Have you ever tried hitchhiking out of the San Jose area? I wouldn't suggest it. Got dropped off here from some friendly driver from Santa Cruz. Anytime I would step foot onto the highway some "friendly" highway policeman would march back off the road. When I finally did get a ride it was only to their weird compound because they thought I was waiting on the side of the highway for work...to they put me to work in their weird car lot/junk yard/backyard sorting scrap metal until they walked away and then I ran away.
