Vivian made Chambord (the brown ones) and Kahula (the white ones) truffles for a party today. She made about 50 of them. The women at Caitlin's Venus Tea Party went through all but the ones here which ... now we get to eat at home!

Ototo Sushi

On the 2nd of May 2007

Went to Ototo Sushi with Vivian to try the place out. She'd been there before and reported that the staff was unskilled but the food was very good.

That highly mixed review piqued my interest so we sauntered up there last night in a state of starvation.

The have a fairly nice Sake list. Three or four Junmai Daiginjos to choose from.

We had softshell crab (spider roll) and their special Ototo roll with lobster.

We also picked up a robata plate which had some excellent bacon wrapped scallops (small), yakitori (okay), and salmon (very good).

Their Chicken Karage was not worth repeating

Their Yam tempura used North American golden yam and not the white asian yams. As a consequence, they were chewy and overly sugary.

The sushi was phenomenal though. Very nicely made, well balanced.

We'll certainly go back. We'll go Nigiri next time.
Tags: washington, japanese, sushi, seattle, vivian lam, three stars

Map this on Platial

Kaosamai: Go Across The Street

Right across the street from Kaosamai is another Thai restaurant, the name of which I forget, but it's in a little house. It's really excellent.

Kaosamai ... well ...

Vivian picks up the menu after we sat down... "It's all white people Thai."

Jim ... "Well, maybe it's really well done."

Vivian looks skeptical.

The food comes ($28 for lunch) and it is nicely cooked, but utterly uninspiring. Vivian got the "Volcano Chicken". Which I was going to get, it was ... nicely cooked ... but it was breaded chicken with the Thai Sweet Spicy Sauce that you can buy in most stores. Nicely cooked, but ... not really worth spending your time and certainly not your $28 on.
Tags: seattle, thai, dont do it, washington, vivian lam

Map this on Platial

Szmania Restaurant: Four Stars in the Neighborhood

Szmania is a four star restaurant in the heart of my neighborhood - Magnolia in Seattle. It is a great restaurant with reasonable prices and a fantastic specialty drink selection. We go there once or twice a month, so there will be a lot of entries here after a short spell.

Last night Vivian and I didn't want to cook, so we walked up to Szmania for their early happy hour. We arrived at about 5 pm.

They have a set menu for happy hour with gets you an appetizer, main and dessert for $20. The nice drinks are also $2 off.

I had a Zentini which is made with green tea liqueur, Vivian had a drink with an orange peel in it. I forgot what it was.

For appetizer I had a heart of romaine salad with roquefort and pancetta. My main was their Jagerschnitzel, which is always enjoyable.

Vivian started with the goulasch and then had the mahi mahi.

We talked through the meal about Vivian's rapidly evolving plans for becoming a chocolatier. Earlier we had looked at temporary professional kitchen space and how things might look if she shared more permanent space with a friend who also makes chocolate.

Vivian's plan is solidifying. It's very exciting to watch it take shape and become real.
Tags: szmania, magnolia, seattle, chocolate, vivian lam, washington

Map this on Platial

Pair Restaurant: Zach's Birthday Dessert (International Zach Day 2007)

My god! Four restaurants in one day! Today I went to 663, Bakery Nouveau, Chiang's Gourmet and Pair! These were spread between Seattle's International District, West Seattle, Maple Leaf and Ravenna neighborhoods. And I went to Costco and Daniel Smith's in there too. Add blogging this stuff and packing for my trip to Los Angeles tomorrow and it's been a busy day...

After we ate Zach's Birthday Dinner at Chiang's Gourmet. We traveled over to Pair so Zach could eat their Chocolate Pot de Creme. I had the Flourless Chocolate Cake with some nifty soaked cherries (caitlin had this as well). Vivian had the Lemon Creme Brulee. Randy had the Apple tart. Eric didn't eat anything ... I think.

Pair's desserts are wonderful, as is their main menu. I'm sure we'll get back there so I can talk about their actual fare.

The service at Pair is always friendly and borderline sensuous. The atmosphere is very romantic. For some reason, the lighting and the decor make everyone very attractive.

I think Zach will be sending me pictures to post from the evening.
Tags: pair restaurant, dessert, seattle, zach lyons, washington, vivian lam, caitlin dundon, randy woods

Map this on Platial

The Night Before Chocolate Touchdown

We got into Ocean Shores this afternoon with a load of chocolates ready for The Cellar Wine Shoppe tomorrow. Tonight, however, we needed to eat and didn't want to heat the Sai Oak up by cooking. So we went to Home Port - hopefully for Prime Rib, but they were all out.

Prime Rib is pretty much an expensive midwestern American restaurant put here in Ocean Shores. The food is unremarkable and the prices are as high as a good restaurant in Seattle, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

The staff is always very friendly, the restaurant itself is very clean and well run. But ... the food is still unremarkable.
Tags: ocean shores, home port, vivian lam, **, washington

Map this on Platial

Saturday Night Dinner

Vivian and I spent the last night of our weekend trip eating at Arcadia in downtown San Jose. The food was wonderful.

Our Menu looked something like this:

Vivian -

Foie Gras Sliders - Caramelized onion jus, D'Anjou Pear Chutney

Creamed Spinach

Jim -

Bloomsdale Spinach with Quail Eggs, Pancetta, Hedgehog Mushrooms

8 Oz US Kobe Beef - medium rare - with green peppercorn crème sauce

Duck fat fries

Dessert -

Vivian - lemon souffle cake kumquat reduction and candied kumquat and fresh clementine orange

Jim - rootbeer float with sassafrass ice cream.

---

The spinach salad was a welcome treat. The Quail eggs were done very nicely. Not too much salt ... although with pancetta there's always a bit of salt...

My steak was perfectly prepared, I was very surprised. Perfectly seared on all sides and a nice red all the way through the meat. The sauce was tasty, but certainly optional.

The Duck Fat Fries were .... lickable.

And the desserts were also very good. Between the Sassafras ice cream on Saturday night and the Coffee Bourbon ice cream the night before ... I'm upgrading my ice cream maker.

Certainly recommended if you are in the area.
Tags: arcadia, san jose, california, bay area, vivian lam, ****, steak, fries, ice cream, duck fat, half moon trip 2007

Map this on Platial

Chinese New Year in an Italian Restaurant?

Vivian and I went to the seafood shop at Fisherman's Terminal and there were NO CLAMS.

It was Chinese New Year and you have to eat clams. If you don't, well, no luck for you buddy.

We wanted some luck, but our part of Seattle doesn't have any Chinese restaurants. So we ended up at Mondello to have their special seafood and linguine.

Not exactly traditional, but rules are flexible, eh?
Tags: mondello, magnolia, seattle, vivian lam, clams

Map this on Platial

Lunch with Vivian and Julie

Julie's new place is really nice. Her only issue seems to be the big crappy Chinese restaurant nearby - they have dances that are really loud, it seems.

Her dog is also terrified of the spiral staircase and won't descend. So he's an upstairs dog now. Yes, there are logical issues with having an upstairs dog. Let's not go there right now though.
Tags: mccormick schmicks, julie charles, vivian lam, washington, seattle

Map this on Platial

Wonderful Szechuan Food

I'm surprised this hasn't shown up on my map before.

Szechuan Bistro has amazingly good food. Like many other restaurants we frequent, it's family owned and we sure like them a lot.

This week, Ken Thompson was down from Vancouver. So he and Vivian and I went.

We had Gai Lan, Spicy chicken, hand shaven noodles with pork, and their monster pot stickers.

Trust me, this is at 85th and Greenwood in Seattle. You must must go.
Tags: ****, vivian lam, seattle, washington, ken thompson, chinese, szechuan

Map this on Platial

A Morning of Errands

Every so often we need to run errands in the morning. When we do we usually end up stopping off at the McGraw Street Cafe which serves great breakfast sandwiches and Cafe Appassionato coffee.

Today is a quick breakfast and working on the wifi with Vivian.
Tags: coffee, mcgraw street cafe, vivian lam, breakfast, washington, seattle

Map this on Platial

Thai Cafe: Hidden Seattle Gem

Kathy owns Thai Cafe and has been serving me wonderful Thai food for over 10 years. Family owned, very stable, very consistent. Good food, good people. I'm sure there will be many entries here.

And dammit, wouldn't you know I put it on the wrong street. It's actually on 20th and Market. I sure wish I could edit the locations of places on Platial.

Last night, Vivian and I had Eggplant Pork, spring roles, thai chicken wings, and Panang Curry with Chicken. For dessert we had her wonderful banana sticky rice.

Top Tier Chocolates at Donnelly Chocolates in Santa Cruz

On our drive down the coast we had one mandatory stop - Donnelly Chocolates. Richard Donnelly, who turned out to be a very helpful guy, makes some pretty excellent chocolates. Especially liquid filled ones - which are pretty hard to get right.

We picked up several, including Lemoncello and a nice Single Malt. He doesn't skimp either, the single malt was full strength and not cheap. I believe a nice aged Macallan. Very smoky.

As always, the geolocator didn't do a very good job, it's actually on the southwest corner of Mission (Hwy 1) and Bay Street.

Disappointed at Tamarind Tree

We've been to Tamarind Tree several times. On Wednesday night we went with Ken Thompson, a friend from Vancouver, and Ivy Chang, Vivian's chocolateering friend.

It was not a good experience. They were out of beef and out of several liqueurs, so about everything we tried to order was not in stock.

Then at the end, they packed up all the sides and didn't send home any of our main courses.

So we won't be headed back any time soon.
