The two upper levels are built on extended cantilevers, with the front of the Terrace Level only 34 feet above the field, creating a sense of intimacy reminiscent of the great old ballparks, but with outstanding sight lines from every seat and no obstructed views.

The handsome and historic Western Metal Supply Company Building has been renovated and incorporated into the Ballpark, with the left-field foul pole attached to its southeastern corner, 334 feet from home plate. The 95-year-old structure houses the Padres Team Store on the first floor, with a door opening onto a standing room area in left field. The second and third floors feature festive Party Suites. A restaurant on the fourth floor provides terrace dining with superb views of the field. There is bleacher seating and standing room on the roof, 80 feet above the field.

Located at the hub of the regional transportation system, with easy access by car, Trolley, the Coaster, bus and future water taxis, the Ballpark has ample parking and inviting promenades to and from your vehicle or public transit.

In short, PETCO Park is attractive, efficient, comfortable and strikingly beautiful ƒ?? just like San Diego.
San Diego Air and Space Museum

The California Pacific International Exposition of 1935-36 spurred the development of the south end of Balboa Park. The Ford Motor Company, which elected to be the Exposition's major exhibitor, invested $2.8 million to build a hall for the Transportation Exhibition. The hall was designed to showcase the 1935 line of Ford cars and products, as well as other forms of transportation.

Construction progressed rapidly. Ford made the decision to build in February, and by May 29 they were celebrating completion of the project. The resulting building, with a 45,500 sq. ft. exhibit area, was the most expensive - and the most attention-grabbing - of the Exposition. It didn't hurt that potential Ford customers were able to test drive the latest Ford automobiles on a small road that wound around behind the building!

When the exposition ended in 1936, Ford donated the building to the City of San Diego. Subsequent users of the space included the National Guard and the Red Cross. During World War II, the Vocational School for Aircraft Industry trained employees in the building. After the war, park maintenance used it for storage. Plans to level the building due to the high costs of upkeep and restoration were halted in 1973 when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. At that time the City Council designated the structure as the future home of the San Diego Air & Space Museum .
View of Ford Building on the Hill

The building represents a style of architecture called "Streamlined Moderne." During the late thirties, the building reflected the latest in design and technology. The designer, Walter Dorwin Teague, made sure that "every line and detail was carefully worked out to exemplify the latest ideas in Moderne industrial architecture." Similar buildings were built for the New York World Fair and San Francisco Fair of the same year. None of these other buildings exist today, making the Ford building one of the last remaining examples of this historical architectural style.

Planning was well underway to relocate the Aerospace Museum when in 1978 an arson fire destroyed the existing collection, then held in the Balboa Park Electrical Building. The citizens of San Diego rallied after the fire, donating funds and personal possessions to help the museum's collection grow again. With a much smaller--but continually growing--number of items on display, the museum re-opened to the public in the Ford Building on June 28, 1980.

A few years later, the Aerospace Museum's collection grew to such an extent that an alternate location was needed to store the overflow. Two hangars at Gillespie Field were acquired to store many of the Museum's additional airplanes, as well as an educational center and restoration shop. The Gillespie Field Annex, as it called today, serves the community of San Diego by holding regular education activities for the East County and El Cajon school districts, and offers free tours and workshops for the public.

Over 10,000 square feet of murals were painted on the building's interior walls. Designed by famed Mexican artist Juan Larrinaga and entitled The March Of Transportation, the principle mural chronicles manƒ??s ideas and methods of transportation through history, offering insight into what the artists of the 1930s predicted for the future of transportation.
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, san diego air and space museum

Map this on Platial

San Diego Museum of Man

In 1911, San Diego began planning the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, creating a unique educational concept to distinguish itself from the San Francisco exposition planned for the same year.

Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett of the School of American Archaeology (now School of American Research) was appointed designer of the central exhibit The Story of Man through the Ages. He took expeditions to the Southwest to collect prehistoric pottery and to Guatemala to make replicas of Maya monuments.

Dr. Ales Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian Institution was engaged to collect specimens for the most comprehensive physical anthropology exhibit ever assembled. Expeditions were sent to Alaska, Siberia, Africa, and the Philippines, and European museums provided important casts and photographs of early man fossils. From Peru, skeletal material and rare trephined skulls were collected.

The Panama-California Exposition opened on January 1, 1915, with The Story of Man through the Ages enjoying public acclaim.

As the Exposition neared its close in November 1915, a farsighted group of San Diegans formed the San Diego Museum Association.

Led by prominent citizen George Marston, they were determined to retain the valuable collections and to establish a museum of anthropology. Dr. Hewett became the first Director, and important collections followed, notably the Jessop Weapon Collection and the Scripps Egyptian Collection. Field work by Museum staff in the 1930s focused on prehistoric sites of Southern California. Through the efforts of pioneer archaeologist Malcolm J. Rogers, hundreds of sites, many now destroyed by development, were recorded.

Because of the Museum's concentration on anthropology, its name was changed in 1942 to the Museum of Man (with "San Diego" added in 1978). During World War II, the Museum was converted to a hospital, and exhibits and collections were stored. During the 20-year directorship of Clark Evernham, beginning in 1951, the Museum entered a period of community outreach. Important acquisitions included Mexican apparel and ceramics.

In 1966, the collection and research focus of the Museum was narrowed to the peoples of the Western Americas. This redefinition of purpose capitalized on collection strengths and acknowledged our proximity to these cultures.

In 1972, Lowell E. English, retired Marine Corps Major General, became Director. For the next decade, the focus was on establishing a strong financial base.

The Collectors Club was started in 1974 to support collection acquisitions. The Haber Collection of Mayan figurines and the Harkleroad Collection of Southern California archaeological material were accessioned.

A 1980 amendment of the mission allowed for temporary exhibits from regions outside our area of specialization to provide cross-cultural perspective. In 1981, the Museum commenced planning for large scale capital improvements and exhibit enhancement. Anthropologist Douglas Sharon became Director, and major projects were undertaken: doubling of collection storage, remodeling the lobby, paving the Plaza de California, restoration of the historic St. Francis Chapel, installation of an elevator and modern HVAC, addition of a 16,000 sq. ft. education and design center, and renovation of expanded exhibits.

Through the 1980s and early 1990s important collections were acquired: the Gildred Collection of pre-Hispanic Peruvian ceramics, Mexican and Guatemalan apparel, the Stanford-Meyer Osteopathology Collection, the Cannon Collection of Southern Californian Indian basketry, and the Smith Collection of Egyptian antiquities. The Museum's research collections reached 72,000 items plus 37,000 historic photographs, mostly of Native Americans, and unquantified archaeological holdings.

In 1994, recognizing that cultural preservation is intimately linked to the environment, the Museum's mission was expanded to include human ecology. As we approach a new century, our original philosophy, whereby collections form the basis for relevant exhibits, education, and research, is being reaffirmed.
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, san diego museum of man

Map this on Platial

SeaWorld Adventure Park

        SeaWorld San Diego's History

SeaWorld was founded in 1964 by four graduates of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). They had originally considered the idea of building an underwater restaurant. Although this idea was not technically feasible, the concept grew into the idea of a marine zoological park on 22 acres along the shore of Mission Bay in San Diego. With an initial investment of $1.5 million, 45 employees, several dolphins, sea lions, and two seawater aquariums, SeaWorld drew more than 400,000 visitors its first year ƒ?? a clear indication of the publicƒ??s curiosity and fascination for marine animals.

In the earliest years, the park was held as a private partnership. Then, in 1968, SeaWorld offered its stock publicly, enabling the company to grow. In 1970, a second SeaWorld park was built ƒ?? in Aurora, Ohio, near Cleveland. It was followed by a park in Orlando, Florida in 1973, and the largest park, which opened in San Antonio, Texas in 1988. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. (HBJ), owned and operated SeaWorld from 1976 to 1989. Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. purchased the SeaWorld parks from HBJ in November 1989. The parks are owned and operated by Busch Entertainment Corporation (BEC), one of the Anheuser-Busch Companies. BEC also owns and operates Adventure Island in Tampa, Florida; Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia; Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida; Sesame Place in Langhorne, Pennsylvania; and the newest member of the BEC family ƒ?? Discovery Cove in Orlando. In January 2001, BEC sold SeaWorld Cleveland to Six Flags. Over the years, SeaWorld has grown from a small collection of marine animals into one of the largest and most respected marine zoological collections in the world. Its three parks are accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) ƒ?? a recognition that these facilities have achieved high levels of animal husbandry techniques; medical care; and management competence in their zoological exhibition, collections, public education, and park operations.

Throughout SeaWorldƒ??s history, the parks have remained committed to SeaWorldƒ??s founding principles of quality in the areas of education, entertainment, research, and conservation.
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, seaworld adventure park

Map this on Platial
Old Town is conveniently located just five miles north of downtown San Diego and the San Diego International Airport.

The Theatre in Old Town was built in the late 1970s and is a non-historic structure that resembles an old fashioned barn. The theatre interior is very casual and comfortable. With just under 250 seats and only 9 rows, there truly is no bad seat in the house. There is ample free parking next to and across the street from the theatre.

The theatre space can be rented for business meetings and other gatherings.
Old Globe Theatre

Modeled after Shakespeareƒ??s Old Globe in London, the Old Globe Theatre was built in 1935 to present abridged versions of Shakespeareƒ??s plays as part of the California Pacific International Exposition. At the conclusion of the exposition in 1937, a non-profit production corporation, the San Diego Community Theatre, leased the theatre and adjacent building from the City of San Diego (an arrangement that continues today) and renovated the theatre for ongoing use.

On December 2, 1937, the remodeled Old Globe Theatre opened with a production of John Van Drutenƒ??s The Distaff Side. In the cast was a young actor named Craig Noel, whose presence as an actor, director, and artistic leader would guide the theatreƒ??s growth through more than five decades of continuous productions, and whose role as Artistic Director continues to this day.

On March 8, 1978, an arson fire destroyed the landmark theatre. Fortunately, the administrative offices, rehearsal hall, dressing rooms, scenery and costume shops, and the Cassius Carter Centre Stage were spared from the flames. In 1982, the new 580 seat in The Old Globe opened with a production of Shakespeareƒ??s As You Like It.

Today, the Old Globe Theatre is the flagship venue for the organization, where several world premieres, such as Into the Woods, Play On!, The Full Monty and Imaginary Friends have been staged, and have then gone on to enjoy successful runs on Broadway.

The Old Globe's Artistic Director Jack O'Brien says of the Old Globe Theatre, "I love the generosity of this theatre space, its fluid design, its perfect sight-lines, its great acoustics. If theatre in San Diego has a cradle, The Old Globe is it."
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, old globe theatre

Map this on Platial

Copley Symphony Hall

San Diego's Symphony Hall opened as the Fox Theatre on November 8, 1929. Philip Gildred, a carefree young entrepreneur whose travel plans were delayed in San Diego on his way from South America to New York, liked San Diego so much that he embarked upon a plan to give the city a landmark theatre and built the Fox Theatre for $2.5 million. It is estimated that today's cost would be 20 times that amount.Originally the full city block was intended to be a hotel, a theatre and a parking garage. With the economic storm clouds approaching, Gildred altered his plans and instead surrounded the 68,000 square foot movie theatre with an office building complex, now known as Symphony Towers.

The new Fox received only the best. In order to give patrons more comfort, seating was reduced; a huge $50,000 pipe organ was built into five walled chambers of the theatre; and the interior decorative motif was cast in Rococo theme and is typical of the French Renaissance period. Many of the decorative details on the walls and ceilings were copied accurately from their original designs in the chateaux along the Loire, at Blois, Chambord, Tours and Azay le Rideau.

Built by William Simpson Construction Co., the theatre was designed jointly by W. Templeton Johnson (who also had to his credit the design of the Fine Arts Gallery, Serra Museum in the Presidio, and Lions downtown store) and William Day of the firm Weeks and Day. William Day was also credited with the design of the 1938 San Francisco World Exposition. Over the years, the interior has been preserved in its original motif. The theatre is believed to be the last surviving example of designer William Day's creative work with this decor.

In addition to a trainload of Hollywood personalities brought to San Diego for the opening night festivities in 1929, San Diegans turned out in record numbers to participate in the parade from Broadway to the theatre. The city's population was 147,000. The crowd was estimated at 100,000. Some of the guest stars on opening night were Jackie Coogan, Buster Keaton, George Jessell and Will Rogers.

On opening day the Fox became San Diego's largest movie theatre, a position it has held to this day. It was then the third largest in the state, but today stands as California's largest. Because of San Diego's cross section of population, the Fox also became a choice for motion picture sneak previews. Walt Disney loved the atmosphere so much that he opened all of his movies at the Fox.

Through an agreement with the City of San Diego, the Fox Theatre became the city's second official civic theatre. In 1984, the entire "Fox block" was sold to Charlton Raynd Development Company, who in turn donated the theatre to the San Diego Symphony. In March of 1985, a $6 million renovation project, which took six months to complete, employed people who were dedicated to the purpose of restoring the theatre and the pipe organ to its original grandeur.
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, copley symphony hall

Map this on Platial

Qualcomm Stadium

August 20, 1967 - the San Diego Chargers take the field to play their first game in the newly completed San Diego Stadium. Formerly the Los Angeles Chargers, owner Barron Hilton had been convinced by local sports writer Jack Murphy to move his team from the LA Coliseum to San Diego. Unfortunately, San Diego had no major league Stadium when the team moved here in 1961. Thus, Murphy's next challenge was to convince the City to build a stadium for their team. This was accomplished when Proposition 1 passed by a wide margin and $27.75 million was authorized to build a new state-of-the-art multi- purpose stadium with 53,000 seats.

In 1984, the Stadium was expanded to nearly 61,000 and 50 suites added at cost of $9.1 million. In 1997 a major expansion costing $78 million was undertaken with the following taking place: 10,500 seats were added bringing the total seating capacity to 71,500; 34 suites added for a total of 113; Club Level seating added with 4 lounges; upgraded food service; two new video screens and a practice facility for the Chargers.

Top of Page

Naming of the Stadium
The original name of the Stadium was San Diego Stadium when Jack Murphy died on September 24, 1980 then Mayor Pete Wilson and the City Council voted to rename the Stadium San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Some citizens were opposed to naming the Stadium after Jack Murphy and in 1984 the issue was put before the voters. The voters approved leaving the name San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Once again in 1997, the name changed. QUALCOMM a local San Diego Telecommunication Company agreed to pay the City $18 million to complete the expansion project. In return the name of the Stadium change to QUALCOMM Stadium. QUALCOMM has the naming rights until the year 2017.
Tags: events, san diego, reviews, qualcomm stadium

Map this on Platial
