Join Revels and the Charles River Conservancy for a free community sing celebrating the first day of fall! From atop the Weeks Bridge linking Boston and Cambridge, and bathed in light, on Sunday, September 23rd, Revels music director George Emlen (and giant puppets Oshun and Poseidon) will lead everyone gathered along the banks of the Charles in river songs and songs of the season. The 4th annual RiverSing will be a festive musical affair. Joining us on the bridge this year will be members of be Nick Page’s Mystic Chorale, Revels Circle of Song, the Halalisa Singers and other Boston area choruses, all accompanied by keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. In addition, local saxophone greats Stan Strickland, fresh off his award-winning one-man show, and Ken Field of The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, will play antiphonally across the Charles with a third sax, played by Chris O’Brien, joining in as well. The public is invited bring a bell to ring in the new season (we’ll ring our 40-pound River Bell) and join the many singers, musicians and friends of the parklands in this exciting fall tradition that literally links Boston and Cambridge in song! Picnics are encouraged! Come early and spread your blanket on the grass or meet us at Winthrop Park in Harvard Square at 5:00 pm where select area restaurants will be handing out pre-ordered picnic meals. Then join us for a 5:45 pm processional down to the Charles led by larger-than-life puppets created by the Puppet Collaborative, and local jazz legends the New Orleans-style Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band.

Lawrence University - My Alma Mater

Once again I'm biased, since I graduated from here in 2004, but Lawrence University is a fantastic undergraduate liberal arts school. I have never regretted choosing to attend here. The university is divided between the college and the music conservatory. While all the students mingle, the "connies" are known for being singularly focused on their music studies. Students also tend to have a quirky side, which we jokingly referred to as "the Lawrence Difference" (which is printed on the school's literature). An example of this is the annual student-run Midwest Trivia Contest, broadcast every year on Wisconsin Public Radio for a weekend in January. Off-campus teams are welcome to join and teams come from all over the Midwest and beyond. Lawrence hosts a wide range of artistic and cultural events throughout the year, many of which are open to the public. These include full-scale operas and musicals, dramas, musical concerts and student recitals. Lawrence also hosts an annual Jazz Festival with a range of world-renowned jazz artists, and a convocation series which brings in a variety of experts to share their expertise, including people such as Fareed Zakaria, Lech Walsea, and Frank McCourt. Wander the beautiful collegiate campus, especially in the fall when the Main Hall Green is awash in brilliant reds and golds.

Since 1938, The Cambridge Center has consistently offered the most diverse menu of courses to adults in Cambridge and surrounding areas. * We are a non-profit. * We are self-supporting, relying on tuition income and contributions. * We are here to give people the opportunity to explore their interests and nurture their talents and potential. First incorporated as the Cambridge Social Union in April 1876, then in 1938, we officially became the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. In 1889 the Social Union purchased and moved into the House of William Brattle at 42 Brattle Street, which was built in 1727. In late 1972 the Cambridge Center acquired the Blacksmith House (the former Window Shop) property. Blacksmith House includes the Dexter Pratt House, built in 1811, where Longfellow observed the famous Village Blacksmith at work under the Spreading Chestnut Tree in 1839. Both houses are being preserved by the Center as living museums and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Victoria's Waterfront - Free Nightlife!

The best show in town is free! Cliche, but available on Victoria's waterfront and along Government street. We strolled the harbor and listened to a variety of street performers, from folk to country to reggae to the just plain wierd. We also came across a Caribbean percussion group that drew such a crowd, people spilled into the street dancing. With so much to experience in the streets, we never even set foot in a pub!

Every year hear there is a city wide music festival and it's for free. I was lucky enough to be close by in 2006. I saw Pennywise along with many other bands. They have a stage for literally every type of music. There is also hundreds of booths for food, arts and crafts. I recommend stopping by if you are in the area. It's recommended that you buy beer from Copenhagen though, Sweden has a cap on their alcohol percentage.

The Columbarium, with its many mosaic tiled fountains, rounds of gardened greenery and sandy stonework arches, is arguably one of the most serene and lovely places in the Bay Area to wander alone.
