Professor Eastin will talk about why the global economy has made
education more important than ever before, even as many policymakers
seem ignorant of just how stale our educational approach has become.
In a world where information is doubling every two years, children
must learn to think critically, to analyze, to work in groups, to find
defects and to communicate across borders and language barriers. The
failure of American to fully commit to the education of all of our
children from preschool through grad school is not only unfortunate,
it is dangerous.
Who will carry the democratic values we hold dear into the future?
Historically, America has been a beacon of democracy but can it
continue to do so when it fails to challenge all of its children to
adequately master the full panoply of academic subjects that our
competitor nations are providing to their children? Why aren't all
children being steeped in the sciences and in the arts? Why are we
failing to provide healthy lunches and physical education, up-to-date
technology and multiple languages? Why are we making college harder to
get into and more expensive to attend, even as the countries of Asia
and Europe, copying an American model, are making higher education
more accessible to more students?
Silicon Valley has been a haven for progressive education. It can and
should be more of a role model to surrounding areas to encourage
them to enliven their educational offerings.

The Children's Health Council (CHC) has a rich history of serving our community's children and their families. CHC provides assessment and treatment services in multiple disciplines, including psychiatry, psychology, neuropsychology, social work, education, behavior management, family therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and art therapy. Our goal is to help children reach their maximum potential by building on their strengths and teaching them strategies to overcome their challenges. CHC's multidisciplinary approach and areas of expertise- children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; preschool, school-aged and adolescent group therapy; children with complex medical problems; and developmental and behavioral assessment of infants through school-aged children - make it unique among care providers in the Bay Area.
CHC provides services through four divisions: an Outpatient Clinic, the Esther B. Clark School, Educational Services and Outcomes Measurement and Research. The initial entry into the Outpatient Clinic is the information and referral service. Expert staff responded to more than 4,500 calls this past year from parents and caregivers, offering them encouragement, referrals to other community resources or information about help available at CHC. I've seen a surprising amount of wildlife here, considering how close it is to civilization: deer, owl, tarantula, hawks, some weird little black mole/vole creatures, and 1 guy fishing in the lake, with one of those weird floating wader-things on (like waders but with an inner- tube built in, around chest-height).

We are proud of the fact that our facilities are conveniently placed on 8 acres in the heart of Palo Alto close to Stanford University. Our building offers 50,000 square feet of facilities for the benefit of our members and their guests. Elks members from other lodges are welcome to enjoy our facilities. We have over 900 members ranging in age from 24 to 85 who live in Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Many of our members are civic and business leaders who have long traditions of volunteering their time to improve their communities.
Through our charitable activities, we raise money for the benefit of many local charities as well as for our State and National Elks Charities.

Do you have a young child ages 12-24 months? Are you nervous about sending them to preschool? Perhaps you are searching for a community to connect with or looking for a playgroup that is educational and fun in a Jewish environment? T'enna Tots at the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center (ALSJCC) in Palo Alto is the place for you! Our two classes include:
Yad B' Yad-- Parallel Play and Parent Education on Mondays from 9:15 - 10:45 a.m. This class is a fun and exciting exploration of self through a variety of hands-on movement, music and art. Participate with your child in activities that are designed to increase developmentally appropriate skills and learn about Jewish holidays and celebrations!
Yad La Shabbat on Fridays from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. This playgroup environment focuses on the Jewish Sabbath, Shabbat. The sessions will feature songs as well as art projects and other fun activities. The highlight of the class is a candle lighting that includes grape juice and yummy challah!

The Stanford Quads square dance club will be offering a beginners class in Palo Alto starting in October. The instructor will be
internationally-known John Sybalsky. The classes will be held Sunday evenings 7-9pm at Fairmeadow School, 500 East Meadow.
Introductory sessions are free on October 22nd and 29th -- come
to one or both of them with no obligation.
No previous dance experience or special clothing required -- just wear comfortable shoes.
Couples, singles, teens, families welcome -- you do not need to come
with a partner.
Modern square dancing is an activity that exercises both the body and the mind. From its roots in traditional American square dance, it has become an activity enjoyed by thousands of people not only in this country but in Europe and Asia as well.
