Publick Playhouse, Cheverly

        Publick Playhouse
5445 Landover Road
Cheverly, MD 20784
301-277-1710 (Box Office)

The Publick Playhouse is committed to making the arts a vital element of the community. Cultural diversity is a hallmark of the theater that attracts audiences from throughout the greater Washington metropolitan area for music and modern dance, musical theater, historic drama, and monthly Saturday Morning at the Movies - Vaudeville Style. The Playhouse presents national and international touring acts and professional touring children's theatre to introduce school groups to the performing arts. In recent years, several prominent international tours have made the Publick Playhouse their only mid-Atlantic performance stop. The theatre is also a popular venue for area performing arts groups and is available as a rental facility to community organizations. Known to be one of the area's most inviting and best acoustical performance spaces, the Publick Playhouse is conveniently located less than half a mile off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and just 10 minutes from Capitol Hill.

The Playhouse opened as the Cheverly Theatre in 1947. Designed as an environmental movie theatre with ornate sky scenes on the ceiling and a plush art deco interior, the Cheverly was a popular attraction throughout the 1950s and 1960s. A group of supporters joined the M-NCPPC in 1975 to purchase and renovate the old theatre, and the Publick Playhouse reopened as a performing arts hall exactly 30 years after the gala opening of the Cheverly Theatre. Programming is designed to appeal to all ages, and ticket prices are purposely moderate to encourage everyone's attendance. Box office hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am-5 pm, and two hours before each performance. Call 301-277-1710, TTY 301-277-0312. The Playhouse is accessible to individuals with mobility impairments. Sign interpreted and audio described performances are available with two weeks prior notice; infrared enhanced listening devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free car and bus parking is located on well-lighted lots to the rear and east of the Playhouse. For more information about the Playhouse and its programs, contact staff Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm or during box office hours.

Read about our current programs and get directions to the Publick Playhouse below.

The Prince George's Publick Playhouse for the Performing Arts
Located at the intersection of Landover and Annapolis Roads (Routes 202 and 450), the Playhouse offers varied programs. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter the theatre during an event. Call for a complete listing of community arts programs and to confirm programming.
Tags: theatre, mncppc, cheverly, government, cultural

Map this on Platial

Uptown Stage and Screen

        The Uptown Stage
The Stage was constructed in March 1993 by removing seats from what was once the balcony seating and building a stage. Calgary was without a venue of this size for many years until the Stage was built. It was operated as a "road house" -- meaning we don't produce work, but rent to others. The venue has since had projection equipment installed and functions primarily as a film house. There are 354 seats, with a very steep "rake" (slope) to the back, with no posts nor internal blocks to visibility. The acoustics are very good, and though there are no objective measurements of acoustics, we have been pleased with the comments of performers.

The Uptown Screen
Formerly the main floor of the original movie theatre, this space was turned into an individual cinema in the mid-seventies after the balcony was walled off to form a separate cinema. 125 seats of the original 600 were removed to build a projection room. It is a lovely old theatre with many of the original touches still intact such as the great plaster torches with their stylized flames licking toward the ceiling, drawing the eye to the screen. The curtain is a magnificent brocade affair which looks gold under the lights and parts before each film with a subtle swoosh. The capacity is now 474 and it is used almost exclusively for film. The format is, as it is in the Stage, "First Run" with a bend to "art/international" film.
Tags: art film, foreign film, movies, theatre, stage, art deco

Map this on Platial
The after-work, pre-theater crowd has flocked to this 12-table Playhouse Square hideaway since it opened in January 2004. Jockey for space at the mahogany bar while sipping a silky Coffee Lover's martini made with Stoli and Kahlua, or a take-no-prisoners Bombay Sapphire gin martini. Food is limited to complimentary hors d'oeuvres (request the owner's recipe crab salad on Triscuits).

The Barclay is a marvelous local theater that brings a wide variety of entertainers and performers to Orange County. Home to the UC Irvine's drama department and to Ballet Pacifica, many nationally recognized comedians also make tours stops at the Barclay. Chamber music and opera are regular calendar offerings, as the facility's intimate size and good acoustics make every audience member feel close to the action.

I went to a play tonight. I didn't get nearly as covered in paint as I expected to. (written March 20, 2005)

It wasn't really a play, more of an improvisation theatrical performance set to music on the top floor of a parking garage in Waikiki. The actors were all wearing white underwear, and had cans or bowls of Crayola tempera paint. The performance involved them painting each other, themselves, and the audience who were sitting in the front.

We were sitting in front, and we chose to forgo the big sheets of plastic that you were supposed to use to protect our clothes. Because we're fun like that.

Here's what the stage looked like before:

And here's the curtain call:

"You marvel at the magnificent carved doors leading to the lobby. As you enter, the dramatic 12th century Spanish palace is revealed. A delicate balcony looks over the crowd and on to a rich-toned tapestry overhead. Yet, it's the full-bodied lions ringing the ceiling in the auditorium that demand your attention. Mythical figures from Spanish folklore surround as you move down the aisle. An ornate sun with twinkling stars softly illuminates your seat from above in the elaborate cathedral that is the Orpheum Theatre. Built in 1926 as a showcase for theatre magnate Alexander Pantages, the Orpheum has featured vaudeville, silent films, motion pictures, musical comedy and other theatrical entertainment. Two major renovations have dressed up the theatre and allowed easy accommodation of large-scale Broadway productions. The Orpheum has since been named a San Francisco Historical Landmark. Its mission is to explore the connections between four thousand years of Jewish heritage and the vitality of American democratic ideals.
Boston University Theatre

Designed and constructed as America's first civic playhouse, the building today known as the Boston University Theatre was the first tax-exempt theatre established in the nation. Construction having begun in 1923, it was formally opened with Sheridan's The Rivals on November 10‚ 1925. The architect was J. Williams Beal Sons.

Originally named the Repertory Theatre of Boston‚ the theatre was built to be a permanent home for the Henry Jewett Players‚ a Boston–based repertory theatre company. In choosing to locate the theatre across from Symphony Hall and near the Museum of Fine Arts and the old Boston Opera House‚ the theatre’s creators intended to signify its character as a major cultural institution of Boston and its difference from the commercial playhouses in the Boylston‚ Washington‚ Tremont streets area of the city.

Henry Jewett, a native of Australia, whose portrait as Macbeth hangs today in the main stairwell leading to the theatre's balcony, was a distinguished actor and director. Born in 1862, he moved to the United States around the turn of the century and became the leading man for Julia Marlowe. He settled in Boston shortly after 1900 and organized the Henry Jewett Players. The Jewett Company first offered Shakespeare productions at the Boston Opera House; in 1916 it moved to the Copley Theatre where it performed until the early 1920s. But Jewett's ambition was to have a permanent home for his company, and he and his wife Frances vigorously pressed for a facility built by the community. In 1923, the Jewett Repertory Fund was started; many prominent Bostonians, including Calvin Coolidge and A. Lawrence Lowell, president of Harvard University, were on the roster of sponsors.

Almost immediately from its opening‚ the Repertory Theatre was beset by difficulties. There was much theatrical competition‚ and soon an even more serious problem was posed by the advent of talking movies‚ which lured audiences from all types of live entertainment. In 1930‚ Mr. Jewett’s company disbanded. Jewett himself died in the same year.

As the theatre was being closed‚ Jewett’s widow remarked prophetically: "You can’t have a repertory theatre without subsidy — lots of subsidy." The prescience of this view was proven thirty years later in the 1960s as the American regional theatre movement became increasingly significant and revived the pattern of resident theatre companies.

During the 1930s and 1940s‚ the theatre was known as the Esquire Theatre and was mainly used as a movie house. The Esquire specialized in art films‚ and it was here that Boston audiences first saw Laurence Olivier’s Henry V. During these same years‚ the theatre occasionally reverted to its original purpose‚ as in 1941 when Louis Calhern and Dorothy Gish played in Life with Father.

In October 1953, Boston University purchased the facility, and the vision which had initially created the theatre again began to be realized. The School of Theatre Arts at the Boston University College of Fine Arts has now used the theatre as its primary facility for performance, design, and technical production for three decades. The Theatre Arts Program presented its first production, Nicholas Evreinoff's The Chief Thing‚ in December‚ 1954. Its students and faculty annually present approximately seven productions in the theatre’s main auditorium and in the upstairs space‚ now called Studio 210‚ which was originally the Repertory Theatre’s ballr
Tags: boston university theatre, boston, events, reviews, theater, theatre, event

Map this on Platial

Orpheum Theatre

When you visit, you'll know why."

Tags: orpheum theatre, san francisco, events, reviews, stage, music, musicals, theatre, performing arts

Map this on Platial

Lynn Memorial Auditorium

Opened in 1948, the City of Lynn’s Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium was built as a state of the art entertainment facility. The venue has hosted acts such as The Beach Boys, Billy Preston, Delaney & Bonnie, Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, Victor Borge, The Coasters, The Drifters, Frank Sinatra Jr, the New Kids on the Block, Jay Leno and the Boston Ballet.

Unfortunately in the mid to late 1970’s the venue saw less and less use and was eventually only used for sporadic graduations and dance recitals. However, in 2002 under the leadership of Mayor Edward Clancy, the groundbreaking of the rehabilitation of this grand venue began. In three short years, the auditorium was totally refurbished and renovated. From state of the art lighting and sound systems, to new curtains, seats, rigging, loading docks and lifts, the auditorium has jumped back onto the scene as the oldest yet newest premier entertainment venue on the North Shore of Massachusetts.

Kicking off the restoration, Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops played a blue ribbon cutting performance on October 1, 2006. This event was followed by performances by Peter Paul & Mary, Jeff Cowrin of Animal Planet and many others. City leaders are hopeful to be on par with other Boston based venues within a few years as the Lynn Auditorium gains more and more momentum. Check our events listings often as we will be adding more shows every mo
Tags: lynn memorial auditorium, lynn, events, reviews, theater, theatre, programs, acts

Map this on Platial

Center Stage

Center/Stage is the home of the Evergreen Chorale. Originally built in 1924 as a meeting house for the Episcopal Evergreen Conference Center, it is now a 160 seat theater that is used by a variety of cultural organizations. The Chorale acquired the facility from the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado in 1990.

Since acquiring the facility, the Chorale has begun the process of building improvement and renovation. Many of the projects have already been completed, including the main lobby, bathrooms, green room, and auditorium seating. Since the completion of the Lobby expansion and the addition of the Evergreen Rotary Gallery, Center/Stage is truly now where a culmination of Arts come alive! The Chorale's desire is that Center/Stage be a place used by many performing arts organizations, in addition to the Evergreen Chorale. Center/Stage is also the performing home of the Evergreen Players and the Evergreen Children's Chorale.
Tags: center stage, evergreen, events, reviews, musicals, theatre, performing arts

Map this on Platial
