Description:
Emei Shan is a sacred mountain in Sichuan Province. I visited the mountain in 2006 with my then boyfriend Andy. We spent two exhausting days climbing the mountain and met a very friendly, generous and funny group of Chinese students who were very concerned about us old and overweight Americans. We spent one restless night on the mountain in a monastery and were kept up half the night by a thunderstorm that echoed in the valleys. We were threatened by macaques at a temple called Elephant Bathing Pool, but the macaques were chased off by a tiny woman carrying a very large bamboo stick. She meant business; the monkeys knew she would beat their asses if she caught them and they scattered, shrieking. We were rewarded for our efforts with an amazing view and a huge golden temple at the mountain top.
