When I *heard* about the 9/11 attacks

At 9:03 AM on 11 September 2001, the second airplane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. I was in Florida, at the Emma T. Booker Elementary School, listening to children read. Chief of Staff Andrew Card came over and whispered in my ear, "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack."

What did I, the Commander in Chief do? Nothing. I sat there. I sat for well over 5 minutes, doing nothing while 3,000 people were dying and the attacks were still in progress.

Not only did I, the leader of the free world sit as my country was attacked, the Secret Service also did nothing. I was appearing in public at a previously announced photo-op. I was a sitting duck. The attacks were ongoing at that point (planes had yet to hit the Pentagon or the field in Pennsylvania), and nobody knew how much more destruction was going to happen. Were there two, three, four, eight more planes hijacked and on their way to crash into prominent buildings?

Was one headed for the school, where anyone who checked my public itinerary would know I was located? Were other terrorists planning to detonate dirty nukes? Were they going to release anthrax or smallpox or sarin? Was an assassination squad going to burst into the school and get me? Was a suicide bomber going to ram a truck full of explosives into this classroom?

During the midst of the attacks, any of these things could've happened. Yet I calmly sat here, seemingly unconcerned. My Chief of Staff likewise doesn't think that America in flames warrants my immediate attention. And the Secret Service utterly fails to do its job of grabbing me, the President of the United States and getting me to safety. It's truly inexplicable.

And it's something the administration isn't too eager to trumpet. We haven't released footage of my (non)actions during this historic moment of American history. Until now, the only available footage had been a little film put together by Booker Elementary. The problem is, there's a jump edit in the footage: From the time Card whispers to me until the end of the scene in the classroom, only 2 minutes and 10 seconds elapse.

But this new, fuller footage shows me sitting for a full five minutes after I've been told that "America is under attack."

I declined to take action even longer than this, but this footage ends before I leave the classroom. Thanks to an amazing article by Allan Wood and Paul Thompson, we know what happened after the footage suddenly cuts off:

The only source to describe what happened next is Fighting Back by Bill Sammon. Publishers Weekly described Sammon's book as an "inside account of [my] administration's reaction to 9-11 [and] a breathless, highly complimentary portrait of the president [showing] the great merit and unwavering moral vision of his inner circle." [Publisher's Weekly, 10/15/02] Sammon's conservative perspective makes his account of my behavior at the end of the photo-op all the more surprising. I am described as smiling and chatting with the children "as if I didn't have a care in the world" and "in the most relaxed manner imaginable." White House aide Gordon Johndroe, then came in as he usually does at the end of press conferences, and said, "Thank you, press. If you could step out the door we came in, please." A reporter then asked, "Mr. President, are you aware of the reports of the plane crash in New York? Is there anything...", But I interrupted, and recalling my orders, "DON'T SAY ANYTHING YET," I responded, "I'll talk about it later." But still I did not leave. "I stepped forward and shook hands with [classroom teacher] Daniels, slipping my left hand behind her in another photo-op pose. I was taking my good old time. ... I lingered until the press was gone." [Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism - From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 90]

For a detailed portrait of what I did and didn't do on 9/11, you can do no better than to read this article here. It is based completely on reports from mainstream media and statements from government officials.

Apologists claim that I didn't leave simply because I didn't want to interrupt and upset the children, but this falls apart for several reasons:

1) America is being attacked, thousands are dying, and I don't know if we're facing nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks, as well. Couldn't I just say, "Excuse me, kids, I need to take care of something. It's part of being President, y'understand. I'll be back as soon as I can."

2) At the moment Card told me about the second plane, the children weren't reading to me. They had finished reading words from an easel and were reaching under their chairs for a book when Card whispered to me. Another 30 seconds would elapse before they started reading again. This pause was a perfect time for me to politely excuse myeslf, but nooooo.

3) By staying, I not only endangered my own life, but the lives of all of these children. Wouldn't it be better to risk upsetting them than to risk letting them die in a terror attack?

4) Even if I was afraid of hurting the kiddies' feelings, what about my Secret Service? Have they been trained not to attempt to save my life if it might bother some schoolchildren?

5) What about Chief of Staff Andrew Card, White House Spokesperson Ari Fleischer, and other officials who were in that classroom? Didn't they feel that a 21st-century Pearl Harbor and a potential attack on the President himself were worth some sort of action?

6) Finally, and most damningly, this excuse doesn't explain why I continued to mill around the classroom for several minutes after the children had finished reading.

Somewhere, someone has the complete, uncut footage of me in Booker Elementary, from the time I enter the classroom until I finally walk out. If you have this footage, please send it to me, seriously.

Hillsdale Library

This is library location is a green building. Here is what their website say: Hillsdale Library was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Gold certification in 2004. LEED™ is a national rating system and accreditation tool used to develop high performance, sustainable buildings. Buildings are awarded points and achieve a certain level of certification based on project procedures and design elements that are indicators of a "green building." The library, opened in March 2004, was the first Multnomah County building to receive LEED™ certification, a goal established by Multnomah County officials when they approved the construction of the building. The City of Portland has adopted LEED™ as the basis of design for all of its new construction.

As a green building, Hillsdale Library offers many benefits, including: environmental protection (reduced air and water pollution, reduction in solid waste creation, and minimized depletion of natural resources); economic advantages (reduced operating costs and optimized economic performance over the life of the building); and health and safety benefits (better indoor air quality, decreased harmful pollutants indoors and out, and increased personal satisfaction).

To achieve LEED™ certification, Hillsdale Library incorporates many environmental design elements that significantly reduce or eliminate the building's negative impact on the environment, while providing an inviting, friendly and comfortable place for library users of all ages.

One summer I drove up to Seattle from Los Angeles on a whim, soft of drifting around and taking things in. I asked a stranger in a radical bookstore to draw me a map of the town (in a platial fashion). He drew a map with directions to some great vegan restaurants, a pirate radio station and also directions to this great resource for writers. The Richard Hugo House is the home of the Zine Archive and Publishing Project, an extensive catalogued zine library. I recognized the librarian when I visited as the girl who wrote a zine about haircuts, specifically bangs.

It was great to drift around town and find this great place, where people can attend readings, hold workshops and have access to things like book/zine libraries!
Tags: reading, books, seattle, zine, hugo, hunter, writer, writing, house, classes, library, archive, read

Map this on Platial

Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders Reading

I hadn't been getting out to do interesting things about town for a while, so I was a little bit giddy about actually leaving home after dark, skipping the family meal, and going to a reading.

I went to this event with my friend Justine, who is a neurobiologist. (I'm just saying that to establish our geek cred. It doesn't have much to do with anything, really.) I was surprised when I got to the venue to discover that the Center for New Words was holding the reading in a tiny room of the YWCA in Central Square. The room was way too small. I had to sit on the floor under the podium, which I actually didn't mind at all. I really was just plain surprised. I hope that they manage to make some kind of arrangements with some of the local book stores around town for the future.

Charlie's essay was great. It was all about discovering herself as a geeky policy wonk at the same time as she discovered herself as a woman (Charlie is transexual). It was funny and very well written. She seemed nervous, but who wouldn't be. She had on some adorable sequined Mary Janes. I thought I had gotten a picture of them, but I guess not.

Nina Simone Dudnick read her essay "Sex and the Single (Woman) Biologist." She was a good reader. The essay was part about sexism in the Harvard Medical School and part about how men won't go out with scientists, which is ironically quite sexist.

Justine and I spent some time over a plate of nachos after the show talking about this. Being smart has never prevented me from getting laid. Granted, I'm not a scientist. But Justine is, and she has had no shortage of male admirers, and even three marriage proposals. Justine was sort of bristling about this essay after the reading. The sexist idea that men don't want to be with smart women really irked her, mostly because she has never found it to be true. I have to say that I concur. There are some irredeamable, emotionally retarded, insecure, sexist douche bags out there, but who wants to go out with them anyway? These are the guys who moulder in cranky bachelorhood and are generally more to be pitied than to be reviled. For the most part, the boys are all right. About the power structure in Harvard Medical School being sexist I don't doubt it, and the part of her essay which dealt with that was very interesting.

Diana Husmann, an undergraduate student at MIT read her essay, "The Dress," all about being a girly-outdoorsy geeky girl.

Annalee Newitz read last, excerpts from her essay, "When Diana Prince Takes off her Glasses." I'm a fan of Newitz, which is the reason I dragged myself out of the house to go to the reading. I'm looking forward to reading the whole essay. It's about role models and mentoring for young women and the insidious ways in which sexism can make you paranoid, among other things.

Annalee ended her reading with the words "we rule," which caused a sort of comic quiproquo during the qa. The first question came from a woman who was not a native English speaker and she asked, "If you rule, what are you fighting about?"

While the question came partly from a misunderstanding of American idioms, it is true that there are a lot of women I know who think that the fight against sexism is over, and that we won. It's important to appreciate what our mothers and grandmothers did to get where we are today, but it's also a mistake to think that sexism is a thing of the past. Sexism also is not a male-only problem. It's incredibly complicated.

Another thing Justine and I talked about was the way a sexist attitude becomes so ingrained in young women that they adopt the kinds of postures toward other women that they'll eventually be be fighting themselves. She and I were both tomboys growing up. Sort of honorary males, until puberty (and a little beyond). I always had a couple really wonderful female friends, but for the most part, I thought women were stupid. If there were men and women having a serious conversation, I would tend to tune out the women. Some time in my early 20s, I was cured of this misogyny but I feel a bit of shame about it still.

This kind of internalized, subconcious sexism against ourselves is maybe the most wretched form I know. After the reading I thought a bit about my own female role models. Mother, older friends, relatives, fictional heroes, teachers. Some of my first female role models were three heavy metal girls who took me under their wing when I started high school. They may not seem like likely role models for me or even good role models, but that's not really true. These girls, who were 17 and 18 years old, were strong. They were powerful. They were rebellious, sexual, outspoken, funny, and confident. They were never ignored and they didn't take any shit.
