Description:
These two bayside preserves are remnants of a grand scheme to create a subdivision that would have resembled the city of Venice, Italy (complete with canals and gondolas). Thankfully, the plan failed, as did several subsequent development schemes. Today, the trail around Santa Margarita Island and the path atop the levee at Santa Venetia Marsh are favorite paths for local residents who wish to enjoy a walk or jog along a clear, level path. Birdlife is abundant here; waterfowl cruise the channels at high tide, while shorebirds and rails search along the muddy edges when the waters retreat.
