Granville Island, Vancouver

The Dockside Brewing Company, in the Granville Island Hotel, features their own variety of Island brewed beers. Yummy!

Also visit the Public Market, and Art School and local artist studios.
From the outset of its redevelopment in the late 1970s, Granville Island has been a haven for the arts. All across the Island, former empty sheds have been reawakened as studios, stages, sets and scenery for art exhibits, theatrical plays, street performers, and music shows.
Tags: vancouver, island

Map this on Platial

Vancouver, BC

Like Portland, Vancouver is an extrememly "livable" city. On my one short trip there I was overwhelmed with the kindness and friendliness of the people there and the beauty of the city itself.
When crossing the border into Canada on my only trip to BC thus far the crossing guard asked where we were going to. I said, "Vancouver." He asked where we were coming from. I said, "Vancouver!" as in Vancouver, WA. I thought it was hysterical - the crossing guard not so much.
Vancouver seems at the same time so much like the U.S. and so much NOT like the U.S. It's different enough, yet familiar enough for me to want to call it Home.
Tags: bc, where would i be, vancouver, crossing guard joke, relocate.

Map this on Platial

"Main and Broadway" by Cub

"Main and Broadway" was written by Lisa Marr about an encounter with a former boyfriend and his new girlfriend. The song title refers to the intersection of Main St. and E Broadway in Vancouver.

You and her walking by
You say "hello" so civilised
Does she know you were my boy one time?

So what am I supposed to say?
"You're looking swell, have a nice day"
Good to see she's prettier than me

Things go on, I get confused
I don't know how it feels to be...
Anymore...

(Chorus)
Didn't know I missed you 'till today
'Cos I thought that love just went away
Or at least I had it licked

Rpt Chorus

Didn't know I missed you 'till today...

Love letters, broken lockets
Dead flowers, candy boxes
That's what you're left with when it's over
It's over, it's over, it's over...

Now I wonder what went wrong
Why we didn't get along
Nothing left but distance in your eyes

There you go, hand in hand
Leaving me alone to stand here, just
Another stupid chump

Fights of spite, and I could talk
In the end that's what you got
So what's the point of bothering at all?

Rpt Chorus

I was wrong...

Rpt Chorus

Didn't know I missed you 'till today...

La la la la....

St. Francis does not really specialize in rat care, but in an emergency it is a good place to go (after hours, it is much better for rats than Dove Lewis). Mr. Dr. Baker is an extremely nice and patient veterinarian. After the emergency is over, I would recommend transport over to Southwest Animal Hospital.
Tags: portland, vancouver, veterinarian, 24 hours, animal hospital, emergency, vet, rat

Map this on Platial

Chinese Midnight Snack @ Landmark Hotpot Restaurant

Said to be the first Chines hotpot restaurant in Vancouver, but whatever...Landmark is the best place to go to when you're still hungry and it's 10pm. It closes at 2am.

It's known for its Hong Kong-style hotpots, with the cooking aparatus right at your table. Every time I visit the place we order the same items and they never fail to impress my tummy: the fresh seafood congee (a fresh plate of seafood arrives and you place the seafood into the congee to be cooked); sauteed pea shoots; minced garlic & honey spareribs; spicy seasoned salt encrusted small fish; spicy seasoned salt encrusted tofu; sauteed chinese pickles with peanuts, red/green peppers; and small medallions of chicken sauteed with red peppers, garlic, onions, dried spicy chili peppers.

When you're stuffed, you'll be served a complimentary glass of "sour plum drink" to cleanse your palate.

Although there are Guu's on Robson, Guu Otokomae in Gastown has a more open atmosphere and an amazing cocktail selection...more on that later.

You'll find Guu Otokomae on the 2nd floor of its building, down Waterfront St between Steamworks and the steamclock. Guu Otokomae's menu serves homestyle Japanese "tapas" that is inexpensive, simple and tasty, such as yakionigiri (grilled riceballs), gindara (black cod with miso sauce), popeye salad (spinach, bacon, and chock full of veggies), and a poke-style marinated tuna with avocado and mango.

The tapas shouldn't cost any more than $7.20. The cocktail menu is full of interesting things such as Rose Rum (with a base of the house rum where they infuse a real rose in rum), and the Snowflake (vodka, vanilla liquor, lemon, lychee ice balls).
Tags: izakaya, tapas, cocktails, japanese food, vancouver

Map this on Platial
you wouldn't think to go to a seafood restaurant for afternoon tea, but actually it's one of the best tea services i've had. bonus points for being in stanley park (so pretty). you can walk off all those tea sandwiches and scones afterwards...but beware the black squirrels!

There is always a lineup at Casa Gelato in the summertime, whether it's Saturday or Monday night. The staff are more than happy to give out samples of the flavours that interest you...and many will interest you.

The standard vanilla, chocolate, strawberry is there...as well as unique items such as wasabi or even gorgonzola & pear. There are sorbettos and frozen yogurts, and flavours such as jackfruit, nut kalfi, lychee, green apple, rootbeer, death by mango, durian, vanilla lemon zest, and the list goes on.

A single costs about 3 bucks; a double $5.
Tags: gelato, vancouver, icecream, sorbet, frozen yogurt

Map this on Platial
This chain hotel is better than most in the Best Western family, with a helpful and friendly staff and sparkling rooms. We were upgraded to a corner room with sweeping views of the city. While the decor is typical bland hotel, the location is great for the cost - making this a great value. Only a short walk from the water, local beaches, and restaurants.
Our first morning in Vancouver we stumbled across this tiny diner a couple blocks from our hotel. It didn't look like much at first, just a row of booths, and a counter. However, the hearty breakfast fare and the hardworking and pleasant staff made us regulars for our entire stay! The large portions and low price make this diner a great value. Even my thrifty husband was impressed! The bonus was one particular waitress who ran the entire place by herself on a busy weekday morning, and still managed to remember our names. We will definately be back next time we're in town. Go early on weekend mornings when everyone in town packs the place for brunch.
Tags: dining, vancouver, restaurants, diners, templeton

Map this on Platial
Vancouver's #1 Tourist Trap. Don't let this keep you away, just temper your expectations. A couple hours is more than enough to stroll the cobblestone streets and peek into the mix of shops from tacky souvenirs to First Nations artwork. The steam clock will mesmerize youngsters - just don't let the cat out of the bag about how the clock really works (not actually by steam - sorry!). Keep in mind that shops start closing around 4pm.

This historical theatrical presentation in Gastown was fairly new when we visited Vancouver in 2006. The production takes you through the history of Vancouver, from the First Nations to the growth of a modern city, with an emphasis on the heady days of westward expansion. The audience physically follows the actors from scene to scene as time progresses, and the script is surprisingly well-written. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the interactive story-telling.Just be prepared for the cost - it was C$22 when we visited.
Tags: gastown, vancouver, theater, history, storyeum

Map this on Platial

Old Spaghetti Factory

My thrifty husband loved this boisterous Italian restaurant. He loves trains, and the Factory has a real antique trolley car in the middle of the restaurant. He insisted we wait until a table opened up inside the trolley, car, and while that took 45 minutes at this always busy spot, the wait staff were considerate and let us munch on garlic bread while we waited. Once we were seated, we devoured huge portions of spaghetti, meatballs, and bread, all for a very reasonable price. This restaurant is not for everyone, but if you have kids or are young at heart, the Spaghetti Factory is worth the wait. The food is standard Italian fare - meatballs, pastas and salads. Expect to pay $7-12 a person.
Tags: gastown, dining, vancouver, restaurants, Italian

Map this on Platial

Ditch the car and take a sea bus to this small island in the heart of Vancouver. You'll spend a pleasant afternoon browsing the traffic-free artists' community and public market. Assemble a picnic in the market and snag bench space on the water while you munch. Something's always going on here. While we were there, we danced to a salsa band by the market, browsed artisans' workshops, and stumbled across a sidewalk chalk festival dsplaying a vast array of local talent. This is one of Vancouver's best free sights.
Tags: galleries, dining, vancouver, shopping, art, markets, ganrville island

Map this on Platial

The Sandbar - Disappointing

I read a great review about this restaurant. However, I found the entire dining experience at the Sandbar fell short of expectations. My salmon burger was so dry I had to drink copious amounts of water just to swallow it. The service was slow and indifferent, even though the lunch crowd was sparse. The atmosphere was lacking something memorable. It was sterile - not cozy or hip or even eclectic. I would skip this restaurant and dine instead at the nearby Granville Public Market for much less money and much more atmosphere.
Tags: dining, vancouver, restaurants, granville island, the sandbar

Map this on Platial
Seals, dolphins, and giant fish - enough to keep kids of all ages occupied for hours! Just be sure to AVOID WEEKENDS, which we were not smart enough to do. The place was crowded with strollers and running, screaming children. Exactly the clientele that should be there, but for two honeymooners, we would have been wise to avoid Saturday. The exhibits are interesting and well laid-out. Try to catch a dolphin show with the trainers. We especially enjoyed the beluga whales.
Tags: vancouver, kids, aquarium, stanley park

Map this on Platial

Totem Poles

We stumbled across this cluster of totem poles in Vancouver's Stanley Park and stood mesmerized. The craftsmanship is amazing. There are also some displays about the local Coast Salish First Nations. One of the totems was carved by Haida artist Bill Reid, well-known in these parts for his artistry and role in keeping the craft of carving totems alive. For anyone interested in Vancouver's native heritage, this is a great way to get up close to some towering totems.
Tags: vancouver, crafts, art, stanley park, native americans, first nations, totem poles, first peoples

Map this on Platial

Stanley Park - Urban Oasis!

The absolute highlight of Vancouver! We spent an entire day here, walking the seawall promenande from the north side of the city and around to the crowded beaches on the south side. Sane people should elect to use the park's bus system or rent some bikes to get around, but if you have all day to linger, walking isn't too bad. Just make sure you have a picnic packed, as there is no way up to the restaurants on Prospect Point from the promenade. (We ended up surviving on a lunch of granola bars...and if you're diabetic or hypoglycemic like we are, this is a very foolish strategy...in our defense the map can be misleading!) Along the way we saw totem poles, a cannon used as a clock, locals enjoying a cricket match, the Vancouver Aquarium, lighthouses, beautiful vistas, exotic boats (one looked like it was an old Chinese trading ship from the 1800s), and locals fishing. Pack your swimming suit and towel to join the locals at the crowded beaches at the end of your walk. This park offers something for everyone.
Tags: vancouver, biking, beaches, sports, parks, outdoors, stanley park

Map this on Platial

Vancouver, BC - City with a Heart

I fell in love with this quintessential Pacific Northwest city. Vancouver is surrounded by beautiful outdoor retreats and extremely conscious of its place within the local environment. Life revolves around the water - hop a water bus to Granville Island or sample some of the day's seafood catch. The people are friendly, passionate about food and art, and open to people of various backgrounds. They also love to celebrate and enjoy life. While we were here on our honeymoon, we stumbled across a huge gay pride parade, an international fireworks festival, packed beaches, and a vibrant Indian street market. This is a city of festivals and mingling cultures, so be prepared to meet the local people, expand your horizons, and sample some of the local cusine and coffee while you're at it!
Tags: vancouver, outdoors, festivals, pacific northwest, british columbia

Map this on Platial
A great location to rest after a few hours of walking the Stanley Park seawall promenade. Here we took enough photos to fill a couple photo albums, the views were that breathtaking! Break out a picnic lunch and inhale the sea air (while indulging your husband in yet another photo!)
Tags: vancouver, stanley park, lighthouses, prospect point, scenic lookouts

Map this on Platial
The Old Slocum House Theater is Vancouver's oldest Non-Profit Community Theater. We will be celebrating 40 years in 2005. Hermine Decker, the founder of the company, and Robert Hidden adopted the old house before it was to be torn down, and had it brought up from the river to its current home in 1966.

A group of hardworking friends of the house remodeled, cleaned and with great resourcefulness, created a wonderful new home for local theater. On a hot, sunny summer day, it seems every local discovers this one beach. It is CROWDED and the place to see and be seen in an otherwise unpretentious city. Expect to fight over space to lay out a blanket in the summer. There's a great playground slide for the kids. A short walk away find Denman Street and hot dog stands.
Tags: vancouver, beaches, swimming, english bay beach

Map this on Platial
When you need to get a pair of Onitsuka Tigers in Vancouver, go to El Kartel a unique shop on Robson St. The ambience is fresh, modern, and feels like an art gallery. DJ spins music from a turntable built overlooking the store.

Very laidback staff onhand to help select unique items from their women's or men's clothing selection. The style is more streetwear and accessories such as sneakers, hats from labels such as Stüssy, Lacoste, Punk Royal, Le Coq Sportif, Gravis, Kid Robot, and Onitsuka Tigers (Asics).

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

We spent all afternoon at the annual gay pride parade, so by the time we got to Chinatown, most sites were closed, including this classical Chinese garden. Like furtive little children, we peaked through the gate and got a glimpse of a lush and balanced world. Definately check this garden out, just pay better attention to the time than we did!
Tags: vancouver, gardens, chinatown, chinese garden

Map this on Platial
This is the most family friendly of the beaches, with a huge oceanside freshwater pool, and a less-crowded atmosphere than English Bay Beach. Amazing views of the sunset. I prefer this beach or Third Beach to laze the day away over hyper English Bay Beach.
Tags: vancouver, beaches, swimming, stanley park, second beach

Map this on Platial

Scenic Coal Harbour Seawalk

A lovely place to linger and stroll arm-in-arm with your sweetheart. This seawalk links Stanley Park with Canada Place, and boasts breath-taking views of the hills and mountains of North Vancouver, and passes some quiet little harbors. Best in the early morning when the sun is cool and the city is just waking up. Bring coffee and some bagels for breakfast. And best of all, it's free!
Tags: vancouver, walking, seawalks, coal harbor

Map this on Platial

Museum of Anthropology

As an anthropology minor in college and someone of native descent, I am endlessly FASCINATED by this museum. Tucked into a quiet corner of the UBC campus, the museum has a jam-packed array of bentwood boxes, totem poles, argillite sculptures and masks. Be forewarned that the items on display are not well labelled for the novice viewer, so plan to take one of the excellent and free guided tours. While I aimlessly wandered, my husband soaked up the information and learned a lot more than I did. There's also a section that's a working archive, where you can peruse the storage cases of thousands of objects, using the reference catalogs to find descriptions of what you're seeing. Be sure to wander outside to the longhouse and lonely totem poles overlooking English Bay. The highlight of the museum for me was the gorgeous "Raven and the First Men", carved by Haida artists Bill Reid. Placed in its own atrium and bathed in sunlight, truly a jaw-dropping and mystical experience.
You can reach the museum by public transportation, just be sure to verify with the bus driver where to get off for the UBC campus. It's a pleasant 10 minute walk through campus to the museum, including a quick stroll through a rose garden.
Tags: vancouver, ubc, museums, anthropology, native americans, first nations, first peoples, museum of anthropology

Map this on Platial

Third Beach - Sunseek with the Locals

On a hot, sunny summer day, the locals hit the beach. This beach is the least crowded, great for a relaxing afternoon. Lean against the driftwood with a good book and a tube of sunscreen, lay out a picnic lunch, or wade in the cool waters. This is a great way to experience everyday life in the city. While there are no lifeguards here, the waters are generally pretty calm, just keep an eye on your kids.
Tags: vancouver, beaches, swimming, stanley park

Map this on Platial

Sunset Beach

Of all the city beaches in Vancouver, this is my favorite. We strolled the beach in the late evening to catch the gorgeous dance of the sunset across the bay. We also happened across an international fireworks festival and joined with hundreds of locals to watch the show. I fell in love with Vancouver that night, as the water buses performed a ballet on the bay, and the moon rose over the crowds gasping at the lights display, the city lights behind us.
Tags: fireworks, vancouver, beaches, sunset beach

Map this on Platial

Stepho's - worth the wait!

We waited a LONG time to get into this restaurant, the line literally strecthing far down the block. We questioned the wisdom of waiting 45 minutes for a seat (they don't take reservations). Then we finally had a bite of the scumptious Greek food at this family-run restaurant. Flavorful, intense, and so worth the stabbing hunger pains! So either arrive early, or bring a truckload of patience. Also, ask to be seated inside. We were seated on the skinny patio, which at first seemed atmospheric, until we realized all the staff on break were smoking nearby. For someone from a country where smoking in public places is increasingly being outlawed, an unpleasant experience. Expect to pay $15-20 a person.
Tags: dining, vancouver, greek, restaurants

Map this on Platial

Canada Place - Overrated

While a gorgeous place to stroll and take photos of the mountains across the inlet on a sunny day, this giant entertainment, convention, and business complex is really a glorified pier full of docking cruise ships. Spend no more than half an hour here people-watching, and pop into the excellent TI. Unless you're catching a film at the I-MAX theater, move on to more authentic parts of the city. This is Vancouver's #1 tourist trap.
Tags: piers, vancouver, scenery, Canada Place, imax theater

Map this on Platial

Authentic Chinatown

A living, breathing Chinatown in the heart of Vancouver. As an authentic neighborhood, this Chinatown is grittier than many Chinatowns in the West that have become more tourist-oriented. As a result, it's a great place to experience a glimpse into daily life. Check out the markets, especially the colorful night market, stroll the gardens, and peek into historic areas like Shanghai Alley. Be forewarned, the crime and drug-ridden neighborhood of Downtown Eastside is only a couple blocks away, so stay alert. If you stumble into this area, walk with purpose back into Chinatown. Better yet, set up a self-guided walking tour plan ahead of time that avoids this section and stick to it.
Tags: vancouver, chinatown

Map this on Platial
