Description:
Information here is taken from the book Magnificent Corpses by Anneli Rufus/

The Church of Saint Ursula has a reliquary containing bones from the cemetery upon which it was built.

The legend of Saint Ursula is that she was supposed to marry a pagan king but convinced her father and her fiance to allow her and 11,000 virgins to make a pilgrimage to Rome beforehand. This would take three years and in that time her betrothed would convert to Christianity.

The story goes that when she and the girls returned from Rome, they were met at the shore by a horde of Huns who slaughtered them all. The girls were all decapitated and Ursula was shot with an arrow.

Ursula and the virgins were collectively canonized and their feast day is October 21.

The bones in the graveyard were dug up in 1155 by an abbot named Gerlach. He is the one who advertised them as belonging to the 11,000 virgins.

Early texts about Ursula mention fewer maidens in her company. 11 rather then 11,000.

The reliquary of the church is walpapered with skulls. They have girl-shaped reliquaries with heart-shaped cut-outs through which you can see the bones.
