a good friend of mine lives in beirut, he's lebanese, grew up there during the 1970s conflicts, but has a very international approach to life, living since then in Paris, Rio, and New York on several rotations. I have been in contact with him since the recent attacks by Israel, and here is what he has to say:

well, i'm still here... :-)
all the people i know moved to their families in the mountains...

many are trying to get out...
speacilly foreigners & "war newbies"
who are very freeked out...

the city is very quiet... like 4 sundays in a row...
the car pollution has disapeared, i can smell the flowers...
deep slience... and every few hours, huge explosions...
VERY close, like 2km... I jump from my chair,
and then I calm down again...

i was suppose to leave for 3 weeks on a boat in Grece... today!!!
it was planned for months... so i'm selfishly pissed off about THAT...
cause I worked x2 knowing that i'd be leaving now...

otherwise, it is maybe safer to stay still...
but on the other hand...
this might develop and become worse and worse...
we'll see...

maybe is Israel is harsh and wrong 'from the beggining'
but Arab countries suck so much more...
& I hate Lebanon's political life so much since 15 years
that I don't know what to think...

maybe this country deserve it in a way...
as long as the job is "finished"...
by breaking the Syrian regime & maybe nuking Iran if they reply...
so that maybe we can start working here...
