Rarebreed

        (From Daily Candy)

Spray of Light

These days, seems like anyone with a Sharpie and a stack of stickers can claim to be a street artist.

What’s become of the old-school aerosol artist (and we don’t mean your tanning lady) who braved building tops and overpasses with backpacks full of paint cans and a fanatical assortment of spray caps?

They’re at graffiti mecca Rarebreed, opening its new music/paint/T-shirt boutique off South Street this Saturday. Stop by and snag some tees by Plan and spray paint, and pick from Rarebreed’s selection of records and CDs to create a soundtrack for your urban art extravaganza.

The cleaner, whiter, brighter walls also double as an art gallery; the opening show, up through July 10, features the work of Philly’s own A.I.D.S. (And It Don’t Stop) crew.

So anyone concerned that old-style street art was a thing of the past can rest assured …

The writing is definitely on the wall.

Rarebreed, 530 South 15th Street (215-280-5599 or rarebreed215.com).
Tags: phila, graffiti, art, street, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial
El Fuego has the best burritos in the city. They are indeed Cali-Mex, and is ironically either owned or at least staffed by a number of Argentineans (they hang Argentina flags and El Fuego was mobbed by Argies for their World Cup matches). All the burritos are $6.25 but I highly recommend the vegetarian burrito over the meat varieties since it comes with guac, which is otherwise an extra $1.75. The salsas are fresh and tasty, the guac is great, and the beans are well-prepared. Good tortillas...everything's well-prepared. As an added bonus, they have a large flat-screen TV on the wall that's almost always showing Fox Soccer Channel or GolTV.
Tags: phila, burritos, mexican, food, restaurants, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial
Run for the Border! (or the Bathroom)

Too salty. Too sweet. Waaaay too watered down.

For the love of Cinco de Mayo and fishbowl glasses everywhere, can somebody please make us a decent margarita?

Dave Frank and Stephen Simons, co-owners of South Philly comfort pub Royal Tavern, have the perfect solution. Or better yet, the perfect recipe.

With 32 types of primo tequila in house, including top-shelf anejos, the bartenders at the brand-new Cantina El Caballito have mastered the art of margarita making.

They’ve got traditional lime, of course, but we recommend putting on your party-girl hat and downing a prickly pear, strawberry, or pomegranate. Order a pitcher for your friends and sit on the outdoor patio among candles and punched tin lamps. If the buzz starts to catch you, order one of chef Miguel Aguilar’s (of Alma de Cuba fame) kicked-up tacos or signature entrees.

Eat. Drink. ¡Fiesta! (Forever!) Hungover!

Cantina El Caballito, 1651 East Passyunk Avenue (215-755-3550).
Tags: phila, margaritas, mexican, restaurant, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial
Glass Action

You’ve got lots of artistic talent. Too bad you can’t act on it.

Your watercolor self-portrait looked like Nancy Reagan in a party hat. One word: ouch. (Okay, another: ick.)

Time to jump-start the creative process with a class at Philadelphia Glass Works in Northern Liberties. The three-day Introduction to Lampworking course teaches the untrained (yet creatively inclined) basic glassblowing. The next session starts next week, so book soon.

You’ll learn how to use a torch to turn glass rods into decorative marbles. Should you discover a talent for the blowing arts, you can sign up for an intermediate class in the fall.

For advance inspiration, stop by the gallery Saturday: There’s a sale on all new artists’ work.

Because your browsing, appreciating, and shopping talents, on the other hand, are utterly unrivaled.

Philadelphia Glass Works, 908a North Third Street (215-627-3655 or phillyglassworks.com). Introduction to Lampworking starts August 8.
Tags: phila, classes, galleries, crafts, art, glass, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial

Philly Mini Golf

        (from City Paper)
August 10-16, 2006

Naked City
Philly, to a Tee

The giant challenges of creating a miniature, puttable Philadelphia.
by Carolyn Wyman

The documents and buildings relating to our country's founding are important. But they can be boring. Hence last year's creation of Once Upon a Nation, a year-old initiative of the nonprofit Historic Philadelphia, Inc., designed to make our city's history more relevant and fun. Once Upon a Nation deals primarily in tours and storytelling, but now they also do miniature golf. And what's more fun than miniature golf?

Open until 9 p.m., a new Philly-themed mini golf course, and its companion Franklin Square carousel and playgrounds, helps meet Once Upon a Nation's other goal of creating more things for tourists to do at night, when those boring buildings and museums are closed. Three years in the making, the 18-hole course includes interactive reproductions of the Love sculpture, Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the Chinese Friendship Gate. On the eve of Franklin Square kiddyland's opening we spoke with Ruth Rosenquist of Studio Productions in Tempe, Ariz., the company charged with transforming Philadelphia icons into playable pop art.
STONE FREE: There are no cobblestones in play on the Elfreth's Alley hole.
STONE FREE: There are no cobblestones in play on the Elfreth's Alley hole.
: Michael T. Regan

City Paper: How did you decide on these particular buildings and subjects? Were there things that didn't make the final cut?

Ruth Rosenquist: We designed the course with Castle Golf in Mesa [Ariz.] and Once Upon a Nation. A lot of ideas got thrown around and it was a group decision which ones to keep and which ones we weren't able to use. I know there was talk about the Franklin Institute's heart and a Philly food hole with a soft pretzel loop-de-loop. That would have definitely been a different style than the world-class, museum-quality realistic representations we're known for. But with most [of the cuts] it came down to budget and space and time.

CP: The Philadelphia sports hole is a par 3. Given our sports teams' records, wouldn't it have been more realistic to make that hole impossible to do in the 6-stroke limit?

RR: Since Philadelphia is home to the great underdog story of Rocky , the course designers felt a par 3 was warranted. There isalways reason for hope in the world of sports! CP: Why didn't you put the cobblestones in the putting area of the Elfreth's Alley hole as well as on the sides?

RR: We talked about it. But we were worried about people tripping and falling. We also worried about what it would do to wheelchair access. [The course is wheelchair accessible.]

CP: What are the most challenging holes?

RR: I think the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is a lot of fun and more interesting than the typical two- or three-part hole. There's only about an 8-inch height clearance on the bridge opening. If you don't make it you drop in the Delaware.

CP: Any insider tips?

RR: My colleagues at Castle Golf, the Arizona company that designed the play of the course, call the Ben Franklin Bridge hole a touch shot. The turf on the bridge is shorter, which makes the ball roll more easily than on the other turf surfaces. Be sure to hitthe ball with enough force to get it over the high point on the bridge's arch, or it will roll back, costing you a stroke.

CP: Which holes were the most challenging to design?

RR: The Museum of Art with the Rocky steps. The original design had the ball dropping down the stairs, which is the more typical way to deal with stairs in mini golf. There is a danger in putting up — the ball can become a boomerang. [But when Once Upon a Nation requested that the balls had to go up the stairs like Rocky] we were able to come up with a compromise that lowered the angle of the putt that didn't take too much away from the grandeur of the stairs.

CP: Do you think it's a good course?

RR: It's one of the most interesting courses I've ever seen. I love the way it blends the educational with the historical. I know a lot of players will be attracted by the bells and whistles — like how the Liberty Bell rings when you putt into it and the snippets of songs that play on the Sound of Philadelphia and Rocky holes. The water also adds excitement. [In the Benjamin Franklin Bridge hole, the Delaware River is a water hazard, but on the Boathouse Row hole putting into the Schuylkill River spillway is the best way to get to the hole.] I also think the nighttime lighting on Boathouse Row and the Ben Franklin Bridge is really neat.

CP: Are you embarrassed or proud to say you help make mini golf courses?

RR: Proud, absolutely. Especially with this project. It tapped the creative juices of our staff in a way that few other jobs have. To have this located right in the heart of the historic district the way it is, we feel like we're playing a part in the city's history.

Mexi-Cali burrito truck

        (from chowhound.com)

My favorite lunch truck in West Philly is Magic Carpet vegetarian truck at 34th and Walnut. Everything is good, particularly the magic meatballs, the vine leaf salad, the spinach pie, and the louisiana BBQ special.

I also like the falafel truck and the chinese truck behind the Pottruck gym. The orange sauce at the Chinese truck is great. Don't be intimidated by a line, they move very fast.

There's a great burrito truck (that isn't always there) at 38th and Walnut called Mexi-Cali. There are also a couple other Mexican trucks on Spruce between 36th and 37th.
Tags: phila, burritos, mexican, food, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial

Denise's Soul Food/Carribean Style lunch truck

        (from chowhound.com)
Woah - based on previous Chowhound recommendations, I just walked across Philly to try Denise's Soul Food/Carribean Style lunch truck and it was awesome. Location: Market and 30th just to the left of the train station (with your back to the Schuylkill). Had the "large" fried chicken for $8.50. Small was $2 less and unless you're feeding two people, I'd strongly recommend sticking with a small. Large was 2 entire thigh/legs and 2 heaping servings of sides. The chicken was piping hot, tender, with a crispy coating, covered with hot sauce (optional) comparable to tabasco in terms of flavor and bite. The crust had no extra salt, allowing the flavor of the chicken and the batter to shine through. The true test of perfect fried chicken -- the skin and coating were still crispy after the whole meal was done.

Sides: Tried the green beans which were fresh, hot, a bit salty but not overly so, and had a touch of onions I believe. Yum. Also had the candied yams -- perfectly soft but not mushy, sweet but not too much so. Overall - sides were done right.

The chicken was the highlight of the meal though and this was the best fried chicken (if not best chicken period) I've had in recent memory, and that includes several trips from San Francisco to the East Coast passing through the Deep South, so take that! Denises' will do ya right! Almost forgot to mention -- I didn't order it, but for $2 you get 32oz of homemade ice-tea in a plastic tub. Other menu items include fried fish, jerk chicken, and a variety of sides, but they'll all have to wait because I'm still full from the chicken.

Other: No atmosphere to speak of, but remember this is a lunch truck. Take your meal into the beautiful 30th street train station and grab a seat.
Tags: phila, food, philadelphia, soul food, philly, carribean

Map this on Platial
This is the Commerce Bank, one of the many banks lining Germantown Avenue. On the one hand, it's bright. Damn bright. A lot of people don't like that, but it's hard for me to see bright light along the Avenue at night as anything but a good thing. And at least this building does not look nearly as nightmarish as Commerce Bank's many other outlets that draw heavily on the "funhaus" school of art and architecture. Still, with the huge windows and the oversized, tacky graphics, this building seems determined not to blend in. Not the worst thing that could have happened, but surely not the best.
Tags: philadelphia, chestnut hill, blog on the hill, germantown avenue, commerce bank

Map this on Platial
Big Tees

Cute T-shirts and good beer: They’ve got a lot in common. They make tough days easier, go great with most foods, and you can always use another.

Artist Julie Goldstein understands your thirst for just the right tee — and is doing her best to satisfy it with her appropriately named line, Perfect.

Since the versatile and wearable shirts and tanks feature one-of-a-kind prints, no small amount of work goes into each one. Goldstein spends anywhere from eight hours to two weeks creating an original woodcut, which is then used to apply the print — either to the individual top or a patch that is later sewn on. The images come directly from her own observations, personal memories, and portrayals of female strength and independence.

So not only are her shirts wearable, they actually mean something.

All the more reason to order up another round.

The Shiatsu Studio

There’s the Rub

You’ve got a permanent crick in your shoulder, a chronically seized up lower back, and zero ability to turn your head to the left.

Sure, things could get worse. Buy why wait till then to call Debi Phillpotts, shiatsu master?

The petite stylist/massage therapist works out of a small studio above the Rocket Cat Cafe, and she can free you from that prison of body aches and pain. She practices five-element shiatsu, focusing on acupressure and breathing, which will restore a full range of motion to your 2,000 parts by freeing trapped energy that causes pain.

After your session, you’ll feel like a bowl of jelly. And without all the ache, you’ll find moving around to be a far less harrowing experience.

For one thing, you’ll be able to look both ways before crossing the street.

The Shiatsu Studio, 2001 Frankford Avenue, enter through Rocket Cat Cafe (215-668-4076).
Tags: phila, spa, massage, philadelphia, philly, shiatsu

Map this on Platial

Bar Ferdinand

Take Me Out

Ferdinands in History:

Archduke Ferdinand: Gets assassinated. Starts war.

Franz Ferdinand: Skinny ties and disco punk.

Now? A third Ferdinand rolls onto the scene.

Fashion designer-turned-interior decorator Owen Kamihira’s first solo culinary venture, Bar Ferdinand, is a NoLibs tapas restaurant and wine bar modeled in the spirit of old-world Espana.

Blake Joffe (Alma de Cuba, El Vez) is in the kitchen; Philly artist Joe Brenman’s mosaics of famous matadors and pastoral Spain line the walls. Even the vaulted ceiling — painted gold with a candlelit chandelier — is a throwback to Moorish times.

Plates, which range in price from $3 to $9, include crab-and-white-asparagus flan; charred watermelon with Serrano ham and tarragon; and smoked trout with potato, chives, piquillo peppers, and shallots.

Showin’ love for cash-poor party animals: The place is open seven days til 2 a.m. and offers $2 wine-of-the-week specials and $1 draft beer, including Alhambra, a Spanish lager exclusive to Ferdie’s.

Now that’s one for the history books.

Super Bowl

Potbellies, back hair, New Jersey.

Just a few things that come to mind when one thinks of bowling. Oh, and that scene from Kingpin, when Bill Murray’s comb-over is flyin’ all wild as he runs down the lane.

Well, you’d better readjust your perceptions, because bowling just got all classed up. No more beer-swilling dirty old men and no more rival high school gangs smoking reefer in the parking lot — not, at least, at Lucky Strike, the famed L.A. bowling lounge making its Philly debut.

With two stories, 24 lanes, six pool tables, a sports bar, and the city’s largest roof deck (come fall), the place is downright swanky. And forget about corn dogs; Lucky Strike’s bistro menu includes grilled tomato, basil and mozzarella sandwiches, and a turkey club with applewood-smoked bacon, avocado, and a fried egg.

We doubt you’ll miss the lanes of yore one bit.

Unless, that is, you have a thing for comb-overs.

Philly Roller Girls, Millennium Skate World

Roll Out

Remember Xanadu? The movie in which Olivia Newton-John inspires Gene Kelly and some dude to build a roller disco where everyone’s dreams come true?

That was totally based on a true story.

Okay, maybe not. But fast-forward to this Sunday night, and some roller-rink wishes just might become reality. That’s when the spanking-new members of the Heavy Metal Hookers take on the Philthy Britches in the ongoing battle of the Philly Roller Girls.

The league of all-girl roller derbyists was born of whatever bizarre ideas the ’80s bequeathed us about fantasy and roller skating — and it’s pure badass entertainment.

After a musical opening act, the girls put on their skates, tackle each other, throw elbows, and stem bleeding noses. And they look totally sexy doing so, especially in the military-inspired uniforms Liz Truong designed for the Britches.

Some audience involvement is involved, but don’t worry: There’s only a slight chance it’ll include dodging a machete.

So get out there. This is a place where time stops, the magic never ends, and it’s all in good fun.

At least until someone loses an eye.

Sole Mate

Shoes are like lovers.

You spend so much time breaking them in, molding them to your needs, then one day you wake up and realize they’re no longer what you fell in love with.

Don’t chuck them just yet. All they need is a good repurposing.

In about one week, Yahya at Distinguished Fabrics, a favorite tailor and fabric merchandiser of the Philly elite, can replace the upper of a dated leather shoe for a whole new look. Go for a custom tweed, textured fabric, or Gucci logo — whatever suits your style.

For much less than it would cost you and your bunions to break in a new pair, you’ll have something that feels comfortably familiar yet refreshingly new.

Talk about a match made in heaven.

Distinguished Fabrics, 770/772 South 4th Street (215-627-6380).
Tags: phila, shoes, philadelphia, alterations, philly

Map this on Platial
If These Thighs Could Talk

Waist (to Hips): Are you comfortable? Cause I’m swimmin’.

Hips: Hell, no! We’re choking in here!

Thighs (to all): Quit your bitching. We lost circulation an hour ago.

And so the struggle for a great-fitting pair of jeans continues. Thank heavens, then, for Larnell Baldwin, of Baldwin’s Leather and Fabrics. He’ll make those jeans fit like a glove as he alters yokes, inseams, waistbands, and hems. He’ll take those Sass & Bides, J Brands, or Levi’s and transform them into jeans you can live — and even breathe — in. And it’ll cost you only $40, max.

So wearing your favorite pair of jeans no longer has to give your body the blues …

Literally and figuratively speaking.

Mexican food trucks

Tags: phila, mexican, food, philadelphia, philly

Map this on Platial
What’s Your Damage?

You’ve been known to play Agent Provocateur. And you can definitely keep Victoria’s Secrets.

So you’ll want to make room in your underwear drawer for something from burlesque queen Kiki Berlin’s Damaged Goods Pin-Up Emporium.

The tiny shop-within-a-shop specializes in vintage and retro lingerie — everything from garters and girdles to bustiers and stockings. Not your average granny panties, the steamy styles are as classic as the grand dames that inspired them: Marilyn, Rita, and, of course, Betty.

Would-be calendar girls can purchase bullet bras for under work clothes, but if you’re terrified of the Twin Peaks look, Kiki also sells old stag mags, pinup art, jewelry, scarves, go-go boots, and opera gloves.

But honestly, it’s probably best if you just let go of your inhibitions.

Especially if you ever plan to party in Hollywood with Frederick.

It was once one of the mainstays of Chestnut Hill, a cool little neighborhood restaurant in SOHA (south of Hartwell Lane). The building looks to have been substantially rehabbed--a beautiful job. Still, it has been vacant for about 10 years.
Tags: philadelphia, chestnut hill, soha, blog on the hill, germantown avenue, blue moon

Map this on Platial

Wachovia Center

The Wachovia Center (formerly known as the CoreStates Center and the First Union Center) is an indoor arena located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is the home arena of the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. The arena was completed in 1996 on what was once the site of John F. Kennedy Stadium at a cost of $206 million, largely privately financed (though the city and state helped to pay for the local infrastructure). The building lies at the southeast corner of the South Philadelphia sports complex, which includes Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, and the arena's predecessor, The Spectrum.
Tags: events, reviews, philadelphia, wachovia center, 76ers

Map this on Platial
