Ron's Drive-in

Ron's Drive-in has been a staple in Spokane Valley since the middle of the last century... and when I was young, it was the first restaurant I remember going to. I would walk the few blocks from my home — through the horse fields, and over the railroad tracks — and I'd always get a corn dog.

( Mmm... corn dogs. )

I think one or two of my siblings even worked there one summer.
Tags: rons drivein, spokane valley, washington, corn dogs, restaurant, eat, dine, drivethru

Map this on Platial

Open until 4AM. Kitchen closes 3AM. The weekend crowd at Cahoots runs from an impressive turnout of off-duty musicians and their hangers-on to a wall-to-wall thicket of every kind of Louisville resident on record. On such evenings, once you flash your ID at the door, you run smack into a snaking line of patrons negotiating the narrow hall on the right that leads from the front bar past the restrooms, cigarette machine and ATM. This opens up to the larger rear bar with booths, pool tables and even more people. Officially open until 4 or 5, but sometimes later. People have flocked to this neighborhood joint since 1941, and although it's been under new ownership since 2001, the same black and white decor, chrome accents and pierced, tattooed and disaffected staff remains. Personalities blend in this small diner, from teenagers to daily regulars. Belly up to the counter if you don't feel like waiting for a table on the weekends when it gets packed. There is seating at the bar, around 10 tables, and several leather couches situated in the back. There are high ceilings and unique lighing. One poster described it as having "loft like" feel (see review below). There is also a good sized raised stage & a open floor area in front of it. This will be a venue for live music and other performances. The flyer also says they have nightly live music. One entire side of Lola has windows facing 15th street, and it's a quick jaunt over from the 16th street mall.
Tom's Diner

Stick with breakfast. Always. Not because other stuff on the menu is bad, but simply because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Doesn't matter what time you eat it. Bacon, eggs, a big pile of taters, some Tabasco, this is the gas that drives our machine. The superglue that holds up our kicking contruction worker. The fuzz in our pillows, the Green in our Lantern. All here, available for what amounts to pocket change.
Denver Diner

Denver's number one option for late night downtown eats. Everyone knows the Diner. Slightly scarred, a little bit like a Howard Johnson's on a Kansas highway, the Diner packs in the drunks, the college students, even the movers-n-shakers. The food is typically greasy, but the menu is big enough and the servers are amazingly gracious, considering the quantity and relative quality of the patrons. You try slopping hash browns to soused club kids at 3 in the morning on Wednesday and see if you can still get it up for a smile. Betcha can't.

At 18:00 we met at the Pa Besok a recently opened bar following the trend and looks of the bars located around Mollevangstorget, which is a very attractive and expanding area. But this bar is the first to cross Nobelvagen, which has become a border for where this area ends and a new begins. This bar then becomes a symbol for the next area to be gentrified and how and by whom this process will start. It becomes very obvious when we are sitting here that we are very much part of this process. Especially in this case when we are here with the intention to map out our local terrain and talk about how or what these sites means and functions in relation to our different engagements. We have no set route from the beginning and after talking and marking on the map we decide upon three different areas to visit. We have no specific theme in mind only this one idea, to walk between very different areas and talk about both the actual crossing and passing through the different layers in the city, and how these different sites and layers relate to each other and to us.

Where do we begin? Which walk do we choose to do? What kind of map are we producing and for whom? How does these sites relate to our different practices? How does our different practices shape and effect these sites?

The best greasy spoon diner in Denver. The late night crowd is a melange of Denver's party people and miscreants. The food is reasonably priced and tastes great going down. Good burgers and shakes (a staple of any late night diner soiree). If you're in the mood to go Greek, the gyros are the best in Denver---a jaw can only open so wide and these gyros test the limit. There's souvlaki, which is like gyro, but with chunks of marinated pork instead of gyro meat (awesome), and then there's the chicken kabobs (which rule).
Tags: 24/7, 24hour, open all night, allnight, late, latenight, afterhours, afterconcert, coffee, food, eat, nosh, munchies, breakfast, pancakes, diner, comfort food, greasy spoon, kabob, burgers, shakes, cops, breakfast burrito, satiated

Map this on Platial

Brat Days 2006 Festival

        Celebrate by eating brats! August 3 - 5, 2006
There website says: It all began in the 19th century when sausage found its way to Sheboygan through German Settlers. Over the years the ancient Roman tradition of cooking them over an open flame has been kept alive by the people of Sheboygan. Though no one will ever understand the phrase “Brat Fry” because they are grilled, brats continue to be the focal point of the community.

The first festival was held in 1953 in downtown Sheboygan. Back then it was a common sight to see streets re-named Bratwurst Blvd., and Seemel-Strasse. Horse drawn wagons were also seen in the annual parade.

After holding it for more than 13 years, the decision was made to cancel it because the crowds had gotten too big for the city’s downtown to handle.

In 1978 the festival was revitalized! Brat day’s is the largest fundraiser for the Sheboygan Jaycees. All proceeds are given back to the community primarily through donations. Past organizations that have received donations include the Field of Dreams (Sheboygan Recreation Department), Above and Beyond Children’s Museum, Jaycee Quarryview Park, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Area High School Scholarship Program, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

This shows one of the many brat stands setup throughout downtown Sheboygan in the 1950's. At one time there were over 50 brat stands operated by different organizations and businesses.

George Webb Restaurant

Burgers are good and cardboard thin, but best when stacked and slathered with cheese and fried onions. For something different, try the Super George with Thousand Island dressing. Skip fries in favor of fried potato wedges with peels still in place. For breakfast, eggs rule, especially over-easy with sides of crisp hash browns to soak up the yolks. Unlike many greasy spoons, Webb's makes eggs in frying pans rather than on the grill for a more delicate, buttery taste. Don't miss the chili--it's thinner than most, with beans, meat and broken spaghetti noodles.

2214 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI

Since 1947, this has been one of Milwaukee's favorites for traditional coffee-shop cooking. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, there's always an interesting crowd--especially after the bars close down. A fire burned down the original Ma Fischer's, but the re-built place opened in the summer of 2003. It's now larger, with a distinctly separated smoking section.

Taco TICO Mexican Restaurant

This was my absolute favorite restaurant as a kid. I used to get cheese enchiladas with extra hot sauce and taco burgers. The best are the deep-fried sugar-and-cinnamon-coated crispy breads they serve for dessert. Oh, I was also rather fond of the refried beans and chips.

I haven't eaten here in years.

I used to skip out of school at lunch time with Jenny Johl, who was pretty much the only friend I had who had the balls to skip school with me ever. We'd come to to Taco Tico and gorge ourselves on fast food and the sweet taste of liberty while playing Billy Idol's "White Wedding" on the juke box.

Then we'd usually just go back to school in time for our afternoon class.

Brig O'Doon Restaurant and Hotel

Mobile Food Guide Review of Brig O'Doon House Hotel
'My favourite place to eat in Scotland,' enthused one Mobile Food Guide correspondent about this tasteful little hotel. The poet Robbie Burns was born in Alloway, and Brig O' Doon House ('a stunning venue') is right at the heart of the tourist trail. It stands beside the old hump-backed bridge over the River Doon (setting for the comic climax of 'Tam O'Shanter') and is a much-sought-after choice for romantic weddings: the hotel's vaulted ballroom is one of the most impressive venues of its kind in Scotland.

Built in 1827, the house has been sympathetically upgraded over the years – although it's lost nothing of its unique atmosphere and still puts on a show with tartan and timbers everywhere. An open fire blazes in the beamed restaurant, which provides great views of the landscaped gardens leading down to the river.
Tags: eat, food, restaurant, brig o'doon

Map this on Platial
I haven't been to the bar yet. I like the look of the over-the-top bubble wrap interior, but I saw two absolutely gionormous flat-screen television sets behind the bar, which is a huge turn off.
