This relative newcomer is a tribute to the fashionable Smithfield restaurant quarter of London. The atmosphere is relaxed, waiters friendly and the wine list extensive – what more could anyone ask for? Well, I guess a wine shop would be nice, and what do you know, Vinoteca has this too. How often do we taste a wonderful wine in a restaurant and then promptly forgets its name as soon as walking out the door. It’s fantastic to be able to sample a number of great new wines accompanied by a wonderful meal, and then purchase your favorites before promptly forgetting. A wonderful place and certainly worth visiting (repeatedly).

Reservations (OpenTable.com) One of my favorite California cuisine restaurants...great mix of food, with really interesting flavor pairings you'd never expect. The chef mixes in a bit of creole and soul food with excellent prepared meat and fish dishes. A couple of my favorite dishes are: * Barbequed Shrimp, Worstershire and parsely garlic sauce (starter) * Sweet onion and blue cheese fondue with fingerling potatoes, asparagus and cauliflower (starter) * Faith's warm Smithfield ham and cheese toast with poached egg and jalapeno cream (starter) * Sauteed day boat scallops with smoked andouille sausage jambalaya, basmati rice and crab butter * Slow-roasted duck with toasted wild rice, pecans, spiced dates and gingersnap gravy Great wine bar as well. Some great choices: * Rose, Jean-Luc Colombo, "Côte Bleue", Côte-du-Rhône, Rhône, France, 04 * Tempranillo, Rioja, 2002 (this was one of my favorite wines)

Wine Bar Extrordinaire (I hope I spelled that right). Bar Divani has an amazing wine & beer list as well as bourbons, scotch, etc. I never had a bad moment there. They had a small food menu the last time I was there and considering the kitchen they had to work with (in a basement on the other side of the building) they did a really good job. They have a slick decor as well, with wine bottles and such imbedded in the floor and backlit. Go and enjoy!

Willi's Wine Bar, while their name does not suggest it, is also a fantastic restaurant, specializing in classic country style French cooking. Excellent meat, Foie Gras, vegetable dishes and stews. One of the best no frills Parisian restaurants in my opinion, steering away from heavy or innovative sauces or preparation techniques, just classic preparation with wonderful natural flavors being brought to the surface. Make sure to take a walk through the Jardin du Palais Royal, it's a must see on a warm sunny day.

WHY WE LOVE IT: At the back of this well-stocked bookstore sits a schizophrenic eatery. By day, a charming coffee shop that makes a mean carrot cake, sends out and superb sandwiches and soups and frothy lattes. But at 4 p.m., the space is transformed in to it becomes a sophisticated wine bar
with sophisticated internationally-inspired small plates fare and a nice by-the-glass roster.

WHAT TO GET: Sweet potato bisque or chicken cilantro soup when available, and the spicy samosas.

What a great place to go on a date, or with some girlfriends. They have a wonderful selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass, plus they serve some nice dishes to compliment the wines. Not really a place to go to dinner, but you may want to stay all night. Sit on the saddle and talk to a stranger... trust me.

The menu is presented on a simple blackboard, offering 2 options for each of the six courses (the courses include a soup, entree, seafood, meat, cheese and dessert usually). Also, don't forget to try the Cave de l'Os a Moelle across the street before or after your dinner...this neighborhood wine bar is a gem, serving family style serve yourself buffet style country food (foie gras terrine, pickles, preserved meats, lentil stew, etc.). You can eat a full meal casually if you like at the wine bar, but it's not the same food as the restaurant across the street. Their number is 01 45 57 28 28.

Modern, Italian wine bar. Good place for a light meal and some wine. Big contrast to other local Portalis, but both are great. Depends on your mood. Portalis is more laid back but Divino has a much larger menu. Service has been inconsistent.
