Trees to climb and my brother Guy

I lived in Susanville, when I was in 1st through 4th grade, I loved my brother Guy who was a toddler at the time. I climbed the oak tree next to my house and would sit at the top and listen to the world go by for hours. I loved to run away from home and hang out at the cemetary, it was quiet and pretty and I felt somehow comforted there.
Tags: trees, old houses, big porches, brothers, tom boy, school, crab apples, cemetaries

Map this on Platial

This park contains a playground, soccer fields, frisbee golf facilities, two horse arenas, and (best of all, in my opinion) a small but relatively intact example of riparian oak forest. The woods are a great place to go for a walk.

The park is also the site of Orangevale's annual Spring carnival, "Pow Wow Days".
Tags: soccer, nature, trees, horse, playground, frisbee golf, equestrian, oaks

Map this on Platial
This world-famous scenic drive is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101, which parallels Freeway 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the entire 500 mile redwood belt and is accessible to all with convenient services provided along the way. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft or bike ride in the cool hush of these ancient redwood forests.
Tags: drive, scenic, nature, trees, redwoods, giants, Avenue of the Giants, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Highway 101

Map this on Platial

Daycare Park

Three different daycares congregate here every single weekday morning. It's a great place to hang out with your kid. Local people bring their old toys here and drop them off, so it is full of old plastic wagons, scooters, toy gas pumps, playhouses, annd one very large sdandbox tugboat.

The park was also renovated this year.

One of the coolest things about this park is that the flowering trees attract honey bees from a local hive. They're gentle honey bees. I've never seen a kid gett stung, thought they run through the water puddle where the bees congregate to drink.

Excellent climbing trees!

Peeling paper from trees

The kids will spend at least 20 minutes peeling every shred of loose papery bark from these birch trees every time we come here. It's great, except that the trees are surrounded by little gardens of clumsy large-ish stones, that kids just seem to constantly stumble over, so instead of being able to enjoy those rare moments when the kids are absorbed in something, it becomes a constant game of 'pick me up, i fell on these rocks'. Oh yeah, they also just constantly want to keep all the little 'paper' scraps in MY pockets. Great.
Tags: offspring, park, jamison square, pearl, fun, trees, birch tree, paper bark, peeling bark, st pattys day

Map this on Platial

1,031 Trees in Cass Lake, Minnesota (planted in 1997)

In Cass Lake, a reservation town in Northern Minnesota, 1,031 seedlings were planted representing approximately one tree per resident. The planting itself took place over a one-week period in late May 1997. Residents themselves determined where the trees were sited -- on their own property as well as on public land -- and were actively involved in the planting as well. In conjunction with the 1997 show "Joseph Beuys Multiples" at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Project was coordinated by independent curator Todd Bockley with support from the Visual Arts Department, as well as the Education Department's Teen Programs and Community Programs.

Cedar Street Park, aka Reverand Thomas J. Williams Park

This is a really well-designed park. The little kids' area is fenced and only has one exit, which has a nice table strategically situated right in front of it, where you can sit and work and stand guard at the same time. The larger park also has only one exit to watch, really. There is a back exit, but it's far away from the playground equipment and not very appealing to the kids. There's a good climbing structure, and water play in the summer. There are almost always kids here, even very early in the morning.

Another great thing about this park is that dogs are allowed and tolerated off leash when the park isn't crowded. There are poop-pick-up bags in the park and an area where you can throw a ball or stick.

Great park, great internet connection.

My Favorite Playground EVER

[April 18, 2005] I'm an odd tourist. I go and see the sights, do the touristy stuff, some days. See the historic sights, and the Gorgeousness Of Nature, and all that. And then on other days I wander around and take pictures of all the graffiti I find, or of pretty trees I want to climb, or street signs that interest me, and every so often I check to see if the sky is doing something interesting when it thinks I'm not paying attention. So I think of myself as more of an explorer than a tourist. I like to wander around in cemetaries (because I'm a secretly a little goth girl), and I like to visit playgrounds (because I'm only this many: *holds up three fingers*).

There's this park I always see from the bus. It's got a playground right next to the wall of a cliff, which reminds me intensely of a park from my half-remembered year in Norway at age 6. So today I decided I'd get off the bus and explore it first, before I continued on to temples and shrines.

And it's the COOLEST PARK EVER. Not only is it a park with at "Danger, Falling Rocks" sign next to the playground (that's EXTREME! eXtreme Playgrounds!), it's also got this huge banyan tree up the hill from it.

The treehouse in Swiss Family Robinson was a banyan tree. They're from India, and they have grey bark that looks kind of like cement, and they drop aerial roots from their branches which eventually sink into the ground and become additional roots. So there's parts you can climb, and parts you can hide inside, and 'vines' that are strong enough that you can swing on them, and this tree has them all!

There's another one that's attached to a cliff face, and its roots stretch all the way down the cliff for something like 60 feet.

You can climb straight up the roots. I know, because I tried it did.
Tags: playgrounds, fun, trees, tree climbing, banyan, climbing trees

Map this on Platial

The TreeDome

Konstantin Kirsch builds living spaces out of trees. From the website:

"Trees are incredible living beings. With their roots deep in the earth, branches high in the sky, and with leaves straight to the sunlight, they stand there for decades and centuries on the same location. They are real living estates. (In German its called "Immobilien" it means not mobile) Can we learn from trees how to build houses? Can we grow houses out of trees? Yes, or better probably, because the mainstream habits are difficult to satisfy in living rooms. We must adapt a bit to the trees if we want to live with, on or in them.
Tags: treehouse, trees, unique, unusual, beautiful, interesting, ecological

Map this on Platial
