Description:
This was my first apartment in San Francisco. Moved here after I broke up with my Italian boyfriend and came back to the states in 1999. The house was awesome. This was before the Lower Haight got all hipsterific. I remember my godmother drove me to the open house to meet the housemates and she didn't want to let me out of the car. The house was next door to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, which had a glowing neon cross that would shine into my bedroom window. The bar across the street, which is now a trendy little dive called "The Page" was still "Chances" back then. We had it to ourselves whenever we wanted it. I had two roommates, Tim and Tools. Tim had lived in the apartment forever, so the lease was under rent control and he pretty much paid nothing to live there. I think I paid $550/month for my room. Tools was a tool. I don't remember what his actual name was. He really called himself "Tools." One night I got up to pee and ran into his girlfriend butt naked walking down the hallway. Awkward. The apartment had a pool table. It had belonged to Tim's grandfather. It was kind of a crappy table, but we all sucked at pool so it never bothered us much. No one ever used it except when I would throw pool parties and invite people over. It was dot com heaven back then, too, so everyone had cash, and we all drank a lot and did drugs. After Tools moved out, my BFF Rob moved in. We'd known each other since 1st grade, but this was the first time we had been roomies. We both lived in the house for about a year before I left to move in with my future husband and Rob went to New York to live with his future wife. So, at least we gave up our best living situation ever for good causes. The other amazing thing about that house was that when I first moved in with 2 guys, I insisted that we hire a cleaning lady and split the bill. Some of the best money I've spent was on Rosie, god bless her. I have been pining for her ever since.
