Dolphin Stadium

Home of the Dolphins and the Marlins. Here, the Marlins have won two World Series, while the Dolphins haven't won a SuperBowl since they moved from the Orange Bowl in downtown Miami. In fact, the Dolphins haven't won the SuperBowl in my lifetime.

Formerly known as Joe Robbie and Pro Players Stadium, Dolphin Stadium is a great venue for football, and while it handles baseball just fine, it's obviously not a stadium designed for baseball.

The Marlins organization and the City of Miami had talked earlier about building a new baseball stadium in downtown Miami, but I heard that the State of Florida wouldn't back the deal with state funds. As much as I would like to see the Marlins get the new stadium downtown, I have to back the governor on the decision he made. For Atlanta and Georgia it's easier....you have one team for each major sport and they're all in one city, which just happens to be the capitol and regional hub. In Florida, on the other hand, you've got multiple teams in each sport spread all over the state, and none of them are in Tallahassee. So if you help build a stadium for the Marlins, why not the D-Rays or any other pro sports team for that matter?

Enough preaching, I saw the Marlins play San Diego here one night with my sister and brother-in-law. The Padres shut them down that night (that was when the Marlins were still one of the newest teams in the Majors). They didn't get good until 1997, when they won it all. The Marlins have still never lost a post-season series.

Florida seems to have become Atlanta's trouble team. Montreal used to be the team that would beat Atlanta without mercy no matter how good the Braves played against everone else. The Marlins have now seemed to fill that role. Think about it, the Marlins have won two world series and were born into a division that the Braves have owned ever since the Marlins came into the league. So while they've never been able to win a division, they still have not been beaten in a post-season series. It's quite a coincidence that because Florida and Colorado came into the league, the Major Leagues were forced to realign divisions. Because of realignment, in order to have an even number of playoff contenders, the wild card slot had to be added. Florida has won two World Series by getting into the playoffs as a wild card team.
Tags: sports, arenas, stadiums, coliseums, stadium, baseball, miami, florida, dolphin, mlb, marlins

Map this on Platial
Now Sydney is something else. Although the city is great, what I wanna do is take a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and dive with the fish there.
The Chop Shop (A-FC Stadium, RIP)

Home of the Braves and Falcons from 1966, when the team moved here from Milwaukee until after the 1996 Olympic Games, when the Olympic Stadium was converted to Turner Field. The Falcons moved to the Georgia Dome when it was built in 1991. Here, Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's homerun record (before my time). When I was a kid, Dale Murphy and Bob Horner were the big stars for the Braves. They were terrible in the 80s, it got so bad that Ted Turner even held races at the stadium with ostrich powered chariots as a promotional to get fans to come watch the games. Then in the 90s, everything changed, we got Bobby Cox as manager and John Schuerholz as GM, and that relationship has produced results: 14 consecutive division titles, 5 pennants, & a world championship aint bad considering what we had just one year before our first pennant, last place.

I remember one night after going to see a game against San Diego in '91, people were out of their heads, the stadium was so loud that I couldn't even think...I'm not exaggerating. Everyone was doing the Tomahawk Chop, shouting that war chant, I mean at the top of their lungs..10s of thousands of people, it got pretty roudy. Anyway, that whole season, we were one loss away from being put out of the division race by the Dodgers. We caught them and barely stayed ahead. That night against the Padres, we were losing, then we tied it, and in the bottom of the ninth, I think it was Ron Gant that hit a 2 run homer to win the game. I've been to many concerts, but I've never heard a place so loud in all my days. The fans were so excited that they continued bellowing that war chant out into the parking lot, and there's a tunnel that connects two lots under Capitol Avenue, and I remember the mass of people walking through there doing that war chant at the top of their lungs and hearing it echo through the tunnel.

See, back in those days, we couldn't even comprehend that an Atlanta team would do well in sports, sure the Hawks were decent, and we had a few individual stars like Nique, Aaron, Niekro, and Murphy, but never so much as a first place finish.

The first Braves batter to step to the plate here was Felipe Alou, and the last batter to step up to the plate in the regular season was his son, Moises Alou, playing for Montreal. His father, Felipe was the Expos manager at the time, too. Freaky. The final game was honorably a World Series game played against New York in 1996.
Tags: sports, stadiums, arenas, coliseums

Map this on Platial

Georgia Dome

Home of the Falcons and the annual Peach Bowl. I think it'll host next year's Final Four as well. Sometimes they have concerts here, but the acoustics are terrible compared to Philips Arena. I've been to the last two Peach Bowls here because they both featured Miami. I wasn't too happy with Miami's performance against LSU, it kind of reminded me of the only Falcons game I went to. They were playing San Francisco, and we were a little bit late, so by the time we walked in, it was already 14-0 49ers. Oh well, at least we got to see the Falcons only points, which came from a field goal. I think Frisco wound up beating us 49-3 or something like that, and to rub it in even more, that was when Deion had just gone to the Niners, ouch! The only other Falcons games I've seen were at the old A-FC Stadium. The teams should clue you in to how long ago it was. I saw them play the St. Louis Cardinals and the LA Rams back in the 80s.

The Dome has also hosted a couple of SuperBowls. My dad worked at them as a nacho vendor. He didn't get to see any of the game, but unlike me, he can say that he's actually been to the SuperBowl. He didn't care anyway since the Falcons weren't in it. We also got to keep the left over cheese, so we had these giant jars of yellow stadium nacho cheese for months at our house. I'm surprised that I haven't suffered a heart attack or massive stroke by now.
Tags: arenas, stadiums, sports, coliseums

Map this on Platial
By the way, our coach who has won multiple College World Series Titles, Jim Morris, was previously Tech's baseball coach.
Tags: sports, stadiums, arenas, coliseums

Map this on Platial

Turner Field

Home of the Braves. It was the Olympic Stadium built for the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Ironically, baseball, which was the only Olympic event that I got to see, was played at the old AFC Stadium. Last summer, my brother-in-law took me to a game, and since his friend's grandmother knows Henry Aaron, we were somehow able to get Aaron's seats. We ended up sitting literally behind homeplate. I don't mean a couple rows back or so, I mean it was us, then the wall, then the umpire's butt. Best seats I've ever had. They played the Cubs that night, and after a rain delay of 1.5 hours with some bad lightning, they ended up winning the game.

The first game I got to see here was a playoff game against Florida in 1997. We won the game, but of course we lost that series because the Marlins went on to win their first World Series that year.

I miss the memories of A-FC Stadium, but this ballpark has better seats and is more stylish. It's truly a stadium built for baseball whereas A-FC was designed to save money by utilizing the generic, bland, coliseum style stadium for multiple sports, of course, mainly baseball and football. Ironically, Turner Field was originally that Olympic Stadium, which had that same bland coliseum shape. They just tore out some pieces in order to shape it how it is today.

tampa

One of my friends went to Tampa .after returning he showed me the videos and pictures of Tampa. I got impressed by Tampa that I decided to go to Tampa. Than I decided to go to Tampa and now I am going to Tampa. The city of Tampa is the county seat of Hillsborough County and the largest city in the greater West Central Florida region. I went to Tampa by plane. It was an interesting journey as I am afraid of traveling in the plane. For staying I had already booked a hotel room. That hotel I searched from the internet as hotels in Tampa . The very first day I reached to the hotel I was little bit tired. So I rested and after resting I took a nice coffee and wake up fully with no laziness. After that I decided to go outside and to travel some interesting places. I first decided to see Florida aquarium. It is situated in Channel side district, just east of downtown. There are lots of things in the place like Restaurant, gift shop; children's play area, touch tank, interactive dive experiences, and eco-tours of Tampa Bay. After that I decided to go to Lowry park zoo. It is one of the top-rated zoos in the country, featuring children's areas, restaurants, a manatee hospital, and first-rate encounters with animals from around the world. I spent some time in the restaurant taking some snacks and all. Viewing the animals in the place I was very happy. Busch garden is the place I next went to see. It is expensive place to see but very fun gaining place. This is a fun place for all ages, kids, teens, and even adults. It has a family friendly atmosphere with lots of things to do and see. The scenery is amazing; it has a feel of different places as you travel throughout the park. Rides vary from a huge merry go round to the famous rollercoaster, Monte. There are many different types of rides to choose from and also many roller coasters to choose from as well. Not a ride fan? You can check out the many shows they perform daily. Ice skating, singing, magic, birds, dolphins and other performances can be found all around the corners of Busch Gardens. Not a show fan either? Then check out the many food establishments spread out through the park. They offer fast food like popcorn and fries to a nice sit down meal. Also check Busch Gardens out during different holidays. They always have special events and offers. For instance, for Halloween they have Howl-O-Scream when the park is open all night long. They also have special events for over night stays, New Years, and special ticket sales for Florida residents. Always watch out for these special events because they happen all the time. If you do one thing while you’re in Tampa, go visit Busch Gardens. It is a great place to remind you about how fun Tampa really is. It is one of the biggest attractions in the Tampa Bay area. The rides, food, and shows will make you want to come back! After that I went to the hotel back. I rested and the next day I prepared my self for going to different places.Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) a Hands-on children's science museum, including an IMAX dome and stellar revolving exhibits.Tampa Museum of Art is an extensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, as well as contemporary and traveling exhibitions.Tampa Theatre, University of Tampa, University of South Florida, Channel side, Channel side, Channel side and The St. Pete Times Forum are some more places to see. After this I came back to my birth place with the sweet memories.
Tags: travel, sports, fun, adventure

Map this on Platial

Ashe Wins Wimbledon

1975. Tennis player Arthur Ashe wins the singles title at Wimbledon, becoming the first African American man to win the prestigious championship. Ashe began to play tennis at the age of seven in a neighbourhood park. He was coached by Walter Johnson of Lynchburg, Va., who had coached tennis champion Althea Gibson. Ashe moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he was coached by Richard Hudlin, before he entered the University of California at Los Angeles on a tennis scholarship. In 1963 Ashe won the U.S. hard-court singles championship; in 1965 he took the intercollegiate singles and doubles titles; and in 1967 he won the U.S. clay-court singles championship. In 1968 he captured the U.S. (amateur) singles and open singles championships. He played on the U.S. Davis Cup team (1963–70, 1975, 1977–78) and helped the U.S. team to win the Davis Cup challenge (final) round in 1968, 1969, and 1970. In the latter year he became a professional.

His criticism of South African apartheid racial policy led to denial of permission to play in that country's open tournament, and, as a consequence, on March 23, 1970, South Africa was excluded from Davis Cup competition. In 1975, when he won the Wimbledon singles and the World Championship singles, he was ranked first in world tennis. After retiring from play in 1980, he became captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team, a position he held from 1981 to 1985.

Ashe underwent coronary bypass operations in 1979 and 1983. In April 1992 he revealed that he had become infected with the virus that causes AIDS, probably through a tainted blood transfusion received during one of those operations. For the remainder of his life, Ashe devoted considerable time to efforts to educate the public about the disease.
Russel Coaches Celtics

1966. Bill Russell, one of the greatest defensive centres in the history of basketball, becomes the first black coach of a major professional sports team (the Boston Celtics) in the United States. Reared in Oakland, Calif., Russell led the University of San Francisco to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in two consecutive seasons (1954-55 and 1955-56). After playing on the U.S. team that won the 1956 Olympic basketball gold medal in Melbourne, he joined the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). With Russell at centre, the Celtics won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He coached the last two of those championship teams but retired as coach in 1969.

On five occasions Russell was voted the most valuable player in the NBA. In 1967 the Associated Press named him one of the five members of its All-America collegiate team for the preceding 20 years; later the AP selected him the outstanding professional basketball player of the 1960s. He was coach and general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics (1973–77). His autobiography, Second Wind: The Memoirs of an Opinionated Man, was published in 1979. After retirement from basketball, Russell was a network sports announcer, wrote a syndicated column, and did television news commentary.
Thieves Take 30-Foot Climbing Wall

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Worrying about thieves is nothing new for retail stores, but Outdoors Inc. thought its 6,000-pound, 30-foot-tall rock-climbing wall was safe. It wasn't.

Someone made off with the $30,000 wall used for rock-climber training.

"It's not like stealing a car or truck or something," said Lawrence Migliara, co-owner of the outdoor-equipment store. "It's going to be hard to conceal this thing."

The wall was snatched from a storage lot, apparently early Wednesday morning.

Outdoor Inc. rents the wall to organizers of outdoors events and festivals. The wall, painted gray to resemble rock, is dotted with raised handholds climbers hang on to.

Migliara said he spread the word about the missing wall to other outdoor equipment outlets and rock-climber groups. He got a phone tip that a truck carrying what might have been the wall was spotted on a highway near Little Rock, Ark.

"Someone's going to take it to Arkansas, put it in a barn and make it their own personal climbing wall," he said.

An employee with the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority had seen the wall near the airport earlier, but did not call police until he heard news it had been stolen.

"I thought it was kind of weird," David Sinclair said. "That's not something you see every day. But I didn't really think much about it until I learned it was stolen."

Migliara said Thursday that he had received a tip that the wall was spotted being towed on a highway near Little Rock, Ark., but it was unclear Friday if the wall ever made it outside Memphis.

The owner of an auto body shop near the airport also called police Friday.

"I think it's absolutely hilarious for somebody to steal that," Samuel Harston said. "My God, what were they going to do with it?"

Memphis police are investigating, but said they had no leads.
Tags: stolen, burglary, sports, climbing wall

Map this on Platial

Philips Arena (The Omni, RIP)

I've never actually been inside Philips Arena, but I've walked past it a couple of times since it's right next to the Georgia Dome and World Congress Center. It's connected to the Omni Hotel and the CNN Center. I had dinner there and got a kickass hoody from the Braves store there when I went to the Peach Bowl just before New Years. Well, I think the reason that I've never been to Philips is that the Hawks have sucked in recent years, and I'm even less of a hockey fan than a basketball fan, so I doubt I'd ever go to a Thrashers game unless the tickets were free, even if they were a top team, which they're not. They've had several good concerts there, but I've never been to any. Most of the concerts that I've been to were at Lakewood.

The Omni however, which sat precisely where Philips sits now, I've been to several times. Mostly to Hawks games back in the 80s and a few in the early 90s. The Hawks had playoff caliber teams back then with Nique, Kevin Willis, Spud Webb, and Doc Rivers, but ever since that crew left, the Hawks haven't been able to get off the ground. My parents told me that they took me to a hockey game when I was little, back when we had the Flames, but I don't remember it. Of course, the Flames had a good team after they moved to Calgary.

I remember the last time I went to the Omni, I saw Soundgarden back in 96 or 97. They were doing a makeup show for the one they did in Atlanta that was somewhat disrupted by the Olympic hoopla. I think it was right around the time that they came out with their last album. Well, after that, they had Metallica, which I didn't get to go to, and then they tore the place down, to build Philips.

Tropicana Field

Home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and at one time, the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL. It was originally called the Sun Coast Dome and later the Thunder Dome. This was a great hockey venue for a good hockey team, but this is a terrible baseball venue for a terrible baseball team. I went there last year when I was staying on Treasure Island for vacation. They got beat by New York, which was one of the teams that they actually played well against last season. I love the coloring of the place and the design, but I just don't like the idea of playing baseball and football in a dome down here. I love the Falcons, and I'm glad they don't have to share with the Braves anymore, but I just don't get it. The climate is awesome down here and in Atlanta. If they can play baseball and football out in the open in New York, Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia, and Boston, why can't they play out in the open down here? It gets just as hot and humid up there in the summer. I'll give Detroit and Minneapolis a free pass on this, but why we have domes in Atlanta, Tampa, and New Orleans is beyond me. Don't give me the hot and humid excuse either, Miami never used a dome and Houston has done away with theirs.
Tags: sports, stadiums, arenas, coliseums

Map this on Platial

Atlanta Dragway

Yes, it's a dragway, no, it's not very close to Atlanta. It's not too far from Athens, and not terribly far from Gwinett County, but it's quite a haul from here to Downtown Atlanta and even farther for us west of town. Interesting that the NASCAR track down in Hampton isn't all that close to Atlanta either, but I suppose it's closer than Commerce.

Well, here's where I get my racing fix. I can't stand to watch the round track drivers ride around in a circle 500 times. If that's your fancy, bonus, but I'm sorry, I've wasted all my patience for a long sporting event on the baseball game. Now when it comes to auto racing, I want it to be quick.

By the time it takes round track to finish one race, the drag strip has hosted scores of races. The top fuel and funny cars here run in the low 4's. That's a quarter of a mile in just over 4 seconds for those who don't know. The power that these machines generate is nothing short of incredible. I saw a car with a jet engine at an air show at Dobbins AFB one time, and that thing looked slower than molasses compared to these cars. I'm sure many of you have seen a Ferrari outrun a fighter jet for a quarter mile. That's what I'm talking about.

Sometimes I wonder, how much faster can they get? If the races end in less than 3 seconds at that level, will people start to complain that they're not getting their money's worth?
Tags: sports, arenas, stadiums, coliseums, race tracks

Map this on Platial

OSBall court behind Wells Fargo Bank

with the heavy use of the bocci courts in the park, and with the bocci league in full swing this time of year, we have been forced underground, to play on a makeshift court in the drive through part of the Wells Fargo parking lot.

This is actually fine, the surrounding walls make for less chasing due to leadfooting, and the extra width is actually a nice change. the downsides are, the constant stench of urine, and the lack of curbs at the bases allows for some extra controversy regarding inbound rolling kicks.

I do highly recommend this court though, and if we keep playing afternoon games, this will certainly become a regular hangout for the teams.
Tags: osball, sports, diy, games, urine, citac, wizards of os

Map this on Platial
Aspen Mountain, a vertical smorgasbord of double-black and tree runs for skier and snowboarders, rises 3,267 feet from the heart of downtown Aspen. Opened in 1947, Aspen Mountain's steeps, bumps and incredible views have been famous for decades.

If you're determined to see celebrities here, check out the tree runs on Aspen Mountain. Look for mystic "shrines" made by locals in homage of Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, John Denver, Marilyn Monroe, Jerry Garcia and others.

The National Sports Daily

Karl was there for the paper's launch, fury and demise. Now 16 years later - he is multimedia blogging his stories from that period. Blogging it exclusively on Visual Editors. e.g. As a sneak preview we have posted the classic 1991 video commercial for The National in the new video widget that appears to the side of every VizEds discussion topic.

Karl has been working on telling this story for a while and his storytelling is great. Just great.

It was a lot of work: figuring out how to convert VCR tape to digital, going thru all the pages and photographing them, scanning all the photos and drawings, and, oh yeah, writing the piece! - Karl Gude
Tags: thenational, karlgude, newspaper, sports, daily, 1990, 1991

Map this on Platial

Stanley Park - Urban Oasis!

The absolute highlight of Vancouver! We spent an entire day here, walking the seawall promenande from the north side of the city and around to the crowded beaches on the south side. Sane people should elect to use the park's bus system or rent some bikes to get around, but if you have all day to linger, walking isn't too bad. Just make sure you have a picnic packed, as there is no way up to the restaurants on Prospect Point from the promenade. (We ended up surviving on a lunch of granola bars...and if you're diabetic or hypoglycemic like we are, this is a very foolish strategy...in our defense the map can be misleading!) Along the way we saw totem poles, a cannon used as a clock, locals enjoying a cricket match, the Vancouver Aquarium, lighthouses, beautiful vistas, exotic boats (one looked like it was an old Chinese trading ship from the 1800s), and locals fishing. Pack your swimming suit and towel to join the locals at the crowded beaches at the end of your walk. This park offers something for everyone.
Tags: vancouver, biking, beaches, sports, parks, outdoors, stanley park

Map this on Platial
As always, a great place to go in Vienna. This year, besides the curling track and Eispalast, MQW got another additional attraction: a racing track for remote cars, with jump, obstacles, etc. Until now only kids are playing there. So somebody has to check out how adults can get a car on that track!

amsterdam

One of my friends went to Amsterdam. After returning he showed me the videos and pictures of Amsterdam. I got impressed by Amsterdam that I decided to go to Amsterdam
. Then I decided to go to Amsterdam and now I am going to Amsterdam. I went to Amsterdam by plane. It was an interesting journey as I am afraid of traveling in the plane. For staying I had already booked a hotel room. That hotel I searched from the internet as cheap hotels in amsterdam . The very first day I reached to the hotel I was little bit tired. So I rested and after resting I took a nice coffee and wake up fully with no laziness. After that I decided to go outside and to travel some interesting places.
As this was my first day then I went to Amsterdams Historisch Museum. Seven centuries of Amsterdam's history is displayed in this beautiful museum by models, maps, paintings, archeological findings and other objects trace the growth of Amsterdam from a medieval town to a modern metropolis. I saw medieval shoes and the rainbow colored umbrella of the Gay Games '98. The Civic Guard Gallery is the only public museum street in the world and shows a selection of group portraits of Amsterdam militia groups. The museum is housed in the former public orphanage. I bought the most beautiful souvenirs in the Amsterdam Gift Shop, there is a library and in the restaurant I got a drink and had something to eat. Then I went to Art Unlimited Postcard Gallery. The Art Unlimited Postcard Gallery is a showcase of Art Unlimited publishing company. It has a collection of 16,000 titles and is the biggest postcard publisher in the world. Apart from its extensive collection of arty cards, the stock includes cards showing bizarre as well as everyday items and situations. Products by Art Unlimited can now also be purchased via Internet.
Second day I went to Amsterdamse Bos. Amsterdam's largest green areas are on the edge of town. The Amsterdamse Bos is easy to find, with boating lakes, an open-air theatre and large playground. While nature lovers may enjoy a beautiful walk through the woods, plane spotters can watch low-flying aircraft coming from Schiphol. The Amsterdamse Bos is also where I found the Bos Museum, which has maps of the park, including walking routes, and Geitenhouderij Ridammerhoeve, a goat farm with 120 goats and loads of adorable kids. It also sells bio-dynamic goat's milk, cheeses and ice-cream, and has a small recreation area and sandpit.
Third day I went to see Rijsmuseum. This museum is considered the "national treasure of the Netherlands." Its exhibits include paintings from the Netherland's 17th century Golden Age by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Rembrandt's "Night Watch" is the museum's centerpiece. I found works from the Middle Ages and the 18th and 19th centuries, superb collections of silver and delftware ceramics, old doll's houses and fantastic examples of Asian Art.
Forth day I went to central shopping streets. The main central shopping streets run in a line from near Central Station to the Leidseplein. I shopped full day. My choices are from fashion. I bought some of the accessories.
Then I returned back to home from there.
