4 years at a place can make you have more memories than will fit in a little text box. UPS...I will fondly remember you for these reasons:
~The ghosts that haunt the chapel, Jones, and the house I lived in Junior year
~The hippies who carry their Nalgene bottles and beat drums to stop the war
~The Hawaiians and their collective hatred of doing school work
~The security officers...if you can't beat them, join them.
~Midnight breakfast riots
~Maroon 5 concert
~Tess, Kali, Melodie, and Rob
Tags: tacoma, university of puget sound, ups

Map this on Platial

It's Greek To Me

Buildings that are on triangular parcels of land have always fascinated me. When I moved to Tacoma, I always saw this place and finally, after weeks of driving by it, I stopped. I had myself the Large Special - 1 lamb gyro, large fries, large soda. Nothing special are far as a menu goes but the lamb in the gyro was by far the best I have ever had. I have searched for years to find something as good since leaving Tacoma. Now I wish I had a photo of it because the building is so classic. If anyone finds one, please attach it.
Tags: best food, greek, resaurant, tacoma

Map this on Platial

Camp 6 Logging Museum

Our mission is to preserve and present to the public a portion of Washington State's history from the 1880's through the 1940's as it pertains to the "Steam Era of Logging". With photographs, paintings, artifacts and equipment displays, Camp 6 takes the visitor back in time from when horse and ox teams hauled out the timber up through the last days that steam powered "Donkeys" and Railroads worked the woods. Visitors will see first hand what life in the logging camps and woods of Western Washington was like.
The Museum is located on a 14 acre forested site inside a city park and was set up by logging engineers in 1964 to look and feel like a logging operation with an operating railroad connecting the working sites ("sides" or "shows") with the bunk houses and bunk cars of the camp. As a National Registered Historic Place, Camp 6 with its historic buildings, over 500 tons of "Fire Breathin' Steam Spewin' Iron Beasts" and railroad equipment is a place for all to visit.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, camp 6 logging museum

Map this on Platial

Children's Museum of Tacoma

The Children's Museum of Tacoma was established in 1985 by parents, teachers and community leaders dedicated to creating unique resources for families in Tacoma and the South Puget Sound Region. CMT opened in 1986 as a non-profit organization in the heart of downtown Tacoma. The museum remained in its original location for 10 years; rotating single theme exhibits roughly every 18 months.

Due to the excellence in education, programming and hands-on exhibits, the Museum earned a reputation as a cultural cornerstone. As a result, the Museum's physical location and size could no longer accommodate the community's demand for its services. The Museum's Board of Directors voted to relocate to the Theater District, inhabiting the historic Kress Building.

In February 1997, the Museum opened the "new" Children's Museum of Tacoma. Since that time, the Museum has featured both single and multiple-theme exhibits and a new array of complementary programming.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, childrens museum of tacoma

Map this on Platial

LeMay Museum

Harold and Nancy LeMay amassed the largest privately owned collection of automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, other vehicles and related memorabilia in the world. At its peak, the LeMay Collection numbered in excess of 3,000 vehicles and thousands of artifacts and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest privately owned collection in the world; impressive if accomplished by a King, but jaw dropping, awesome when accomplished by a local businessman from Tacoma, Washington.

In 1998, Harold and Nancy LeMay formed the 501c3 charitable organization, The Harold E. LeMay Museum, and committed themselves to donating the vast LeMay Collection to the Museum for the benefit of the public. The LeMay Museum was chartered to secure, preserve and interpret the valuable LeMay Collection, along with additional vehicles and artifacts that it may acquire, in order to explore the broad themes of American mobility and lifestyle in an instructive and entertaining manner.

The magnitude of the LeMay Collection, and its power to relate the story of the American experience with the automobile, demands a new paradigm in transportation museums. The LeMay will be an inviting place, eliciting memories and stories from those who visit. It will provide a venue to explore history, design, technology and restoration. In short, the LeMay will create ƒ??Americaƒ??s Auto Experienceƒ? and become a world-class tourist destination in its own right.

The exciting design concepts for the future home of the Harold E. LeMay Museum were approved by the Museumƒ??s Board of Directors at their meeting on November 4, 2003. The design for the LeMay Collectionƒ??s future home are stunning and present a campus complex that includes: a great pavilion with a tower showcasing 150 of the finest cars in the collection; a concourse capable of presenting 100 cars in displays related to culture, speed, design and technology; galleries for experiential opportunities; a restoration shop; a 3-acre courtyard for shows, auctions and rallies; cafes, retail and entertainment areas; a clubhouse for use by sponsoring car clubs; and most impressively - viewable storage for up to 2,000 automobiles on site! The architects sought to design a public gathering place for fun, exploration and celebration in a building that will become an icon for the worldƒ??s foremost auto museum.

The LeMay Museum has received enthusiastic support from the City of Tacoma, a strong partner which has provided the 9 acre building site next to the Tacoma Dome, valued at nearly $17,500,000. Gensler Architects have worked closely with the Tacoma Dome and City to ensure synergy between the Dome and new Museum. The 3-acre auto courtyard will provide a beautiful environment that will invite leisurely walks and lively car rallies.

Nancy LeMay is thrilled with the plans for the Museumƒ??s future home. ƒ??Harold would love the design, the way it suggests a car, and most importantly, that it is designed to become a gathering place for the community. I believe this is a great vision and that we can and will get it doneƒ?.

The museum has poised itself to begin the national campaign to create Americaƒ??s Car Museum in 2007, enabling the Museum to open its new facility in 2009. For more information about Americaƒ??s Car Museum or to schedule a tour of The LeMay collection, please email us at info@lemaymuseum.org or call 253-779-8490.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, lemay museum

Map this on Platial

Pantages Theater

Downtown Tacoma, with an emphasis on reestablishing the Theater District as the "Heart of the City", has accomplished a revitalization of massive proportions over the past two decades. Beginning with the restoration of the Pantages and The Rialto theaters 22 years ago, many of our historic buildings and storefronts have undergone face-lifts and refurbishing. This beautification effort, combined with improved roads and the debut of Sound Transit's Tacoma Link Light Rail system, has made Tacoma's historic Theater District more accessible, user-friendly and welcoming for tourists and local residents than ever before. A wide variety of unique merchants and restaurants, state-of-the-art museums, including the Museum of Glass and the new Tacoma Art Museum building, along with The Washington State History Museum, invite you to enrich your cultural senses and explore the new world of Historic Downtown Tacoma.

In 1975, a group of concerned community volunteers with a strong belief that the arts are essential in stimulating community growth, campaigned and raised money locally to restore Tacoma's Historic Pantages Theater to its original grandeur. Realizing the desperate need for money to keep the doors open, they negotiated with the City of Tacoma to buy the building and to grant funding to the nonprofit organization running the theater. Succeeding in their efforts the Pantages was reopened in 1983. Without the work of these dedicated community volunteers, and the support of the City of Tacoma and its City Council, what became the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in 1991 would not exist today.

Now, with three unique theaters and our own acclaimed performance series, the Broadway Center serves as a vital and valuable arts steward. The Pantages, a beautiful historic theater seating 1,169 audience members, offers a lush performance experience and is home to The Tacoma Opera, Tacoma City Ballet, Tacoma Philharmonic, Tacoma Concert Band, and Tacoma Symphony. The Rialto, a 742-seat theater that originally served as a grand movie palace, hosts the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association, the Northwest Sinfonietta and the Puget Sound Revels. Theatre on the Square, a 302-seat facility with a contemporary flair, offers a more intimate setting and is home to the Tacoma Actors Guild.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Historic Downtown Tacoma and our three exciting theaters filled with rich, cultural performances year-round. Please read on to find out more on the background of each theater.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, pantages theater

Map this on Platial

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, located on 29 acres overlooking beautiful Puget Sound inside the 700-acre Point Defiance Park, was founded in 1905.

In the summer of 1936, two young Tacomans built a saltwater aquarium on the concrete pavilion over Commencement Bay. The aquarium was relocated to its present site within the Zoo in 1963. In the 1980s, the Zoo & Aquarium witnessed a kaleidoscope of changes with the addition of six new naturalistic exhibits. With the passage of a $35 million bond by Tacoma voters in 1999 and a Pierce County sales tax initiative passed in 2000, the Zoo & Aquarium continues to grow. Click here for the latest information on new projects at the zoo.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is a national leader in captive breeding and reintroduction efforts for the endangered red wolf and is also engaged in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA's) Species Survival Plan for the endangered Bali Mynah, golden lion tamarin, snow leopard, clouded leopard, radiated tortoise and Asian elephant.

It is the only facility in the Pacific Northwest to exhibit beluga whales, a Pacific walrus and large sharks. The Zoo is also a past recipient of the Exhibit Achievement Award for its polar bear complex, an honor given by AZA.

Averaging nearly 500,000 visitors annually, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is the second most visited year-round attraction in Pierce County. (Mt. Rainier National Park is the first.)
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, point defiance zoo and aquarium

Map this on Platial

Tacoma Little Theatre

In October of 1918, a group of civic minded community members founded the Tacoma Chapter of the Drama League of America (known as the "Tacoma Drama League" or sometimes as the "Civic Drama League"). The Drama League of America sought to promote theater and the study of theatrical literature and culture as a means of community building as well as individual enrichment. Many such chapters were started across the United States. The Tacoma Chapter was comprised of the Civic Drama School and the Tacoma Little Theatre (TLT). The Drama League provided oversight, governance, and promoted the two subsidiary wings. While TLT's first fully realized production was not until December of 1919, a production of G B Shaw's You Never Can Tell, The time from 1918 to 1919 was filled with classes, play reading and study. That commitment has been the hallmark of TLT's history. While some gaps maybe found in its production history for various reasons including the Great Depression and World War II, records show that organizational activity has never ceased since those early days in 1918.

Today, TLT is the surviving entity of the original three. As such, it has inherited the responsibilities and goals of all three: Governance, Promotion, Education, and Production. TLT is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and is managed by a small professional staff. TLT hires professional directors and contracts designers and other production leadership positions from among those with professional or other significant experience. The actors, crew, ushers, and all other theater functions are accomplished by over 250 volunteers from a four county area giving over 10,000 volunteer hours a year to provide their friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and community with some of the best amateur theater this area has to offer. This puts Tacoma Little Theatre among the largest volunteer driven organizations in Pierce County.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, tacoma little theatre

Map this on Platial
The Working Waterfront Maritime Museum is building a permanent venue to tell the dramatic story of the people, workers, and risk-taking business adventurers who built, and today sustain, our region's working waterfront life and commerce.

The museum leads a growing community effort to preserve it's home, the 104 year old elegantly trussed Balfour Dock building, the last surviving section of the "mile long" warehouse, where it will permanently locate it's exhibits and programs. It will be the only authentic facility in the Pacific Northwest situated at the city's economic and cultural birthplace.

This heritage project will provide:

    * Educational and recreational opportunities
* A museum that tells Tacoma's story
* A Tacoma boating destination along a rebuilt wharf
* Visits by historic tall sailing ships, tour, and heritage vessels
* Engaging exhibits about our port, past and present
* Youth programming
* Small craft boat building & heritage arts preservation
---www.wwfrontmuseum.org
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, working waterfront maritime museum

Map this on Platial

Fort Nisqually Living History Museum

Travel back in time with us and experience life in Washington Territory during the fur trade era. A Hudson's Bay Company outpost built in 1833, Fort Nisqually was the first European settlement on Puget Sound. With a diverse work force of American, English, French Canadian, Hawaiian, Irish, Native American, and Scottish laborers, Fort Nisqually was a bustling center of trade that expanded into a large scale agricultural enterprise.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, fort nisqually living history museum

Map this on Platial

Karpeles Manuscript Museum Tacoma

Six large Greco-Roman columns and portico form a stately entrance to the Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Facing lovely Wright Park, an arboretum of hundreds of mature trees from throughout the temperate world, and just across the street from the Victorian-styled Seymour Botanical Conservatory, it offers an ideal environment for the exhibit of original papers of historic importance.

As both children and adults view the papers in some fifty oak and glass cases, they gain a fresh appreciation of their heritage. The primary sources of history displayed in the museum provide the means for increasing the cultural literacy of the population the museum serves.

Exhibits, which are always admission free, are normally on display for three months at a time.
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, karpeles manuscript museum tacoma

Map this on Platial

Rialto Theatre

---www.broadwaycenter.org
Tags: events, reviews, tacoma, rialto theatre

Map this on Platial
