Nobelvagen 73

At 18:00 we met at the Pa Besok a recently opened bar following the trend and looks of the bars located around Mollevangstorget, which is a very attractive and expanding area. But this bar is the first to cross Nobelvagen, which has become a border for where this area ends and a new begins. This bar then becomes a symbol for the next area to be gentrified and how and by whom this process will start. It becomes very obvious when we are sitting here that we are very much part of this process. Especially in this case when we are here with the intention to map out our local terrain and talk about how or what these sites means and functions in relation to our different engagements. We have no set route from the beginning and after talking and marking on the map we decide upon three different areas to visit. We have no specific theme in mind only this one idea, to walk between very different areas and talk about both the actual crossing and passing through the different layers in the city, and how these different sites and layers relate to each other and to us.

Where do we begin? Which walk do we choose to do? What kind of map are we producing and for whom? How does these sites relate to our different practices? How does our different practices shape and effect these sites?

The Approach Tavern, Approach Road, Bethnal Green

It's getting very, very cold so we decide to leave.

We walk across the canal and continue, passing beneath one of the main carriageways leading out of London. On the other side of the subway tunnels, we pass by some East End housing estates and head towards the well-kept and very organized space that is Victoria Park. We manage to make it through the park just before the gates are shut and locked at 8:30pm.

Having passed through the park, we head towards the heart of the East End and Bethnal Green's Approach Road, where we sit down in the heated beer garden of The Approach Tavern. End of the walk. 9:00pm

Railway Bridge, Temple Mills Lane

After a couple of hours we have to leave the sunny Temple Mills slope and head towards Stratford. We cross the cycle tracks and pass through a council estate (or housing project). Out on the main road, on a bridge across the river or railway, we find graffiti sprayed onto the red brick wall: 'just riot - arts not dead'.

We turn right and pass through parts of the centre of Stratford. Just after 6:00pm we arrive at Stratford Station and meet up with two new walkers.

Temple Mills

We walk from Hackney Wick Station towards Eastway and follow the busy carriageway east towards Lea Valley. Having passed the river and a canal running alongside it, we turn right and head south towards Stratford, across the cycling club track and into the green areas around Temple Mills.

We find a spot in the sun, on a slope overlooking central London: to the south, Stratford, further in the horizon the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the Docklands area; to the west, the City of London towers up; an abandoned housing project just to the east of us; massive industrial sites and empty land in our more immediate surroundings; to the north the busy A12 carriageway.

Introductions and brief practice presentations are followed by general discussion.

1. London: Global City; Gentrification, the Olympics 2012, 7/7, Multi-Culturalism.

What is this space? What is this space that we have traversed to get here?

It's got the distinct feeling of being the periphery of the city, a kind of non-space surrounded by motorways, industrial sites, empty land, but, of course, this is also the site of the 2012 Olympics Games and there is huge economical and socio-political investment in the redevelopment and regeneration of the area; a kind of investment that seems linked not to the periphery of the city, but it's most central point, to centrality itself, to the idea of London as global city.

The day after London won the Olympic Bid, the tube and bus system was targeted in the 7/7 attacks. The detonation of the explosives were quickly followed by the simultaneous establishment of a dominant political rhetoric emphasising 'multi-culturalism' and our 'sticking together in these difficult times', and increasingly intensified forms of local and global socio-political and cultural control and surveillance.

These are two images that unfolds in different ways in the landscape around us: London as a global city, united in multi-culturalism and a common sense of belonging, and London as a highly volatile social formation, fraught with contradictions and the remnants of centuries of capitalism and imperialism. (And it is pointed out that the concept of multi-culturalism dates back to the British occupation of India and the strategic repression of any resistance to the British colonial regime by the governing body posing one group against another in a rhetoric emphasising, systematizing and utilizing cultural difference as a form of control.) What does the juxtaposition of these two images, and these two events, imply?

2. Interventions and the politics of space.

What is space? What is the nature of space? Is all space social? Is all space political? Has all space got a politics? Is all space practiced, functional? Has all space got a set of dominant – and perhaps not so dominant – functions?

What is the parameter of a practice seeking to intervene into space? Does all use of space involve or open up to a notion of intervention (an intervention, say, into its dominant functions)? Do we intervene into space when we rupture the texture of its habitual uses, the practices that seem to constitute it socially, politically, culturally? Do we intervene into space when we break or displace our habitual movements, actions and reactions in space; the normative or dominant experience of space offered to us?

What is the relation between an intervention, a practice of intervention, and the proposed notion of (post-) autonomy? Does every intervention involve a level or degree of autonomy? Does an intervention, in the sense of a rupture of a dominant function or experience, always involve a moment of autonomy, as in auto and nomos, the establishment of a new, other or different nomos from within an existing terrain, from the practice of rupturing itself in the sense that the rupture also opens up to something 'new' (new, other or different forms of use; new, other or different forms of practice)?

3. Practice, participation and collaboration.

What is the value of the notion of the audience, of a practice that operates within the discursive space constituted by the notion of the audience? How does the more contemporary concept of participation and participatory practice relate to this? What is a participatory practice? Nicolas Bourriaud talks about relational practices in a way that seems very linked to a notion of participation, but what is the politics, the institutional politics, of this kind of practice (what participatory relations are being generated by and in these practices)? Are there different notions of participation available to us; notions of participation that perhaps more successfully engage with institutional and cultural politics?

Does the notion of collaboration, and the notion of cultural micro-scenes, that we perhaps see in some recent – and some not so recent – forms of artistic practice, constitute a break with this kind of participatory paradigm and open up to a more political project dealing with (micro-) chronotopes (to paraphrase Bhaktin), prototypes for new forms of sociality and conviviality, the generation of particular kinds of intentional communities, specific affective experiments and experiences?

Why is it that we presume that art must reach out to the widest possible audience? Why can art not simply involve a semi-permeable / semi-open scene of different kinds of collaborators? What, if any, is the link between this demand for inclusiveness and the politically totalizing space of liberal capitalism in Europe? To what extent does this model of cultural organization rely on watered down versions of earlier European social democratic, and often equally totalizing if not worse, cultural policies?

4. The event, documentation, representation.

What is the status of documentation in relation to intervention or event based (or other forms of more transient, non-object based) artistic practice? At what point does documentation run the risk of designating the death of the actual event (of the event)? Or in other words, at what point does documentation become the object in itself, or even the practice in itself? What are the problematics and issues of representation (in general as well as specifically as documentation)?

Is there a form of documentation that is more open and less authoritarian than more traditional forms of documentation (and the document)? Can we conceive of more productive notions of collaborative documentation, or process based documentation; a kind of remix or editing practice? Do new media technologies tend to provide us with useful tools in this respect, or are they too often stuck in their own seductiveness, novelty, or in the demand for technical know-how they pose on their users?

What is the relation between the narrative of or around the event and the event itself? Is the event possible, in this sense, or is it secondary to the politics of representation (as documentation, as narrative)? Do we have to engage with and intervene into this process and these narratives rather than – or as well as – with the actual events to which they refer? Is it perhaps politically naïve to dismiss this notion of narratives and focus only on the event, or the intervention, outside of its text, narrative, mythology or representation?

5. The ethical trajectory of artistic practice.

What is the ethics of an artistic practice? How does it relate to questions of inclusiveness? How does it relate to the political space of liberal capitalism? Is this a point where we need to make a clear distinction between ethics (and an ethico-political project) and morals, or morality (in Friedrich Nietzsche’s sense)?

Is there something valuable in Alain Badiou's notion of the event, and the idea that ethics is based around a fidelity to the event? Is this something we can 'translate' from the rather traditional notions of art he relies on (in the 'Ethics'), to more contemporary forms of artistic or aesthetic practice? Can we talk, for instance, about the event of collectivity, and subsequently an ethics of fidelity to, at the very least, the potential or the possibility of collectivity?

(For a continuing, albeit very brief, discussion of ethics and artistic practice see the text for Canal Lock, Stratford Marsh.)
Tags: ccred, walktalkeattalk, walk, walking, london, postautonomy

Map this on Platial

Lacy Park, San Marino

This is the best public park I've ever been to, period. It's small enough to let kids run wild without worrying about whether they'll ever return, but peaceful enough to feel instant relaxation. There's a wide path for bikes, scooters, etc. that surrounds a hugh manicured field. It's like having a Huntington Gardens you can play in! There's also a nice playground, tennis courts, and a small rose garden. Great place for a picnic, and in the summer there's a concert series. Warning: there's a fee for non-residents on the weekend. Also, parking can be a little tough, but it's worth it! Perfect for all ages.
Tags: recreation, san marino, pasadena, biking, walking, running, tennis, gardens, lawn, parks, relax, park, playground, baseball, places, fun

Map this on Platial
The first flag is put down, we drink wine and start talking.
Old warehouses, small industrial businesses, workshops but also a lot of empty spaces. We talk memories connected to this site – illegal parties and bars – being to gigs etc. This is fairly far from where we met an area kind of still untouched both by the dominant cultural industries and investors. When we are talking about this site the question arises; how do we document the dialog we have? We talk about the possibility of stating a question to the site or to come up with a concluding comment or maybe only a word. We leave the site and start walking to the next still with no conclusion, more than we feel this is an attractive area, which probably means that we soon will start the process of transforming this area, preparing it for the investors and the capital. A kind of scary thought but although the reality, the question is then: What can we do about this? How do we relate to this fact? What is there to be done? What does it mean? To us and to everybody else not having the capital to invest and secure space and for whom the only option left is to continue move further out.

Greenway Walk, off Pudding Mill Lane, Stratford Marsh

We walk from Stratford Station along the main road taking us west, through the centre of Stratford and towards the East End. We pass some shops and pubs, abandoned industrial sites, a council estate with tall tower blocks just to the south of us, the industrial deserts of East London to our immediate north.

We turn off the main road and head north along the Greenway Walk – an council funded path through the industrial wasteland – and walk along a raised path overlooking piles of different kinds of London waste; the City and central London towering up to the west of us, beyond the industrial sites, dumps, and factories.

At one point we turn off the path and walk through the graffiti landscape between a number of industrial units out onto a desolate road with rows of burnt out and smashed up cars, mountainous piles of tires, waste and broken glass spread across the tarmac.

For the discussion of this site and the Greenway Walk, see text for Canal Lock, Stratford Marsh.
Tags: ccred, london, walktalkeattalk, walk, walking, postautonomy

Map this on Platial

Free Easter Jelly Beans

On Easter Sunday I went for a long walk. I found a fish pinned against a chain link fence, and then this - a paper plate filled with jelly beans sitting on the bench within a bus stop. A tongue depressor held a small sign that read "Happy Easter", and written on the lip of the plate it read, "Happy Easter. Enjoy some jelly beans." It should be noted that this was down the street from the local methadone clinic, and across the street from a bar called The Vern.
Tags: travelers and record, red76, psu, walking, se, vern

Map this on Platial

Walden Pond

Thoreau's hang out, Walden pond is a popular swimming beach. There's plenty of parking and plenty of kids. No dogs allowed, unfortunately.

From the website:
The area is popular for fishing, swimming, and walking. To protect the natural resources of the area and ensure that Walden Pond remains a pleasant place for people in the future, the number of visitors is limited to no more than 1,000 people at a time. Dogs, bicycles, floatation devices and grills are prohibited. To avoid disappointment, visitors are encouraged to call the park in advance and check on parking availability. A replica of Thoreau’s house and the location of his modest home are available for viewing by the public. Year round interpretive programs and guided walks are offered as well as The Shop at Walden and the Tsongas gallery. Specialized Equipment includes portable FM listening systems for park programs and a beach wheel chair for access to the beach and water.

Pleasure Bay

Owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, this area provides an abundance of recreation and historical learning opportunities for the visitor. Accessible from downtown, the HarborWalk extends along Pleasure Bay, with a detour to Castle Island. Pleasure Bay is a calm, enclosed lagoon with a sandy beach for swimming. Pleasure Bay is one of the most popular swimming and sunning beaches in the City. Foot showers and water fountains are located on-site. Because the bay is fully enclosed by the man-made Head Island Causeway, water and sediment quality are consistently high. The causeway located behind the beach provides a great walk way for strolling around Pleasure Bay.

Originally freestanding, Castle Island has been connected to the mainland since the 1930s, when streetcars brought bathers to Pleasure Bay. Fort Independence, located on Castle Island, is a five pointed granite structure. The current structure is the eighth fort to occupy this site and contains over 172,687 linear feet of hammered stone and was constructed under the direction of Colonel Sylvanus Thayer between 1834 and 1851. The fort is open during the summer months, and visitors can explore independently or take a free tour. The fort and the island are on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and Fort Independence is a National Historic Landmark. There are views to Logan Airport and the Harbor Islands, and visitors can observe boating activity in the Harbor. The area is excellent for jogging, walking, picnicking, biking and hiking, and there is a fishing pier and swimming area.
Tags: beach, swimming, kites, walking, sun basking, sun

Map this on Platial

Walking/Listening/Recording (sound installation)

Walking/Listening/Recording: Tryon Creek (2006) is a 10-channel sound installation set along the Trillium Trail in Tryon Creek State Park, Portland, Oregon. Along the initial 250ft passage of the Trillium Trail, speakers from hidden locations cast layers of found sounds interwoven with poetic murmurs and field recordings from around the Red Fox Bridge area in the park. William Stafford's poem "Walking with Your Eyes Shut" inspired the use of poetry in the piece - to form a dialogue between the visual and audible experience. These layers of sound are intended to engage visitors in a sonic narrative along the trail.

Sunset Beach to Newport Beach

Orange County is blessed with more than 40 miles of some of the prettiest coastline in the country. What better way to see it than by taking a leisurely bike ride? The wide, paved bicycle path runs from Sunset Beach in the north, through Huntington Beach, and into Newport and Balboa Beach to the south. Although it's a 15-mile trip each way, most cyclists just go part of the way, stopping frequently to watch the surfers, have a snack at a beachside food stand, or to enjoy the gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. Summer weekends are especially busy, when the bike paths are shared by bicyclists, inline skaters, and people jogging or walking.
