Description:
Five people were wounded in four separate shootings, one person was killed and nine armed robberies were reported across New Orleans over the three-day holiday weekend.
The busy weekend for police coincided with crowds in the city for the Essence Festival. But this year's event triggered fewer arrests than last year and the violent crimes reported were far from the Essence activities.
In all, 96 people were arrested in downtown New Orleans over the weekend, compared with 168 arrests over the same festival weekend last year, New Orleans police said in a news release. The fatal shooting occurred Sunday about 3:20 a.m. in the 2300 block of A.P. Tureaud Avenue in the 7th Ward, according to the NOPD, which released details Monday of the incidents.
Mervin Simon, 22, of New Orleans, had an altercation inside the Duck Off bar with two other men. The two suspects followed him outside and shot him as he walked toward his vehicle. He was shot in the chest.
