Description:
A gunman or gunmen fatally shot an 18-year-old woman -- identified by friends as a student at Eleanor McMain Secondary School -- as she sat in a blue Volkswagen in Uptown Sunday night. A 19-year old man was also wounded in the shooting.
New Orleans Police arrived at the scene about 8:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Amelia Street to find the 18 year-old victim dead from multiple gunshot wounds, said Officer Garry Flot. Late Sunday, chief coroner's investigator John Gagliano identified the victim as Darielle Rainey.
A friend of Rainey's at the scene, along with a classmate, said Rainey was a junior at McMain. Orleans Parish School Board Superintendent Darryl Kilbert couldn't be reached late Sunday to confirm whether Rainey attended the Uptown school.
The shots that killed Rainey and wounded the unidentified 19-year-old came from a red Dodge pickup truck occupied by several people, Flot said. Police found the 19 year-old lying on the sidewalk near the car, Flot said. Police said the people in the Dodge drove away.
