Saint Germaine with Jay

Jay and I try to go to lunch weekly. One week we went to Saint Germaine near his house in Madison Valley.

This is a french bistro with delicious, but rich, food. I opted for what must have been the richest thing on the menu - a mussel casserole with gruyere cheese. I made it half way through.

It was wonderful though. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the cheese was nicely balanced with white wine.

Much recommended.
Tags: washington, seattle, madison valley, four stars, jay fienberg

Map this on Platial

Theater Schmeater

Since its inception in 1992, Theater Schmeaterƒ??s mission has been to produce great plays simply and foster a love of theater as an art form in future audiences. We now incorporate more new plays into each season in a search to find the great plays of our own time, and encourage audiences to embrace them with the same respect that is given to established greats. In particular, we are looking to expand our repertoire to include more plays by women, racial and sexual minorities, and new plays from other countries.

Our work with ƒ??future audiencesƒ? is also very exciting. Since the theater's beginnings it has been our policy to admit any person under the age of eighteen for free to any Theater Schmeater production. Additionally, we have produced annual Free Classics in the Park for the past nine years, through which thousands of families have seen the great plays of classical literature at no charge in parks throughout Seattle.

The Theater is in production year-round, annually presenting 5-6 mainstage shows, 5-6 late night productions and our Free Classic in the Park. Our 2000 season was attended by over 8,100 people at 183 individual performances. Nearly 1,000 people enjoyed the park show and 336 youth took in a show at no cost to them. We also produce a handful of special events, including our annual Wine Auction fundraiser, serving as a venue for the Fringe Festival and co-hosting Tease-O-Rama, a preview performance of upcoming shows at Fringe theaters.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, theater schmeater

Map this on Platial

The Greenroom Before Seeing Porcupine Tree

One review of The Greenroom I saw somewhere on the net said that the only reason to go there was for cheap beer and to get into the concert short line.

At The Showbox, if you go and have drinks at the Greenroom before a show, they close off the bar and let you get in first.

I met up with my friend John Bruels before seeing Porcupine Tree featuring Richard Barbieri, which I wasn't expecting. I didn't even know he was in the band.

They were fairly good. One guy after the show was pretty tweaked and said the venue didn't do them justice.

I wouldn't know. I thought several of their songs were really great until the unnecessarily rocked. There were a few songs they did that were stunning and of them some necessarily rocked.

But all in all, I thought they'd build a great mood and then all of the sudden unnecessarily rock. Which I found disconcerting.

The Greenroom serves a good hamburger and has the ambiance of a moldy shoebox.
Tags: washington, bar, concert, seattle, porcupine tree, john bruels

Map this on Platial

Fremont Baguette Box

Baguette Box has two locations now. Owned by a familiar acquaintance who also owns Monsoon.

I've been to this one a few times. They serve high end sandwiches with a vietnamese high-end twist. Their drunken chicken sandwiches are a must-try as well as their marinated skirt steak. But I must say the best thing on the menu is the Truffle Fries. They are totally excellent.

A great, but expensive, lunch. Two sandwiches, with one order of fries to share and a few drinks is gonna pop you for about $25.
Tags: washington, seattle, fremont, vivan lam, margaret

Map this on Platial

Ototo Sushi

On the 2nd of May 2007

Went to Ototo Sushi with Vivian to try the place out. She'd been there before and reported that the staff was unskilled but the food was very good.

That highly mixed review piqued my interest so we sauntered up there last night in a state of starvation.

The have a fairly nice Sake list. Three or four Junmai Daiginjos to choose from.

We had softshell crab (spider roll) and their special Ototo roll with lobster.

We also picked up a robata plate which had some excellent bacon wrapped scallops (small), yakitori (okay), and salmon (very good).

Their Chicken Karage was not worth repeating

Their Yam tempura used North American golden yam and not the white asian yams. As a consequence, they were chewy and overly sugary.

The sushi was phenomenal though. Very nicely made, well balanced.

We'll certainly go back. We'll go Nigiri next time.
Tags: washington, japanese, sushi, seattle, vivian lam, three stars

Map this on Platial

Erasure, Moore Theatre, July 24th, 2007

Very stressful trip up to Seattle to make it in time - had to cut out early of a tutorial at the Ubuntu Live conference to make it, and even then we cut it very short. Ended up timing it almost perfectly - the show started about 10 minutes after we arrived. When we first got in the venue I noticed it was about 20 degrees hotter in there than outside. Grrrreat!

My wife had gotten me tickets to this sold-out show for my birthday. I was initially excited but, as always, ready for the show to be a complete flop (because so many are.) I was very pleasantly removed of that concern in short order.

They played a few tracks from their new album (yes, they actually do have a new album - and it's actually good!), and they played a lot of their old hits. Chains of love, blue savannah, Drama!, almost every damn thing off of their "Pop 20 Hits" album (although not You Surround Me, which is my favorite - ah well). Despite the fact that they aren't exactly young anymore, they were still great showman and Andy Bell had more energy than most 20-somethings. The outfits he/they wore and the stage was just straight out of the 80s - it was hilarious. This show is definitely in my top 10 list of shows. After a while, I stopped caring that it was about 20000 degrees inside.

Side note: after a very bad experience after a Skinny Puppy concert where I thought that I had permanent hearing damage, I am a real nazi about wearing earplugs at all concerts I attend. Surprisingly the music was mixed so well and the levels were so perfect, I rarely felt I needed to wear my earplugs - except, for when the songs were over. The crowd was so goddamn loud and insane (and the average age was around mid-30s, maybe even 40s! I think we were some of the youngest people there.) I have been to many-a-Morrissey show, who has a legendary cult following, but this crowd was about 10x more insanely in love with Andy Bell than the crowds I've seen for Morrissey. Unbelievable, I know...but true!

Side note 2: The photo below seems to actually be of the stage in Seattle, or at least very similar.
Tags: seattle

Map this on Platial
Qwest Field is a football stadium in Seattle, Washington. It serves as the home field for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and men's and women's Seattle Sounders soccer teams. The stadium opened in July 2002 and was built on the site of the Kingdome, the previous stadium for the Seahawks, Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners, and several other Seattle sports teams. On March 26, 2000, to make way for the construction of the stadium, the Kingdome fell in the world's largest implosion of a single concrete structure.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, qwest field

Map this on Platial

Qwest Field and Event Center

In June 1997, Washington state voters approved a statewide referendum to construct a new, world-class football/soccer stadium and event center. The stadium is home to the Seattle Seahawks, while Qwest Field Event Center houses many consumer shows that previously took place in the Kingdome. A new parking garage provides 2,000 parking spaces at the facility, with more than 5,000 additional spaces available in surrounding parking lots.

This premier, multi-purpose sporting facility includes a 72,000-seat capacity with weather protection for 70 percent of its spectators.

The cost for the stadium is $360 million; cost for the adjoining Qwest Field Event Center is $70 million. The entire project is funded by an innovative public-private partnership, with at least $130 million coming from the private sector (led by Seahawks owner Paul G. Allen). The publicƒ??s contribution is capped at $300 million.

In addition to Seahawks football, the stadium can accommodate many levels of soccer competition, including Major League Soccer, amateur, international, World Cup, and collegiate soccer. The NCAA has expressed interest in holding a future national collegiate soccer Final Four in this facility. The stadium can also accommodate outdoor music concerts and could someday serve as a venue for the Olympics.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, qwest field and event center

Map this on Platial

Science Fiction Hall of Fame

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to inspire new generations to reach beyond the present, imagine the future and explore the infinite possibilities of the universe.

The first museum devoted to this dynamic and far-reaching genre, SFM combines artifacts and information in evocative environments, immersing visitors in science fiction's "alternative worlds." Witness how science fiction touches all forms of artistic expression and reframes the complexities of science, art, culture and the humanities - helping give visitors new insights into themselves and their world.

The museum is also home to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, honoring the legends and luminaries that have shaped humanity's visions of the future. The initial 36 members of the Hall of Fame represent major figures in the establishment of the science fiction genre - from Mary Shelley and H.G. Wells to Sir Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein. New members will be inducted annually as SFM continues to celebrate the artists and thinkers that create the visions of tomorrow.

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of fame is co-located with Experience Music Project in the landmark Frank Gehry building at Seattle Center.

The Inspiration

As one of the most popular and compelling genres of our time, science fiction, from literature to movies and beyond, is loved by millions, and plays a key role in engaging young and old alike in the sciences ƒ?? from astronomy to zoology. Museum founder Paul G. Allenƒ??s early admiration of science fiction and its role in inspiring critical thinking about society, history, culture and politics led to the creation of the first museum of its kind. Fellow founder Jody Patton has been instrumental in crafting the vision and development of the museum. Additionally, SFMƒ??s Advisory Board, comprised of renowned science fiction creators including, among many others, Greg Bear, Ray Bradbury, Octavia Butler, James Cameron, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg, has played a key role in the creation of SFM and will continue to guide it into the future.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, science fiction hall of fame

Map this on Platial

Serafina

Serafina opened its doors in 1991 as an intimate neighborhood restaurant located along Eastlake between the University and Downtown. Its ochre walls, reminiscent of the Tuscan landscape, its intimate, sultry atmoshpere, and its authentic Italian cuisine make it a favorite with diners from around the Puget Sound and beyond. Serafina's philosophy is simple: Offer the freshest, highest quality ingredients, present the food in an honest and inviting way, and provide the casual warmth and soothing ambiance that echoes the welcoming embrace of an Italian home.

The ritual of coming together sharing wine and food with family and friends is the central motif in our lives. Italian food has an immediacy, honesty, and warmth: it possesses the spirit of a grandmother's wisdom and love. Italian food isn't about trailblazing alchemy or edible high fashion; Italian food is about staying connected--to each other, to the past, to the earth.

Our menu recreates many of the dishes that owner Susan Kaufman and chef John Neumark have enjoyed in friends' homes throughout Italy. It is our hope that your dining experience at Serafina will leave you feeling transported to the sublime Italian countryside, and completely taken care of by our sincere, professional staff.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, serafina

Map this on Platial

St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral

St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, as the Cathedral for the Diocese of Olympia, seeks to be a place in which the living God is encountered by all persons, and boldly to proclaim the reconciling Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of the Northwest.
Anglicanism Saint Mark's is the Cathedral church of the Diocese of Olympia. The Diocese of Olympia is a part of the Episcopal Church. In turn, the Episcopal Church is affiliated with the world-wide Anglican Communion. (This includes the Church of England, the Church of Canada, and many others.)

Anglicanism grew out of the unique historical circumstances of the late sixteen- and early seventeenth-century England, which was marked by a powerful sense of national identity and whose populace was split between Catholics and Protestants. Long before the Protestant Reformation, the English church was notorious for its sense of independence. Finally severed from Rome under Henry VIII, the Anglican Church took shape theologically under Henry's three children: Edward VI, a firm Protestant who reigned for six years, long enough to institute the first Book of Common Prayer, a decidedly Protestant document; Mary I, a devout Catholic who reigned for five years, long enough to reinstate certain Catholic practices that Edward had proscribed; and finally the Pragmatic Elizabeth, who in her forty-year reign labored brilliantly to forge not only a society but an established church that was broad enough to include all but the most extreme Catholics and Protestants.

The result was--and is--a church of astonishing theological breadth. But it is not breadth in a lax, lazy, anything-goes sense. The Anglican Church, when truest to its own theological traditions, views the mind not as a potential instrument of the Devil but as a gift of God. And it takes seriously the idea of the community of faith as a context within which people from different backgrounds and with varying perspectives can openly share their experiences of God, can attend to one another in a spirit of love, and can thereby gain insights that may help every member of the community to move somewhat closer to God's truth.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, st. marks episcopal cathedral

Map this on Platial

TEAPOT VEGETARIAN HOUSE - Seattle

The Teapot is proud to present a full vegan menu. This is the second menu since we became vegetarian seven years ago. In it you will find a bigger and better selection (we hope), and a more balanced and well-rounded choice to meet every taste and need. We are still committed to offering healthy food and continually introduce innovative entrees to our menu. We strive to offer you good service in a clean, inviting and peaceful environment. We have served the Capitol Hill neighborhood for the past 15 years, and we hope to continue to do so for many more. We also have a new location in Redmond near Microsoft.

Throughout our menu you will find Pan-Asian selections from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and China. The owners and chefs, with 52 years of restaurant business experience, have researched and perfected these dishes for the last few years and have added them to the Teapot menu. All items are now completely vegan ie, free from milk and eggs and all animal products. To encourage others to try a vegetarian diet, we have retained entrees from the old Mandarin Restaurant Menu (our former incarnation) but have replaced the meat with high quality soy substitutes. We, however, will not compromise the taste of any of our dishes for any reasons except two: To promote a healthier diet and compassion for life. Eat and be truly merry.

HOURS

Daily - 11AM - 10:30PM

Sometimes featuring live entertainment
Friday and Saturday evenings from 7PM -
Tags: vegan, events, seattle, reviews, teapot vegetarian house seattle

Map this on Platial
Restored and updated from the bones of the historic Embassy Theatre, this 300-seat performance space is at once timeless and modern. The classic look of the gold-framed, red-curtained stage blends seamlessly with the contemporary, sleek, uncluttered array of half-moon booths and free-standing tables.

Arranged in tiers, the Mainstage provides clear sight lines from every seat. The intimate dimensions mean that even the late arriver to a sold-out show is no more than 35 paces from the stage. And for those get-up-out-of-your-seat acts, the tables directly in front of the stage can be cleared to make way for a dance floor.

Every particular of the Mainstage---in interior design, sound and lighting---is aimed at making the show come alive for the audience. Even the free-standing chairs used in the theatre have a special quality: they’re easy to rock in time with the music.

The Mainstage is also well-equipped for special functions, from large-scale parties to corporate or media events. And, of course, there is a fully-appointed kitchen---featuring a Wild Ginger-inspired menu---and complete service bar for all food and beverage requirements.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, triple door

Map this on Platial

University of Washington - Seattle

Founded 4 November 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education on the Pacific coast. The University is comprised of three campuses: the Seattle campus is made up of seventeen schools and colleges whose faculty offer educational opportunities to students ranging from first-year undergraduates through doctoral-level candidates; the Bothell and Tacoma campuses, each developing a distinctive identity and undergoing rapid growth, offer diverse programs to upper-division undergraduates and to graduate students.

The primary mission of the University of Washington is the preservation, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge. The University preserves knowledge through its libraries and collections, its courses, and the scholarship of its faculty. It advances new knowledge through many forms of research, inquiry and discussion; and disseminates it through the classroom and the laboratory, scholarly exchanges, creative practice, international education, and public service. As one of the nation's outstanding teaching and research institutions, the University is committed to maintaining an environment for objectivity and imaginative inquiry and for the original scholarship and research that ensure the production of new knowledge in the free exchange of facts, theories, and ideas.

To promote their capacity to make humane and informed decisions, the University fosters an environment in which its students can develop mature and independent judgment and an appreciation of the range and diversity of human achievement. The University cultivates in its students both critical thinking and the effective articulation of that thinking.

As an integral part of a large and diverse community, the University seeks broad representation of and encourages sustained participation in that community by its students, its faculty, and its staff. It serves both non-traditional and traditional students. Through its three-campus system and through educational outreach, evening degree, and distance learning, it extends educational opportunities to many who would not otherwise have access to them.

The academic core of the University of Washington is its College of Arts and Sciences; the teaching and research of the University's many professional schools provide essential complements to these programs in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural and mathematical sciences. Programs in law, medicine, forest resources, oceanography and fisheries, library science, and aeronautics are offered exclusively (in accord with state law) by the University of Washington. In addition, the University of Washington has assumed primary responsibility for the health science fields of dentistry and public health, and offers education and training in medicine for a multi-state region of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The schools and colleges of architecture and urban planning, business administration, education, engineering, nursing, pharmacy, public affairs, and social work have a long tradition of educating students for service to the region and the nation. These schools and colleges make indispensable contributions to the state and, with the rest of the University, share a long tradition of educating undergraduate and graduate students toward achieving an excellence that well serves the state, the region, and the nation.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, university of washington seattle

Map this on Platial

Vera Project

The Vera Project (Vera) is what every teenager needs, a music-arts center run by and for youth. By engaging participants at all levels of music production and community organizing, Vera strives to fulfill its mission to fuel personal and community transformation through the vehicle of popular music shows produced in partnership with young people in Seattle.
Since its inception in 2000, Vera has provided a unique resource to Seattleƒ??s youth and music community by maintaining a safe, alcohol and smoke free environment for people of all ages to come together and experience music in a way that transcends commercial entertainment and erases divisions between performer, staff and audience. Vera uses its downtown location as a means to bridge the divisions that exist between neighborhoods and bring people together in a neutral and open space. Weekly concerts and events fuse with educational programming and a participatory governance structure to give young people an empowering, inclusive sense of music that stresses their ability to positively affect their surroundings, both within the organization and in their daily lives.

Vera takes the primacy of music in young peopleƒ??s lives as an opportunity to create learning experiences and build self-awareness and self-esteem in an audience with few chances to express itself otherwise. Through these learning experiences and an emphasis on the process of popular music, Vera promotes critical thinking, empathy, emotional intelligence and civic participation. Vera uses the power of music as a primary vehicle with which to develop a community of healthy, compassionate and innovative individuals. Veraƒ??s passionate, patient, and professional approach to popular music has opened up new worlds to thousands of young people, many of whom have never actively taken part in their communities before. Vera kids become great adults.
Tags: events, seattle, reviews, vera project

Map this on Platial

Wonderful Szechuan Food

I'm surprised this hasn't shown up on my map before.

Szechuan Bistro has amazingly good food. Like many other restaurants we frequent, it's family owned and we sure like them a lot.

This week, Ken Thompson was down from Vancouver. So he and Vivian and I went.

We had Gai Lan, Spicy chicken, hand shaven noodles with pork, and their monster pot stickers.

Trust me, this is at 85th and Greenwood in Seattle. You must must go.
Tags: szechuan, washington, chinese, seattle, vivian lam, ****, ken thompson

Map this on Platial

Disappointed at Tamarind Tree

We've been to Tamarind Tree several times. On Wednesday night we went with Ken Thompson, a friend from Vancouver, and Ivy Chang, Vivian's chocolateering friend.

It was not a good experience. They were out of beef and out of several liqueurs, so about everything we tried to order was not in stock.

Then at the end, they packed up all the sides and didn't send home any of our main courses.

So we won't be headed back any time soon.
