MEDICINE eatstation

MEDICINE"s cuisine is called shojin and is from Zen Buddhist temples in Japan. Shojin is sometimes translated to mean "working to better oneself," or more loosely as "medicine".

We call ourselves an EATSTATION to set ourselves apart from traditional restaurants" formality. MEDICINE is a simple place to eat: most of our seating is on two-person benches at beautiful long communal tables made of sustainably harvested mahogany; for customer convenience, we include a moderate optional service charge on every check, and no further tipping is accepted. You could think of us as an ultra-modern version of an old-fashioned lunch counter.

MEDICINE NEW-SHOJIN EATSTATION was founded by six experienced restaurateurs from the U.S., Japan, and Hong Kong. We are motivated to create a new kind of restaurant that brings something of lasting value to the world. We also want to create a business that through our daily work helps us to become better people.
Tags: medicine eatstation, san francisco, events, reviews, vegan, shojin

Map this on Platial
We use organic produce and products and specially prepare them to retain their wholesomeness. Using a variety of techniques, most dishes are cooked below 48°C to preserve optimal flavor and nutrition. By not overheating food, all the energy-giving enzymes are left alive and intact, providing our body with all that we require to repair cellular damage and to create billions of healthy new cells every day. Celebrate life! Eating uncooked vegan food brings us closer to nature while cleansing our bodies of destructive toxins.

Enjoy delicious and light Saf dishes from our menu at Hayal Kahvesi in one of the largest sport complexes in Turkey - Club Sporium Akatlar. If you've worked up an appetite after working out, or if you're just relaxing by the pool, our menu offers fresh organic food and drinks that are healthy as well as tasty.

Snack on savory starters, dine on innovative entrees or indulge in guilt-free desserts in Hayal Kahvesi's chic bistro. Cool off by the pool with a fresh and functional juice, rich and tasty dairy-free milkshake or one of our organic cocktails made with fresh fruits, herbs and house-made cordials.

Saf's menu at Hayal Kahvesi Bistro is designed by world renowned raw food chef Chad Sarno and organic sommelier and mixologist Joe McCanta. Whether dining in the bistro or hanging out at the pool bar, Saf Akatlar brings you the ultimate in active living and inactive lounging.

Anyone can shop at this co-op regardless of membership. This place houses a spectacular selection of all-natural groceries, and its profits help support some wonderful charitable programs. Their seasonal produce is fantastic. The best avocados I have ever eaten were purchased from here.

It has an awesome deli buffet (with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options) and a room with tables where you can sit and eat. The olive bar is fantastic. If you're a foodie and you're anywhere near Sacto, don't miss this place!
Tags: dining, groceries, vegan, co-op, natural, vegetarian, food, cooperative, all natural

Map this on Platial
Oh, Sunflower, how I love you! This place serves all-natural vegetarian food with lots of vegan options. You walk up to the window, give your order, then sit at a picnic table to wait while chickens roam all around you. The service is kind of slow, so be prepared to wait a bit, but once they call your number.... Yum!

The nut-burgers are fantastic. They also sell absolutely fabulous vegan cookies from Sacramento's Sun Flour Baking Company (website below). Talk about heavenly!

Youngster cafe that serves vegetarian food, coffee, organic teas and juices and has a small selection of booze available.

Pastries and cakes provided by local cake shop Coco Rico, if memory serves correctly.

The decor hints at fripperies and thread-worn Victoriana (if not many of the customers, ba-doom-shhhhhhh), there's a selection of older New Yorkers available (that's choice) and some Scrabble boards.

The soundtrack changes with the whims of the employees, last week I think I heard half of a Red Krayola album followed by a collection of Prince singles, which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all.

Smoking section in the back, equipped with Distroboto. It's also where they hang the art, strangely.
Tags: coffee, vegan, vegetarian, montreal zinesters, places to play scrabble

Map this on Platial

Boba Cafe

Apparently this was once called "Tapioca Express". It might be under different ownership now.

Anyway, this place is awesome! Wonderful boba. Wonderful food. Cheap prices. Friendly, comfortable atmosphere. You really can't lose here.

I got the red bean soy milk with added red beans and large boba. Best boba drink I've ever had, hands down! It was blended smooth with ice and sweetened to perfection! The boba were chewy and sweet, just like they should be.

Also got the almond soy milk with boba... not my favorite. The artificial almond flavor didn't sit well with me.

I got some food while I was there, too. Luckily, there were plenty of vegan options for me. The sea weed salad with bean sprouts in garlic and vinegar sauce: fantastic! And the dry bean curd (slightly stinky tofu) with Chinese parsley (a.k.a. cilantro) and peanut? Ditto! This was authentic, quality Asian food, not deep fried crap catered to American tastes. I can't wait to eat there again!
Tags: vegan, vegetarian, food, asian, boba, boba drinks, tapioca pearl drinks

Map this on Platial

Babycakes Bakery

Vegan? Easily agitated stomach? Aversion to dairy? Sweet tooth? Allergic to flour? Babycakes will cater to all of your exhorbitant demands, you gentle stomached, vegetarian, vegan-friendly New Yorker. The chocolate chip cookie is one of best I've had, I didn't even notice that it lacked anything, because well, it didn't! Try it as a chocolate chip frosting sandwich ($3.75). The frosting is actaully the best part about this place; you can even buy frosting shots for a dollar. As for the yummy cupcakes ($2.50), you can kiss gross-ass too sickly-sweet Magnolia's goodbye and opt for their gluten-free lemon which is more moist than the wheat free variety. Both are great. Actually, another great thing about this place is that it's so heavily branded-- it has an old fashion 50's style bakery sign that flashes out front, and old school bar stools and counter. I like to personally sit in the window cushion, eat my cupcake and peruse the copies of Star and Teen Vogue that the bakery girls have so kindly supplied.

PS. The employee uniforms are the cutest; striped pink minidresses with white collars and puffed sleeves!
Tags: cupcakes, desserts, vegan, vegetarian, bakery, frosting, cookies, catering, retro styled, yum

Map this on Platial

Black Sheep Bakery

Today I went to one of the Black Sheep Bakery outlets http://blacksheepbakery.com/site/687531/page/474549
(Portland Farmers Market at PSU park blocks). I went early, got my coffee and promptly walked over to their booth for a carrot cupcake. Then I saw some sort of berry pastry. I don't know what it is called but I bought it (along with the carrot cupcake). This new berry pastry thing was really good. Really, really good and vegan. I guess I will have to arrive early next week to find out more.

I don't know if they sell their goods at their headquarters. It may be you have to visit one of their outlets. I know they sell muffin and mix packages online and wholesale.
Tags: vegan, wheat free, pastry, muffins, treats, cookies, brownies, berry, sheep, mystery

Map this on Platial

Planet Smoothie

This place is really great, better than Jamba Juice! The smoothies are thick and fruity, just as they should be. Last time I got a 'Thelma and Louise', which is strawberries, pineapple, and a "women's only blast". So good!
The menu has really convenient indicators next to the non-dairy items. There are brochures at the store that tell you what the nutritional contents of each drink are and what the contents of all the "Blasts" are. I don't think you can mix and match them like you can with the "Boosts" at Jamba Juice, but I personally don't mind.
Some of the drinks with special ingredients are overly pricey, but most of the menu is very reasonable.
Also, this location carries Sun Flour Baking Company vegan cookies, which was a total plus for me because those things are delicious!
Tags: healthy, fruit, vegan, smoothie, cookies

Map this on Platial

Melinda Likes Cooked Food

I try to see my friends Carolyn and Melinda whenever I'm in the Bay Area, but it seems to be working out to every four or five trips.

I've known Carolyn an impossibly long time, she's very much my sister-I-never-had. That makes Melinda the sister-in-law I never had.

This time they wanted to try Cafe Gratitude which is a raw food, vegan restaurant in Berkeley.

I had the I am Bountiful and the I am Fabulous. Both of which were very tasty.

We didn't know one key thing though, we didn't know it was a raw food restaurant. So we got our main courses and were a bit surprised. Melinda made a face that I described at the time as "A face you would recognize in a satellite photo." She was not thrilled with the raw food concept.

In fact she specifically asked our second young and monsterously sexy waitperson if the food was supposed to be cold. Much to my surprise she didn't say something like, "Yeah, uh ... duh! We're a RAW FOOD RESTAURANT!" But ... as I said ... we didn't know. Anyway Y&MSW 2 was really nice about it.

Later young and monsterously sexy waitperson three brought us nice deserts which, of course, were all raw, but there are plenty of no-bake cakes. So that was pretty tasty.

I actually quite liked my I am Fabulous. But it did feel like a salad and my brain has been trained to think of a salad as an appetizer.

So, even though Melinda wouldn't, I'd recommend Cafe Gratitude to people who fully understand that they will be getting raw vegan food.

TEAPOT VEGETARIAN HOUSE - Seattle

The Teapot is proud to present a full vegan menu. This is the second menu since we became vegetarian seven years ago. In it you will find a bigger and better selection (we hope), and a more balanced and well-rounded choice to meet every taste and need. We are still committed to offering healthy food and continually introduce innovative entrees to our menu. We strive to offer you good service in a clean, inviting and peaceful environment. We have served the Capitol Hill neighborhood for the past 15 years, and we hope to continue to do so for many more. We also have a new location in Redmond near Microsoft.

Throughout our menu you will find Pan-Asian selections from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and China. The owners and chefs, with 52 years of restaurant business experience, have researched and perfected these dishes for the last few years and have added them to the Teapot menu. All items are now completely vegan ie, free from milk and eggs and all animal products. To encourage others to try a vegetarian diet, we have retained entrees from the old Mandarin Restaurant Menu (our former incarnation) but have replaced the meat with high quality soy substitutes. We, however, will not compromise the taste of any of our dishes for any reasons except two: To promote a healthier diet and compassion for life. Eat and be truly merry.

HOURS

Daily - 11AM - 10:30PM

Sometimes featuring live entertainment
Friday and Saturday evenings from 7PM -
Tags: teapot vegetarian house seattle, seattle, events, reviews, vegan

Map this on Platial

teany cafe

        our story

One morning in December of 2001 Kelly and I were having breakfast, and somehow we ended up talking about how we both had always wanted to own a restaurant or a cafe. This was one of those ideas that we had both harbored in private, but talking about it and realizing that we shared each other's enthusiasm made us actually think seriously about finding a space and opening a little restaurant/cafe. What made the idea seem even more appealing was that we both had very similar thoughts about what this restaurant/cafe should be like. We agreed that it should be local (What's the point in owning a café if you can't hang out there?). It should be vegetarian but should appeal to everyone (as kelly is a vegetarian and I'm a vegan). It should be clean and bright and contemporary (but not contemporary in a cold and trendy way, contemporary in a clean and simple and lighthearted way). It should be relaxed and comfortable, and we should have two tea-robots as our mascots...

After a month of looking at real estate we found a wonderful space on Rivington street, in the lower east side of Manhattan, quite close to where Kelly and I each live. The space seemed perfect to us because it faced south (sunny!), was close to where we each lived, it was small, and it had a cute little outdoor space in front. So we signed the lease and then i went on tour and Kelly went to work.

It's worth noting at this point that neither Kelly nor I had any restaurant experience up until we decided to open teany. Therefore, as I went on tour, Kelly had to learn everything about opening and running a restaurant. She worked with architects and contractors, distributors and city officials, plumbers and etc etc. She worked incredibly hard, and in all honesty I have to say that the lion's share of the credit for teany has to rest with Kelly. I wish that I could take more credit for teany's aesthetic or it's food, but the truth is that Kelly pretty much did everything while I traveled around the world and played concerts and talked about myself to journalists.

teany opened in May of 2002, and for our opening we had a big party. I couldn't believe that we had actually taken teany from an idea shared over breakfast to a functioning restaurant/cafe. Okay, when I say 'we', I of course mean 'Kelly'. I signed the checks and oversaw everything, but as I said earlier, Kelly pretty much did everything.

When we first had the idea to open teany we also decided that teany should focus on tea. The reason for this is that tea is healthy, tasty, fascinating, varied, and full of history. Not to mention the fact that we both thought that a small space filled with 96 canisters of tea from around the world just seemed like a cool idea.

(And now I can editorialize a bit and say that I love teany. It's bright and pretty and the food is great and the drinks are great and it's my pride and joy and I know it's shameful for me to gush and wax enthusiastic over teany, but I really do love it.)

One of our other goals with teany is to make a vegetarian restaurant/café where even non-vegetarians are happy to hang out. I have great respect for some of the rigidly strict vegan restaurants in the world, but we wanted teany to be a place wherein everyone feels comfortable, regardless of whether they're vegetarian or vegan or carnivore or what have you.

One of my favorite things is when a non-vegetarian comes into teany and has our vegan turkey club with a champagne raspbellini followed by a piece of vegan chocolate cheesecake and says to me, 'Wow, I never knew that vegan and vegetarian food could be so GOOD!'

Thanks for your interest in teany, and we hope to see you here soon. If you need to contact us, we can be reached at (646) 602-0014, or littleidiot@teany.com. And don't forget - all of our teas, tea pots, and other teany lovelies, available online right here.

thanks!

- m
Tags: teany cafe, new york, events, reviews, vegan, moby

Map this on Platial
