japanese garden, his camera was permanently afixed to his face. To avoid the hassle of renting a car and dealing with parking, take the Gray Line bus shuttle from Victoria's bus station, near the Empress Hotel. Also pack your nerves - the hordes of older tourists blocking the paths and views will take some of the magic away from your experience. Avoid weekends!
