Camp Joy Garden

Camp Joy Garden is a small, organic family farm that is run as an educational non-profit organization. Since 1971 we have been teaching ourselves and others how to live more sustainable lives through gardening, animal husbandry, food preservation, and other skills of simple living. We offer nine month garden apprenticeships as well as shorter classes, on a variety of topics, for children and adults. The fruits of our labor are sold to people in the Santa Cruz Mountains through our CSA. We also sell honey at several local stores, and arrange flowers for weddings and other special events.
Tags: sustainable farming, organic farming, education, small farming, local food

Map this on Platial

When I *heard* about the 9/11 attacks

At 9:03 AM on 11 September 2001, the second airplane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. I was in Florida, at the Emma T. Booker Elementary School, listening to children read. Chief of Staff Andrew Card came over and whispered in my ear, "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack."

What did I, the Commander in Chief do? Nothing. I sat there. I sat for well over 5 minutes, doing nothing while 3,000 people were dying and the attacks were still in progress.

Not only did I, the leader of the free world sit as my country was attacked, the Secret Service also did nothing. I was appearing in public at a previously announced photo-op. I was a sitting duck. The attacks were ongoing at that point (planes had yet to hit the Pentagon or the field in Pennsylvania), and nobody knew how much more destruction was going to happen. Were there two, three, four, eight more planes hijacked and on their way to crash into prominent buildings?

Was one headed for the school, where anyone who checked my public itinerary would know I was located? Were other terrorists planning to detonate dirty nukes? Were they going to release anthrax or smallpox or sarin? Was an assassination squad going to burst into the school and get me? Was a suicide bomber going to ram a truck full of explosives into this classroom?

During the midst of the attacks, any of these things could've happened. Yet I calmly sat here, seemingly unconcerned. My Chief of Staff likewise doesn't think that America in flames warrants my immediate attention. And the Secret Service utterly fails to do its job of grabbing me, the President of the United States and getting me to safety. It's truly inexplicable.

And it's something the administration isn't too eager to trumpet. We haven't released footage of my (non)actions during this historic moment of American history. Until now, the only available footage had been a little film put together by Booker Elementary. The problem is, there's a jump edit in the footage: From the time Card whispers to me until the end of the scene in the classroom, only 2 minutes and 10 seconds elapse.

But this new, fuller footage shows me sitting for a full five minutes after I've been told that "America is under attack."

I declined to take action even longer than this, but this footage ends before I leave the classroom. Thanks to an amazing article by Allan Wood and Paul Thompson, we know what happened after the footage suddenly cuts off:

The only source to describe what happened next is Fighting Back by Bill Sammon. Publishers Weekly described Sammon's book as an "inside account of [my] administration's reaction to 9-11 [and] a breathless, highly complimentary portrait of the president [showing] the great merit and unwavering moral vision of his inner circle." [Publisher's Weekly, 10/15/02] Sammon's conservative perspective makes his account of my behavior at the end of the photo-op all the more surprising. I am described as smiling and chatting with the children "as if I didn't have a care in the world" and "in the most relaxed manner imaginable." White House aide Gordon Johndroe, then came in as he usually does at the end of press conferences, and said, "Thank you, press. If you could step out the door we came in, please." A reporter then asked, "Mr. President, are you aware of the reports of the plane crash in New York? Is there anything...", But I interrupted, and recalling my orders, "DON'T SAY ANYTHING YET," I responded, "I'll talk about it later." But still I did not leave. "I stepped forward and shook hands with [classroom teacher] Daniels, slipping my left hand behind her in another photo-op pose. I was taking my good old time. ... I lingered until the press was gone." [Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism - From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 90]

For a detailed portrait of what I did and didn't do on 9/11, you can do no better than to read this article here. It is based completely on reports from mainstream media and statements from government officials.

Apologists claim that I didn't leave simply because I didn't want to interrupt and upset the children, but this falls apart for several reasons:

1) America is being attacked, thousands are dying, and I don't know if we're facing nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks, as well. Couldn't I just say, "Excuse me, kids, I need to take care of something. It's part of being President, y'understand. I'll be back as soon as I can."

2) At the moment Card told me about the second plane, the children weren't reading to me. They had finished reading words from an easel and were reaching under their chairs for a book when Card whispered to me. Another 30 seconds would elapse before they started reading again. This pause was a perfect time for me to politely excuse myeslf, but nooooo.

3) By staying, I not only endangered my own life, but the lives of all of these children. Wouldn't it be better to risk upsetting them than to risk letting them die in a terror attack?

4) Even if I was afraid of hurting the kiddies' feelings, what about my Secret Service? Have they been trained not to attempt to save my life if it might bother some schoolchildren?

5) What about Chief of Staff Andrew Card, White House Spokesperson Ari Fleischer, and other officials who were in that classroom? Didn't they feel that a 21st-century Pearl Harbor and a potential attack on the President himself were worth some sort of action?

6) Finally, and most damningly, this excuse doesn't explain why I continued to mill around the classroom for several minutes after the children had finished reading.

Somewhere, someone has the complete, uncut footage of me in Booker Elementary, from the time I enter the classroom until I finally walk out. If you have this footage, please send it to me, seriously.

1963/06/11. Despite Governor George Wallace physically blocking their way, Vivian Malone and James Hood register for classes at the University of Alabama. governor of Alabama was George Wallace. He had run for and won the office on the slogan of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." In June of 1963, a federal court barred any state government interference with the enrollment of two black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, at the University of Alabama. Despite this order, Governor George Wallace appointed himself the temporary University registrar and stood in the doorway of the administration building to prevent the students from registering. In response, President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard. One hundred guardsman escorted the students to campus and their commander, General Henry Graham, ordered George Wallace to "step aside." Thus were the students registered.
Hazon

The word hazon is Hebrew for "vision."

Our vision is of a renewed Jewish community: one that is rooted in Jewish tradition, engaged with the world around us, radically inclusive, passionate and creative.

Our vision is of a community that fosters people's journeys, that engenders compassion among its members, and that recognizes that there are shivim panim l'torah - seventy ways to understand the Torah.

Our vision is of a community in which people's lives are enriched through engagement and challenge: engagement across difference, with those of different ages or backgrounds or beliefs, and challenge, both physical and intellectual, a mechanism for learning, growing and acting.

Our vision is of a community that engages vitally with the world in which we live, and in doing so achieves two things: the renewal of Jewish life itself, and the addition of a further chapter in the distinctive contribution that Jewish people have made to the world for three thousand years.

Our vision is of a community that seeks in myriad ways to learn and ultimately to live Hazon's theme-quote:

"the Torah is a commentary on the world,
and the world is a commentary on the Torah..."

Lawrence University - My Alma Mater

Once again I'm biased, since I graduated from here in 2004, but Lawrence University is a fantastic undergraduate liberal arts school. I have never regretted choosing to attend here. The university is divided between the college and the music conservatory. While all the students mingle, the "connies" are known for being singularly focused on their music studies. Students also tend to have a quirky side, which we jokingly referred to as "the Lawrence Difference" (which is printed on the school's literature). An example of this is the annual student-run Midwest Trivia Contest, broadcast every year on Wisconsin Public Radio for a weekend in January. Off-campus teams are welcome to join and teams come from all over the Midwest and beyond.

Lawrence hosts a wide range of artistic and cultural events throughout the year, many of which are open to the public. These include full-scale operas and musicals, dramas, musical concerts and student recitals. Lawrence also hosts an annual Jazz Festival with a range of world-renowned jazz artists, and a convocation series which brings in a variety of experts to share their expertise, including people such as Fareed Zakaria, Lech Walsea, and Frank McCourt. Wander the beautiful collegiate campus, especially in the fall when the Main Hall Green is awash in brilliant reds and golds.
Tags: education, music, wisconsin, performing arts, colleges, universities, appleton, lawrence university, fox cities

Map this on Platial

The Rock Creek Campus is situated about 12 miles west of downtown Portland, in the rapidly growing Beaverton-Hillsboro area of Washington County. The campus' concrete and wood structures fit nicely into the rolling hill farmland, creating a pristine study environment.

Spacious, open malls highlight Rock Creek, which opened in 1976. The land for this scenic oasis was purchased in 1969 for $584,955 and has provided a great return on Portland Community College's investment, offering important educational services to a rural-suburban community.

The Sylvania Campus is located in suburban Southwest Portland between Lake Oswego and Tigard. The campus opened in 1968 and rests on a gently sloping hillside, bordered by a forest of Douglas firs, oaks, maples and alders. It offers breathtaking views of Tualatin Valley, Bull Mountain and the Oregon Coast Range.

Since its inception, the Sylvania Campus has become a complete and dynamic branch of the PCC experience. The cornerstones of the campus are the library and performing arts center, which were built in 1994. The library features the latest in learning resources while the nearby performing arts center is a fully equipped theater and dance venue.

Portland Community College - Cascade Campus

The Cascade Campus is situated in the revitalized North Portland area, offering students a centralized location and a growing list of academic programs. It is a developing urban campus, located in the heart of a historic neighborhood, and is the home of such annual festivities as the PCC Mardi Gras celebration and the Cascade Festival of African Films. Easily accessed from Interstate 5, the campus enjoys a culturally rich landscape, featuring an exciting atmosphere of expanding academic services and campus facilities.

PCC purchased the land and facilities of the campus from a defunct four-year Christian college called Cascade College in the late 1960s and the new campus opened in the fall of 1971. Ever since, the Cascade Campus has become a focal point for rebirth in the neighborhood and serves local residents with needed job training, college transfer and self-improvement courses.

Numerous community programs like childcare, legal aid, neighborhood associations and job referral services are located either on the campus or within easy reach of it. In addition to its traditional academic programs, Cascade also is the home of the Skill Center, which gives people of all ages a chance to learn basic education to start a new life.

Cascade serves over 14,000 students each year under campus president Algie Gatewood. (PCC website)

cambridge center for adult education

Since 1938, The Cambridge Center has consistently offered the most diverse menu of courses to adults in Cambridge and surrounding areas.

    * We are a non-profit.
    * We are self-supporting, relying on tuition income and contributions.
    * We are here to give people the opportunity to explore their interests and nurture their talents and potential.

First incorporated as the Cambridge Social Union in April 1876, then in 1938, we officially became the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. In 1889 the Social Union purchased and moved into the House of William Brattle at 42 Brattle Street, which was built in 1727. In late 1972 the Cambridge Center acquired the Blacksmith House (the former Window Shop) property. Blacksmith House includes the Dexter Pratt House, built in 1811, where Longfellow observed the famous Village Blacksmith at work under the Spreading Chestnut Tree in 1839. Both houses are being preserved by the Center as living museums and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Tags: dance, education, music, computers, art, life, cooking, cambridge, harvard square, cambridge center for adult education, ccae, brattle street

Map this on Platial

The Southeast Campus is an outgrowth of the San Francisco Community College District’s former Skills Center, which offered primarily vocational training classes. In 1987, the Campus was relocated to the Oakdale site. This site is a San Francisco City and County-owned building which was erected as a community facility-a “mitigation facility.” The building was to be trade off for the solid waste treatment plant established adjacent to the site. According to city legislation establishing the building, the Southeast facility is by law supposed to house an educational program, a child care program, a community meeting room, and a program for older adults. The current tenants in the facility are a Head Start childcare program, City College of San Francisco, and a community political action group.

City College is the anchor tenant, leasing approximately 85% of the building. Other building tenants include the Southeast Career Link, Renaissance Parents for Success, a community-based organization, and New Direction, a youth development prog
Tags: city college of san francisco southeast campus, san francisco, events, reviews, college, community college, education, city college

Map this on Platial
