Berry Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Ballardvale T station.

Berry Pond is the area's day use facility, and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pond has a sand beach and new washhouse with flush toilets and changing stalls set against a beautiful backdrop of trees reflected in the surface of the pond. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Grills and picnic tables are available for anyone wishing to picnic at Berry Pond.

Lorraine Park Campground, located about 2 miles from the Headquarters on Jenkins Rd., contains 91 sizeable campsites that are spread out sufficiently to provide a real "forest" camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, and although no electric or water hookups are available, the bathrooms do have hot water showers. Camping is offered mid-April to mid-October; office hours are from 9am-9pm.
Tags: swimming, water, swim, swimming hole, picinic, state forest, hiking, fishing, trails, showers, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, trailer, accessible beaches, accessible camping, accessible restrooms, hunting restrictions, picnicking, skiing crosscountry, r.v., walking trails, camping

Map this on Platial

Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary

This urban sanctuary, located on the grounds of the former Boston State Hospital, offers public programs year-round. Through its Boston Schools Initiative, the Boston Nature Center provides environmental education programs to Boston elementary schools weekly. Two miles of wheelchair accessible trails and boardwalks traverse meadows and wetlands where wildlife abounds, including coyotes, pheasants, and many species of migratory birds. The sanctuary’s George Robert White Environmental Conservation Center is one of the “greenest” buildings in Boston, teaching environmentally sustainable design by example. The site also includes the Clark-Cooper Community Gardens, Boston’s oldest and largest, providing food and a green oasis for 260 local families.
Tags: boston nature center and wildlife sanctuary, mattapan, events, reviews, trails

Map this on Platial

Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary

Moose Hill is Mass Audubon’s oldest sanctuary and one of the largest with nearly 2,000 acres. The 25-mile trail system brings you through diverse habitats— explore the red maple swamp via the boardwalk, observe amphibians at a vernal pool, or watch swallows catching insects in the meadows. Each season brings another opportunity to explore nature’s wonders—enjoy a winter stroll, watch migrating warblers, or experience the beauty of the fall foliage. Our bird-feeding station and butterfly garden bring wildlife close to the nature center. Art exhibits are shown September through June, and the gift shop is open year-round.
Tags: moose hill wildlife sanctuary, sharon, events, reviews, trails

Map this on Platial

Walden Pond State Reservation

Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847. His experience at Walden provided the material for the book Walden, which is credited with helping to inspire awareness and respect for the natural environment. Because of Thoreau's legacy, Walden Pond has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is considered the birthplace of the conservation movement. Park Interpreters provide tours and ongoing educational programs. The Reservation encompasses 400 acres which includes the 102-foot deep glacial kettle-hole pond. Mostly undeveloped woods totaling 2680 acres, called "Walden Woods" surround the reservation.
Tags: walden pond state reservation, concord, events, reviews, trails, walden, thoreau

Map this on Platial

Eaton Canyon Natural Area

Eaton Canyon lies nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, very close to Los Angeles and Pasadena. There are bicycle and foot trails, as well as a nature center that coordinates outdoor planned activities. I love the dioramas in the nature center.

There's a beautiful waterfall that feeds a stream that winds its way through the park. Lot's of folks take their very happy dogs there and you'll see a lot of families out enjoying the more moderate trails.

Elk City Lake

The undulating grasslands and timbered valleys of the Osage Cuestas make Elk City Lake one of the most exquisite spots in Kansas. The many trails, including the nationally recognized Elk River Hiking Trail, provide spectacular vistas of the lake and wind through some of the most appealing rock formations in the state. November through March are great months to see thousands of snow geese and their greater white-fronted and Canada cousins grazing the wheat fields near the wildlife refuge. Winter woodland birds include kinglets, brown creepers, tufted titmice, white-breasted nuthatches, and Carolina chickadees. Bald eagles, common and popular winter residents, can be best viewed in the standing timber of the backwaters of the upper reaches of the lake, particularly near Card Creek campground. Look for wood ducks there also. During spring and summer watch for woodpeckers, blue jays, and flycatchers. Neotropical birds, such as indigo and painted buntings, summer tanagers, northern parula, and prothonotary warblers, nest in this area. Ducks and large flocks of American white pelicans migrate through here. The woods are inhabited by pileated woodpeckers and red-tailed hawks year-round. Gray treefrogs, collared lizards, five-lined skinks, and ringneck snakes are active in spring and summer. Deer, squirrels, rabbits, wild turkeys, gray foxes, beavers, and raccoons are sometimes seen in the early morning and evening hours.

Camping icon 95 Utility campsites, Primitive camping also.

Elk River Hiking Trail (15 miles one-way); Table Mound Hiking Trail (2.75 miles one-way); Green Thumb Nature Trail (1 mile round-trip); Post Oak Nature Trail (0.66 mile round-trip); Timber Ridge Hiking Trail (2.33 miles round-trip); Squaw Creek Multi-Use Trail (1 mile one-way).
Tags: fishing, camping, wildlife, trails, Hiking, Sking, Sailing, Mountian biking, jetboats, Pittsburg, Parsons, Cherryvale, Independence, Elk City lake

Map this on Platial
Go up the steep, steep hill of Park street and you will be rewarded by access to miles, and miles, and miles of trails. Follow this trail and veer to the left when you get into the woods and you might just find a beautiful water fall. Go to the right, up the hill, and you will connect with trails that could take you to the summit of Mt. Ashland, or down the other side to Reeder reservoir. Get away from automobile traffic and experience the beautiful, natural environment! The Anacostia Tributary Trail System, a link in the national shore-to-shore American Discovery Trail, provides miles of uninterrupted trails along the tributaries of the Anacostia River. The southernmost point of the trail is located at Colmar Manor Community Park, and trail spurs extend northeasterly and northwesterly from there along beautiful stream valley parkland. The trail system's continuous greenway traverses a variety of natural environments including woodlands, open fields, and wetlands.

The trail affords ample opportunities for fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, jogging, horseback riding, and in-line skating. Sites along the Anacostia Tributary Trail System worth a stop include College Park Airport, College Park Aviation Museum, Ellen Linson Swimming Pool, Herbert Wells Ice Rink, Lake Artemesia, Adelphi Mill, College Park Community Center, Paint Branch Golf Course, the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, and many local neighborhood and community parks. The flat, barrier-free trail system is designed for a wide variety of users, and a signage system with mile markers assists with location awareness. The trail system links several neighborhoods to Metro stations, but commuters needing to travel at speeds greater than 12 miles per hour should consider alternative routes.

     Proposed Bike Trail

The Anacostia Watershed Society has been working to increase recreational access for the public to the Anacostia River, as a way to draw attention to this under-appreciated resource. We have been working to help create a bicycle link from Bladensburg, where the 21-mile Anacostia Headwaters Bicycle Trail ends, down into DC to the national Mall and downtown, as a way for local citizens to gain recreational access to the extensive trail network that currently exists, and as an effective bicycle commuter route. This is an excellent opportunity to create linkages between DC and MD, and with the newly formed Anacostia Trails Heritage Area.

The District of Columbia is actively planning their portion of the trail, but only up to the border with Maryland at the New York Ave./ Rte., 50 bridge. The crucial link that is needed to connect the DC portion of the trail with the existing Maryland trails is a 7,000 foot linear segment from the Bladensburg Waterfront Park to the DC border. We estimate that this segment will cost $40 per linear foot, bringing that to $280,000 for the trail. Two bridges will be needed to cross over two existing streams, and they will cost $120,000. To cover the costs of the design work for the trail and the bridges, we estimate we will need $40,000, bringing the total for the entire project to $400,000.

We have been working closely with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission on this project, since they are the majority land owners. They are fully supportive of this trail, but have let it be known that they are not in the position to assume another project at this time due to their already full work load. They have indicated their support for having the Anacostia Watershed Society manage this project, and have offered the services of one of their key planners to help with the engineering details for this trail. For more information, please contact Jim Connolly. (This was funded.)
Tags: dc, bike, trails, anacostia, aws

Map this on Platial

Our stay in Missouri, was seasoned with lots of time outdoors. Camping, canoing, picnicing, and hiking were some of the diversions our family would enjoy. Maramec Spring was one of our favorite spots for cookouts and meandering. It was close enough that we wouldn't have to spend the whole day getting there. It is the site of an old Iron Works from the early 1800's, and a trout hatchery that still is in operation. On our way home from visiting friends in Chicago in July of 2008, we stopped at Maramec so I could share it with my wife. It is just as I remember it from 40 years ago. The unique blue shade of the water is still as magical and mysterious as when I was 8 years old.
Tags: picnic, history, parks, trails, trout, foundry, historical sites, cookout, iron works, trout hatchery

Map this on Platial
On Belmont Hill, just 6 miles northwest of downtown Boston, lies Habitat, an 87-acre urban oasis that has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. Over 2.5 miles of gentle trails wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around 2 ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool. The visitor center is a brick Georgian-style mansion where monthly art exhibits can be viewed. Outside, there’s a pleasing and calming formal garden. The building and gardens can be reserved on weekends for weddings and other events.
Tags: habitat education center and wildlife sanctuary, belmont, events, reviews, weddings, trails

Map this on Platial
Designed to preserve the delicate balance of the natural habitat, a major portion of the park's 3,200 acres is open for use on a limited basis.
