Hag Schwag for the Brutally Glamourous

Jewelry. Art. Clothes. Local designers and artists. The best way to dispose of your income!

I usually shy away from clothing with skulls and kitties, it's just not my style. But I was inexplicably drawn to Susie's skeleton hoodie. I like when design is carried through on both front and back--and lovingly detailed.

I love a good pun, too. Oh, the possibilities!
rockin' seams, rock in seams, rock inseams, rocking inseams...

Find some of their stuff at Wasteland and look for Denise, Sabrina, and Marie to be hawkin' their tempting wares at street festivals!

Jennifer works her magic!
__________________

I saw some of Jennifer Lynne's pieces at a recent Luggage Store trunk show and was excited to visit her Mission store. What a fun collection! From the sassy green frock featured in the center of the store (photo at right) to autumn-hued trousers and delicately designed tanks (also shown at right),and bouncing over to the bouyant wine bottle cork halter top, Jennifer has a delightful way of redefining everyday fashion sense.

My visit found Jennifer busily at work creating a surplice wrap sweater dress. If you catch her at a slow time, she'll tailor her designs for you on the spot!

Porcelynne opened in February of 2006 and Jennifer, who attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and gave up the business for a couple years before committing to her design work, has recently left her day job to focus on her creations full-time.

If you are in the mood for a wardrobe update and want to support a local designer while looking different-than-most, here's your place. Porcelynne also features the work of many local designers including Amy M. Cool's highly touchable recycled fabric handbags and jewelry by 19 Moons and Tessa Poppe. I'm going to have to go back for the earrings created with Lite-Brites (photo at right).

The most intriguing of Porcelynne's offerings is the "Panty-A-Month" club. You'll get a new pair of stinkies designed by Jennifer every month--imagine how fun it could be to get this monthly offering from a lover in the subsequent months after breaking up--the turmoil the poor chump would go through knowing that you'll be wearing the panties he bought you--he bought YOU--with your new lover. Oh, the possibilities!

Art work in the gallery rotates; the current show features work created on heat-sensitive fax paper with a soldering iron (shown at right). Check out Porcelynne's website for gallery show information.
Tags: porcelynne, porcelynne boutique and gallery, 14th street, jennifer lynne, panty of the month club, fashion, jewelry, clothing, handmade, local, diy, mission, recycled, california, san francisco, lingerie, reconstructed, designers

Map this on Platial

The Other Shop: 20th Century Design

Manager Cindy McMullen always provides a warm welcome!
_____________________
A favorite browsing spot on the way to Comic Experience, The Other Shop is like your clean and neat Uncle Buck's basement. His stash of old Playboy mags would be filed by the Centerfold's hair color; his rabbit foot keychain collection sorted by size and color and hung neatly with cleverly managed hook-and-eyes.

During this visit, I fell in love with locally designed handmade pillows and funny stuffed animals made of patterned vintage fabrics and scored a ring I suspect was made by a designer I've always admired (I have to remember to look into that!) and a terrific vintage dress in a great print with swell buttons and a soft sateen finish for only $30. I now wish I'd bought the faceted black pearl necklace for $70, but at the time figured I'd leave a bargain for the next Betty. Right now everything is 20% off (a bi-annual sale) so I was even more delighted with my finds (Dammit, I really should have have bought that pearl necklace for my niece's graduation gift).

Cindy McMullen manages this collective of 14 dealers who each work in the store two days a month and take turns designing window displays. If you're a dealer or designer interested in renting a space, give Cindy a call at 415.621.5424.

FairFax Flea Market

For people who love the hunt, flea markets are a dayÕs entertainment. Sunday is the best day and the Fairfax High School Flea Market is my favorite. Some experienced, some virgin vendors (I mean their first time out, you canÕt buy virgins here) sell antiques, vintage clothing, crafts and junque in the school parking lot. The last two times I was there, there were bands and some decent food for sale. Admission is $1.00 but worth every penny for the people watching even if you do not buy anything. I bought stuff from Christi who makes great beaded necklaces.
Ceiba Records ~ Fashion/Music/Art

Say hello to Peter Zeigelmeyer, Proprietor.

_________________

For a very long time now, I've been jonesin' for one of those cool-looking Gado Gado sweatshirts with the tribal design on the sleeves and the long pointy swirly hoods that I see in Ceiba's window when I pass by the store...maybe in red.

Touring Ceiba with Peter Ziegelmeier and Marie is a worldwide affair: local designers Dreamtime, Eka, and Space Turtle; Hikari from Japan; Psylo/Israel; Gado Gado/Austria; Nuclear Star/Italy; Quantum Leap & Mido from Bali all compete for my Mastercard's attention. But my favorite items in the store at the moment has got to be those stash belts by Hipsterr SF (modeled by Marie at right), which are like old-west gun holsters of wonderfully crafted leather but instead of gun holsters you get pockets for all of your raver or just-plain-boring-old-daily needs. These are way hipper than the standard fanny-pack, that's for damn sure, and I'll bet no one ever broke up with/refused to go out with/beat up someone for wearing a Hipsterr.

Furry playa coats by Simone Schulz and an interesting selection of jewlery by Gina Pfanz round out the offerings of a bit of each type of gear you might need for an overnight dance party or just a hard day of urban living.

If you're wondering where the music comes in, Peter founded Ceiba Records in 1996 and produces psytrance, progressive trance, and downtempo ambient music; listen and buy in the back of the store or on the website.

Betsy Dee: Global Style/Local Talent

Video: Stephanie Don of Betsey Dee welcomes us to Betsy Dee's Haight Ashbury boutique.
_____

"When dressing for an evening out, I always choose chandelier earrings. They're more likely to match the lampshade I will inevitably be wearing."
~Betsy Dee

Sounds like the kind of friend you want to take to your office Christmas party, or rather skip your office Christmas party to go to a burlesque show with instead! Betsy Dee's store inventory selection follows that same kind of party girl theme, with fun clothes in soft, feminine, plush fabrics and a hearty selection of unique artisan jewelry.

This is the place for petite/small women and women who like to wear their clothing reallyreallllly tight to buy sexy tops to go with favorite jeans (Anoname $89) and incredibly soft skirts to kick around with in those new red boots. I especially dug Momie's skirts (see polka dot skirt photo shown with tank tops to the right), which sport great pockets featuring 50s-looking cocktail stencils and are made from interestingly oddly-matched soft soft soft cotton vintage fabrics. At $98 these skirts are reasonably priced given the feel, workmanship, and look.

Many of the designers Betsy Dee carries are local, with a few from Los Angeles and the midwest, and she hires interns and local designers to work in the store. One of my favourite pieces, which, like Betsy Dee's own "Bad Pants" label--a sizzling "Sharon Stone" kind of line--looks much better on a human than on the hanger, was a denim skirt with insets (see photo over there on the right hand side somewhere) designed by a student at San Francisco's Art Institute in a student fashion show that Betsy sponsors called "The Denim Invention." Some pieces created in that show are still available in the store, such as a sexy little jean-material corset.

Interesting t-shirts that are lots more fun to wear than the standard plain Gap cotton number start at $25 and saucy little skirts that would be great with your stomper boots are $45-$90something. I do wish designers would cover a wider range of sizes to suit the curvier and taller of us!

Be sure to check out the well-made and not-as-pricey-as-you-might-think designer jewelry in the cases lining the back of the store. Betsy Dee carries a better variety of jewelry than most mainly-clothing kind of stores. You never know where you might find the perfect signature piece for Fall.

Clothes Contact: Fashion & Fabrics by the pound

I knew I recognized that guy from somewhere! Sean, formerly of Departures from the Past, is now performing irreverent and raunchy stand-up comedy at Clothes Contact in addition to Brainwash (Thursdays) and Canvas Gallery (Tuesdays). He'll make you laugh even while advising you that the leopard print mumu makes your ass look, well, BIG.

I popped in here just for a minute and ended up staying long enough to find a terrificly patterned set of 50s pajamas for $18 (this is a stellar set, I'd peg it at $75 or so if it were freshly laundered and pressed and presented in a tonier store) and a $5 red hoodie with a "Sexy" pull tag (in case anyone doesn't notice immediately).

Alley, dressed nattily in Clothes Contact finds (photos at right), advised buying lightweight clothes since Clothes Contact charges by the pound, but if things are extra heavy accommodations might be made to adjust the price. My pal bought a plush mauve velvet curtain to fashion into her reconstructed overalls and paid just $10--a good amount less than such a good piece of cloth might usually bring. Sure, she'll need to have it cleaned but the price is a bargain including that cost.

If you're not afraid to dig in and have a good eye and feel for quality fabric you can find some remarkable pieces to wear as-is or rework into your reconstructed fantasy wardrobe.

This is Clothes Contact's 20th anniversary celebration, so if you get there soon you'll get a 20% discount.

Miranda Caroligne – A Living Construction Boutique

Shhhhh! Miranda at work in her boutique.
________________________
Miranda Caroligne is like a fairy's closet. A good fairy, one who would save Cinderella's neck with a last-minute ballgown, but it would be a ballgown that made a unique statement about wearable waste in addition to making a statement about the wearer.

Filled with magical goodies, this store compels visitors to choose a talisman for their next journey and maybe a lucky hand-felted hat for a lover's birthday.

In addition to representing Miranda C. Burns' work, Miranda Caroligne offers many area designers' one-of-a-kind pieces, original artwork, and jewelry.

If one-of-a-kind neo-archaic creations make you shiver with delight you'd better meditate for a few days before entering. Miranda will design a special piece for and with you; if you're trying to figure out how the hell your mother's beloved wedding dress can be reconstructed to fit into your commitment ceremony you should schedule a visit.

I found a most delightful curiousity whilst I was visiting with Miranda and urge you to do the same. Seek out the enchanting creatures therein before they amble away. If you ask nicely you might even get to peep at their accompanying storybooks.

"...biomechanical forms that arise from her public studio often compel the wearer to dance, play and behave fantastically."

Vivienne Westwood Opening at the de Young Museum

Visiting San Francisco for the weekend, I joined some friends of mine there to go to the opening party of the Vivienne Westwood exhibit. I spent the entire time inside the show and by the time I got out, it was too late for me to get my free cocktail.

The show is set up in on a chronologically linear path, which is not a particularly creative way to do things, but more pedagogical. I enjoyed that and thought it was not a bad decision on the part of the curator. The lighting was very, very low on the show. I wonder if there is more light in the daytime. It's a shame to dull the colors of her work in bad lighting.

Walking through the show, I felt inspired, saw a lot of little ideas I'd like to use, and then felt a bit depressed knowing that I haven't any time at all to make things these days. Or at least not as many things as I would like. It is a great feeling, though to turn on the designing lights in my brain for a couple hours and give the part of me that uses those ideas a bit of exercise.

The crowd was very mellow and mostly dressed to the hilt. Lots of corsets, of course. If ever there was an opprotunity to haul out the corset, well, this was it. The person with the best get up was wearing a buffalo-head hat. There were a couple drag queens in pastel-colored victorian wigs who were pretty remarkable, also.
Tags: fashion, design, party, vivienne westwood

Map this on Platial

Brooklyn Industries

Storefront Tour, Location 9

The first Smelling Committee was in search of unseen maladies. But this new thing called Brooklyn Industries doesn’t smell anything like the historic industries of Brooklyn found along Newtown Creek! This place smells so new, fresh and somehow… trendy? Do you think you can smell trendiness? Or the person who stitched your clothes? Please investigate.

This industry smells nothing like the billowing black clouds of oil refineries that used to drape Brooklyn, Queens and East Manhattan. People in the 19th and early 20th centuries used to have to close their windows all summer due to the foul industrial stenches. John D. Rockefeller chose Newtown Creek as the site for his Standard Oil company in 1870. What was once a playground of wealthy mansions quickly transformed into a hotbed shuttling industry goods to and from the ocean along the railroad. There were oil refineries, sewage treatment plants and factories. Like the Cooper Glue Company, which boiled the refuse of tanneries and slaughterhouses into glue and gelatin. Soon all kinds of industrial wastes were filling the creek. Including a mixture of glue and putrefying bovines that formed what was known as Dead Animal Wharf. In the early 1900’s, the 3.5 mile creek did almost as much business as the Mississippi River. The Mississippi is 3,900 miles long.

The Brooklyn Industries logo may be rooftops and water towers, but the Committee knows what the lasting smell of Brooklyn industries is. The oil refineries have had a long-lasting effect on Brooklyn, Queens and the East River. As the waterfront is developed into lofts and condos, a glossy rainbow of oil slick and black goo is slowly expanding into the East River, underground and along the shoreline of Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Queens, stretching towards Manhattan and deeper into Brooklyn. Residents can smell gas in their pipes especially when it rains and the water molecules make the odor more apparent. Newtown Creek is so toxic that a fireman who swallowed some of the creek water while saving someone from drowning, died two days later.

One of the world’s largest oil spills occurred in the 1940s and 50s due to underground leaks at these oil refineries. ExxonMobil is primarily held responsible for the17 million gallon oil spill at Newtown Creek, which encompasses 55 acres and growing. The spill was discovered about 30 years later in 1978. Even though the spill is larger than the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill off the coast of Alaska and it’s in an urban area, clean-up only began in 1995 and has been painfully slow. Merely half of the toxic sludge has been removed.

There is a very active group of advocates and residents called Riverkeeper who monitor the creek, and recently won a lawsuit to have the State Attorney General prosecute the case, as well as have the EPA perform an independent study of the toxicity and effects of the spill. As a prime example of the entrepreneurial spirit and tradition of DIY Williamsburg, a fellow who learned about the spill began drilling for oil. But he only got about 20 feet down before neighbors began complaining about the stench.
Tags: fashion, clothing, smell, art, new york, industry, nolita, odor, smelling committee

Map this on Platial
Storefront Tour, Location 10

Like the new Brooklyn Industries, Nolita Industries follow a quaint pattern of irresistible digs and stylish accessories that strive to associate clothes with money, power, individuality, cultural capital, sex drive and horsepower. What Smelling Committee members may wish to note as well is the careful attention to odor association that some businesses are testing in their stores in a pervasive attempt at olfactory branding.

The real estate cliché of baking bread in a home to increase potential buyers’ receptivity and associations with homeyness is an old technique. Bakeries and fast food restaurants have long realized the efficacy of piping their salivatory kitchen exhaust out onto the streets rather than into a back alley. But until recently, the notion of branding the olfactory atmosphere of a commercial environment has remained restricted to a few kooky mega millionaires. Like MacDonald’s, for example, whose unmistakable Big Mac odor is a top secret, patented flavor perfume created by none other than International Flavors and Fragrances in New York and produced in New Jersey.

The development of inexpensive technologies to release a controlled atmospheric odor into an environment has spurred many businesses to experiment with an odor identity and a truly sensorial shopping Experience. Only a few are willing to talk publicly about this experimental new technique. Samsung’s flagship store on the Upper West Side smells faintly tropical, sweet and melony with its new odor identity, also developed by the IFF. Sony has a unique scent in its stores, which it sends home in sachets in its shopping bags, and is considering impregnating in its plastic packaging. Not only electronics corporations but hotel chains, diamond retailers, amusement parks, golf companies, automobile manufacturers and cell phone stores have also taken advantage of environmental smell technologies. Verizon spent a year developing the chocolate fragrance that accompanied the displays of its LG Chocolate phones, and tested its multinational appeal on noses across the globe.

Careful attention has been paid to gendering products, as market research has shown that buyers are twice as likely to stick around and purchase clothing if the ambient odor is feminine for women’s clothing, and masculine for men’s clothing. If women’s clothing is scented with a masculine odor, women are less likely to stick around and buy, and vise versa for men.

Olfactory branding is rather hit or miss, as there are few odors with mass appeal and odors are not drugs. But the idea is to directly tap into the limbic system of consumers by establishing an emotional memory that connects olfactory recognition with a brand identity. Smelling Committee members know that it takes longer for a positive olfactory association to be developed than a negative one. Nonetheless, initial studies have shown that, at the very least, pleasant odors tailored to consumers increase receptiveness to a product, the number of times they examine a product, how long they linger over an item, and sometimes that they are willing to pay higher prices. Only more reason to bring one’s consciousness into a daily awareness of olfactory experience.
Tags: fashion, clothing, smell, art, new york, branding, nolita, odor, smelling committee

Map this on Platial
