Lunar Stages 10/12/06

        FREE outdoor performance and movie

Four evenings of performance and film under the autumn moon. Whether
used in giving thanks for a bountiful harvest, ensuring safe passage,
conveying mythic tales or simple enjoyment, performing arts have been
a major part of Chinese civilization and daily life for thousands of
years. Lunar Stages celebrates this tradition with four unique
evenings of live Chinese theatrical and musical performances,
followed by thematically related Chinese and American films. Tonight:
Gaijin a Go-Go's Asian retro pop and Charlie's Angels.

Eaton Canyon Natural Area

Eaton Canyon lies nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, very close to Los Angeles and Pasadena. There are bicycle and foot trails, as well as a nature center that coordinates outdoor planned activities. I love the dioramas in the nature center.

There's a beautiful waterfall that feeds a stream that winds its way through the park. Lot's of folks take their very happy dogs there and you'll see a lot of families out enjoying the more moderate trails.

Bommer Canyon

You can swoon over the moon and take in the view of the city lights.

Residents are invited to pitch a tent in Bommer Canyon on Saturday and Sunday.

Twice a year, the city’s Open Space Land Preserve offers family campout weekends at the old Irvine Ranch Cattle Camp in the heart of Bommer Canyon.

On Saturday and Sunday, Irvine residents may spend quality time with family and friends in a rustic setting, almost as close as their own backyard. Bommer Canyon is located off Shady Canyon, and is adjacent to the Turtle Rock Community Park and Nature Center. It’s an important preservation area for many local plants and wildlife, including several endangered species.

Equipped with a volleyball court, horseshoe pit and fire ring, Bommer Canyon provides a picturesque surrounding for family outings. According to Amy Litton, senior naturalist and lead staff/coordinator for the holiday campouts, it’s a great time to be had by all.

“We offer campers a safe, supervised experience close to home. Campers are invited to use the group barbecue (charcoal provided), participate in evening and morning hikes, create a craft, enjoy an Open Space slide show, and make S’mores by the campfire while singing campfire songs,” Litton said.

And if campers don’t want to do any of the above, they may sit back and listen to the birds or play horseshoes or volleyball.

Families may begin pitching their tents at 3 p.m. Saturday for an overnight adventure, complete with campfire songs and stories, docent-led nature walks, and a slideshow featuring native wildlife, plants and history of the camp.

For more info, call (949) 724-6738.
Tags: bommer canyon, irvine, turtle ridge, camping, outdoor, nature, lets go outside, moon, city lights

Map this on Platial
This year's theme: Men and Beasts
Tags: outdoor, movies, film, cinema, gratuit, free, plein air, pelouse, gazon, lawn, crowds, la foule, picnic, pique nique

Map this on Platial

At the circle turn left, the cemetery will be on your right. Turn right onto Vestal st. there will be a path to the cemetery.

Comments: There are no real hazards, except in the far NW corner, where there are some old stones. Popular with the young crowd
Tags: sledding, fun, kids, whoosh, family, outdoor, free, activity

Map this on Platial

Hazon

The word hazon is Hebrew for "vision."

Our vision is of a renewed Jewish community: one that is rooted in Jewish tradition, engaged with the world around us, radically inclusive, passionate and creative.

Our vision is of a community that fosters people's journeys, that engenders compassion among its members, and that recognizes that there are shivim panim l'torah - seventy ways to understand the Torah.

Our vision is of a community in which people's lives are enriched through engagement and challenge: engagement across difference, with those of different ages or backgrounds or beliefs, and challenge, both physical and intellectual, a mechanism for learning, growing and acting.

Our vision is of a community that engages vitally with the world in which we live, and in doing so achieves two things: the renewal of Jewish life itself, and the addition of a further chapter in the distinctive contribution that Jewish people have made to the world for three thousand years.

Our vision is of a community that seeks in myriad ways to learn and ultimately to live Hazon's theme-quote:

"the Torah is a commentary on the world,
and the world is a commentary on the Torah..."

It's worth the rummage. My friend Angie loves to go there and managed to drag me along once or twice. You'll find things like refurbished armoires, buffets and dressers, and cool smaller items like jars, mirrors, trays, vintage accessories, postcards and pottery.

It is held the first Sunday of each month from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Irvine Valley College, 5500 Irvine Center Dr. Admission and parking are free.

Normandy Park Playground

        Location:
2484 East County Road F
White Bear Lake, MN 55110

A beautiful little park in White Bear Lake designed specifically for kids 1-5 years of age. Affiliated with Normandy Park Education Center so during school hours accessibility is hit or miss, but it is a perfect place for fun on evenings and weekends as well as non-school days. It is fenced in and has a well-padded play surface with lots of climbing equipment. It is located on the corner of Bellaire Avenue and County Rd F on the East side of White Bear Lake.

The only negatives here are that the trees are new, and there is very little shade, but that's not unusual. There are some picnic tables by the school, so picnics are possible, but they are outside the gated park.

Holy Jim Trail

The road from hell leads to a heaven-like waterfall.

By BRIAN QUINES
SqueezeOC.com

Distance: 2.8 miles

Time: 1.5 hours

Difficulty: Easy hike at the beginning. Progressively becomes difficult with low tree canopies and multiple stream crossings via stepping stones and large branches traversing the water. Be prepared, also, to climb over roots and large rocks.

Caution: The canyon is a thriving habitat that includes mountain lions, snakes and patches of poison oak. Long pants are suggested.

Trailhead: At the end of Trabuco Creek Road, 4.7 miles east of Live Oak Canyon Road in Trabuco Canyon.

$5 Adventurer’s Pass for parking available at the trailhead.

Note: Trabuco Creek Road is a very rough dirt path resembling uncharted moon territory more than a road. Large rocks, potholes and washboard-like dips are common.

Why we like it: Short hike with a moderate grade through a lush canyon to Holy Jim Falls, a secluded, 17-foot waterfall.

Details: The adventure begins as you turn off Live Oak Canyon Road onto Trabuco Creek Road, which doesn’t receive much maintenance. The 4.7 miles to the trailhead may be the longest and bumpiest drive you’ve experienced.

The road is barely driveable in a small car or other low-lying vehicles; you’ll have to drive very slow. I recommend using a lunar rover for this stretch of road, but an off-road truck or SUV will suffice.

The 4-wheel adventure ends at a parking lot on your left. Park here and obtain an Adventurer’s Pass at the kiosk.

Proceed north on foot up a small hill and into the canyon, where small cabins appear. These cabins sprouted in the late 1800s when beekeepers made a living here.

One of the beekeepers was James T. Smith, who had a nasty swearing habit. He earned the name "Cussin’ Jim" until government cartographers renamed him "Holy Jim" – the name of the canyon today.

You’ll come to a steel gate after .5 miles. The vegetation quickly thickens as you trek deeper into the canyon.

There are seven stream crossings in the next mile; some are very easy to traverse while others are difficult thanks to large boulders, overhanging tree limbs or loose stepping stones.

Natural canopies create tunnels along the way and the steep canyon walls and trees provide shade.

Follow the sign toward the falls when you meet the Holy Jim Trail after the last stream crossing. The falls await you about 400 yards away.

This is probably the trickiest part of the hike: trekking very close to the creek bed in the canyon, which is now significantly narrower.

You can hear Holy Jim Falls just ahead, with water falling into the small pond below. It’s no Niagara Falls, but the tranquility of this hideaway with its riparian habitat enclosed by towering canyon walls is certainly special.

Eat a sandwich or take a quick dunk in the chilly pond before heading back.

Also consider a car wash after driving out of the canyon. Your vehicle will be filthy!
Tags: holy jim trail, waterfall, trek, hiking, trail, outdoor, nature

Map this on Platial

✓ Boredoms concert with Birgit and Sam July 7, 2007, 4pm

        Update:
I went to this, but the line was so slow and long that I didn't want to wait in it with Vigo, so I took him down to the river to get ice cream. I missed my opprtunity to get in with Erik and Birgit and Sam, and took Vigo for a long walk down to the beach at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. The pool was closed due to infant feces (gross) but we had a nice time hanging out on the sand. When we came back, the show was still going on so we listened outside for a while and then went to get some sushi and wait for the rest of our gang.

I think Vigo would have enjoyed the show and I'm disappointed that I missed it.

Forest Park and the Witches Castle

Staff Picks: Favorite Place to be Outdoors
"Forest Park is the largest urban forest in the U.S. It's like the forest moon of Endor. But my favorite part is the "Witches Castle," a ruined stone building along the trail. It's a stone restroom from the '30s that was damaged in a storm in the 60s. It's absolutely gorgeous." - Brandon

Forest Park stretches for more than eight miles, and the walking path in it is a 40 mile loop. The #15 bus from Belmont will drop you off near the Lower Macleay Park entrance, where these photos were taken.

To get to the Witches Castle (also called the Stone House), walk the Lower Macleay Park trail for 20 minutes. The "Castle" is on your left, at a juncture with another trail.
Tags: parks, outdoor, staff picks, northwest

Map this on Platial
