What's to say? Bodies - beautiful or not - are the ultimate landscape. For painters and photographers, sculptors and cinematographers. And for us others. Here are real models, paid to sit still; friends asked to overcome inhibitions; and me - and the painter, seeing in her mind's eye the hot bodies and the shapes they make together.

Paintings like these have their own truth - an accuracy that cameras can't always capture. Elements are simplified, or removed, for the sake of the composition. To the painter, it's only the painting that matters. The bar may never have looked like this: it certainly doesn't now.
We have walked and kayaked around all the 'Carbery's 100 Isles' of Roaringwater Bay, and camped out on many: in good weather it's the most beautiful place on earth.

www.maryhorganpaintings.com
Tags: bar, art, artist, paintings, painting, ireland, landscapes, west cork, sherkin

Map this on Platial
Named for the neighborhood in which it is located, this brewery opened as part of the rejuvenated Kennedy school in 1997. It is housed in the former little girls' room of the old school, and features artwork depicting the history of beer making as well s the antics of school girls. On the fermentation tanks are portrayed some of Kennedy School's no-nonsense principals. Old Schoolhouse Pale Ale debuted in 1997 in honor of the reopening of this neighborhood landmark.
Tags: mcmenamins, school, art, bathroom, paintings, beer, brewery, microbrew, drink, pub, gentrification, kennedy, tanks, rejuvenation

Map this on Platial

Hillsdale Brewery

Oregon's first brewpub since Prohibition days, the Hillsdale's inaugural brew was made in October 1985. The initial brewers crafted McMenamins' first unfiltered wheat ales and the first fruit ales (starting with blackberries scavenged from the vines off the parking lot). The Hillsdale is also notable for staging in the mid-1980s what likely was the first microbrew festival in Oregon. Today, the Hillsdale Brewfest, held every February, is considered the Grandaddy of all McMenamins brew fests. Another first at the Hillsdale was Alex Farnum, who was certainly the first female brewer to work for McMenamins and may well have been the first female brewer in Oregon.
Tags: mcmenamins, kennedy, school, art, bathroom, paintings, tanks, beer, brewery, microbrew, drink, pub, rejuvenation, gentrification, female brewer, alex farnum, brewfest, fruit ale

Map this on Platial

From Dun Chonchuir

A plein air painting near the ancient fort, Dun Chonchuir - looking north over the limestone 'pavements' of Inishmaan. There is very little actual earth on the island : the fields are stone enclosures, filled with sand, seaweed and manure to make soil for potato beds.

We have climbed here twice this year - at 8000 ft. with only 2/3rds oxygen, it's at the limit of what we can manage in a day. The second time up was to gather more information. For the paintings.
Here is nothing but shattered rock: no glacier has smoothed over the jagged edges. It's a boulder factory - nothing is liftable. Expertly-clad europeans stride past slabs of dirty summer ice, in a hurry to strip and plunge in the near-zero water. An old man in old shoes swings a plastic gallon of it, to his village below.

www.maryhorganpaintings.com

Residential painting weeks : www.artholiday.com
Tags: andorra, mountain, rock, landscape, art, artist, paintings, painting, coma pedrosa

Map this on Platial

Brand X: Antiques/Estate Jewelry/Objets d'Art

Of all the intricate and surprising shops in San Francisco, Brand X is most certainly Queen. Shopping here puts me in mind of a reverse "Needful Things" by Steven King: Happily this one offers up needful things that bring only good fortune.

Fred Kirkbride and Tim Flint have created a wonderfully cluttered and darling little space for discovering treasures you never even knew you absolutely had to have in your collection.

For me, a leisurely Sunday in the City includes hooking up with friends for fruity drinkies at Cafe Luna Piena followed by knocking a couple upcoming birthday and wedding gifts off my list at Brand X. Anyone who is into antique jewels and special whimsical delights for the home would be thrilled to receive just about any delicacy Fred and Tim might offer up.

Fine antique jewelry, costume jewelry, paintings, art, erotic art, glassware, totchkes, miniatures, smoking memorabilia, a real mish-mash that could take hours to explore must be taken in quickly because you're on sort of a one-horse track and there's always someone shuffling close behind you. If you reallllllly like something, you'll probably have to go 'round the track a few times to get a good look, so remember which case it was in!

Secret Erotic Cache: If you're over 18, be sure to keep an eye out for blonde Elvis!

Miranda Caroligne – A Living Construction Boutique

Shhhhh! Miranda at work in her boutique.
________________________
Miranda Caroligne is like a fairy's closet. A good fairy, one who would save Cinderella's neck with a last-minute ballgown, but it would be a ballgown that made a unique statement about wearable waste in addition to making a statement about the wearer.

Filled with magical goodies, this store compels visitors to choose a talisman for their next journey and maybe a lucky hand-felted hat for a lover's birthday.

In addition to representing Miranda C. Burns' work, Miranda Caroligne offers many area designers' one-of-a-kind pieces, original artwork, and jewelry.

If one-of-a-kind neo-archaic creations make you shiver with delight you'd better meditate for a few days before entering. Miranda will design a special piece for and with you; if you're trying to figure out how the hell your mother's beloved wedding dress can be reconstructed to fit into your commitment ceremony you should schedule a visit.

I found a most delightful curiousity whilst I was visiting with Miranda and urge you to do the same. Seek out the enchanting creatures therein before they amble away. If you ask nicely you might even get to peep at their accompanying storybooks.

"...biomechanical forms that arise from her public studio often compel the wearer to dance, play and behave fantastically."

Minerve paintings

Not based on sketches or photos, these might be called imagined landscapes - or dreamscapes - of the mediaeval village of Minerve, built precariously on a buttress of rock at the confluence of two rivers in the foothills of the Montagnes Noires.
One of the many 'last stands' of the Cathars - a simple, breakaway cult that wanted nothing to do with the increasing pomp and worldliness of the Catholic religion - Minerve, in 1210, was starved and then bombed with slingshot into submission: only to be burnt - man, woman and child - at the stake. Another result for the evil Simon de Monfort.

www.maryhorganpaintings.com
Residential painting weeks : www.artholiday.com
Tags: art, artist, painting, france, languedoc, sketches, paintings, landscapes, minerve, dreamscapes

Map this on Platial
A plein air painting in winter.
The place-name derives from 'aulmes' or elms, and is pronounced 'omps'. It's a pretty port on the 240 km - long canal, busy with big plastic bumper-boats for hire, sunburnt northerners in canal-side restaurants, and the rare wood or steel barge: water-gypsies leading an enviable unconnected life.
In winter there is little traffic to disturb the grey-green water.
www.maryhorganpaintings.com

Residential painting weeks : www.artholiday.com
Tags: plein air, art, artist, painter, paintings, painting, france, languedoc, canal du midi, homps

Map this on Platial
