Oakland, CA -- Diamano Coura West African Dance Company, Oakland’s oldest resident African dance company presents “JUSAT – Past, Present, and Future”
on Saturday, November 25 and 26 at the Malonga Casquelourd Center Theater at 1428 Alice Street in downtown Oakland. JUSAT brings together the work of internationally renowned musicians and choreographers from Liberia and Senegal, along with 20 professional musicians, dancers, and folklorists. In this spell bounding and energetic performance that combines live music, dance, and theater, the audience learns of Africa’s golden past and the elders who are spiritual guides; the impact of slavery and colonization on its people; and how this has served as an integral part in shaping the culture and politics of the future Africa.
Diamano Coura West African Dance Company (Senegalese for those who bring the message) is a nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1975 by Dr. Zak Diouf and Naomi Gedo Diouf, Artistic Director, choreographer and performer. The organization is dedicated to the preservation, education and appreciation of traditional West African music, dance, theater, and culture. Diamano Coura’s aim is to combine rhythmic and movement dynamism and transport audiences into an understanding and appreciation of Africa’s epic and folkloric culture.

# All will-call tickets are at the Yoshi's box office. If you get here before the doors open, pick up your tickets from the box office prior to jumping in line. If you get here after the doors open, simply pick up your tickets from the box office and go directly into the jazz house. If you are having dinner and attending a 10:00pm show, pick up your tickets from the box office before sitting down for dinner. When you sit down, show your 10:00pm show tickets to your server and they will reserve seats for you in the jazz house. As a dinner patron, there is no rush to finish your meal because your seats are already reserved. Before the show starts, go into the club, tell the door staff your last name and they will show you to your seats.
# Yoshi's does not have a specific dress code. Most patrons usually wear casual attire.
# Within the jazz house, sushi, appetizers, salads and desserts are available in addition to a full cocktail menu.
# Yoshi's asks for a one drink minimum in the jazz house.
