Seeing Daniel Menche swallow a microphone

Dan Menche, a rebel skates local who used to drive us up the west hills, got into music. Not really the kind of music you normally listen to.

I saw him open for (maybe it was for Motorgoat?) some band at the XRay where he just literally screamed at full volume "GET OUT, LEAVE, GET OUT OF HERE, I'M NOT STOPPING TILL YOU ALL LEAVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!"

It worked, he (eventually) cleared the tiny tiny all ages downtown punk venue. I think most of us stuck aorund thinking it'd turn into something more 'engaging'.

The next time I saw him perform here, he swallowed a contact mic, you could hear all kinds of gurggles happening, then took another mic and started swinging it around like a lasso, faster and faster, the wind in the screen started hissing, then whistling.

Not really the kind of stuff to jam to on yer ipod, this approach to musical performance is very spiritual, and I appreciate Dan's take on things. By this time he drove a nice newish Jetta around town, and was really living by his own rules. I don't think any of the Rebel skates dudes really 'got' his music.

Years later, at Amoeba records in Berkeley, I found a cd with his name on it. I had no idea he was still doing it, let alone actually putting out media. That moment sealed in my mind that he was basically a legend.

Jennifer works her magic!
__________________

I saw some of Jennifer Lynne's pieces at a recent Luggage Store trunk show and was excited to visit her Mission store. What a fun collection! From the sassy green frock featured in the center of the store (photo at right) to autumn-hued trousers and delicately designed tanks (also shown at right),and bouncing over to the bouyant wine bottle cork halter top, Jennifer has a delightful way of redefining everyday fashion sense.

My visit found Jennifer busily at work creating a surplice wrap sweater dress. If you catch her at a slow time, she'll tailor her designs for you on the spot!

Porcelynne opened in February of 2006 and Jennifer, who attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and gave up the business for a couple years before committing to her design work, has recently left her day job to focus on her creations full-time.

If you are in the mood for a wardrobe update and want to support a local designer while looking different-than-most, here's your place. Porcelynne also features the work of many local designers including Amy M. Cool's highly touchable recycled fabric handbags and jewelry by 19 Moons and Tessa Poppe. I'm going to have to go back for the earrings created with Lite-Brites (photo at right).

The most intriguing of Porcelynne's offerings is the "Panty-A-Month" club. You'll get a new pair of stinkies designed by Jennifer every month--imagine how fun it could be to get this monthly offering from a lover in the subsequent months after breaking up--the turmoil the poor chump would go through knowing that you'll be wearing the panties he bought you--he bought YOU--with your new lover. Oh, the possibilities!

Art work in the gallery rotates; the current show features work created on heat-sensitive fax paper with a soldering iron (shown at right). Check out Porcelynne's website for gallery show information.
Tags: porcelynne, porcelynne boutique and gallery, mission, 14th street, san francisco, california, jennifer lynne, panty of the month club, handmade, diy, jewelry, clothing, lingerie, local, recycled, reconstructed, designers, fashion

Map this on Platial

sneaky fake one way street sign

mid 1990's, wandering around town, trying to get up to corona heights park, i walk up this stretch of henry street, and notice that it has a do not enter, one way street sign pointing out (east) of the street. I stroll to the top of the hill and discover it to be a dead end. THE DO NOT ENTER ONE WAY STREET SIGN WAS A FAKE! What genius! What pragmatism! What gall! What a con! It really made my day.

Instead of charging a fee for services, the Bike Kitchen charges membership dues: either $5 a day, or $30 a year. Purchasing a membership gives you access to all the tools and parts in our inventory. If you’re short on cash, you can earn a membership or parts by volunteering in the shop for a certain number of hours.

OSBall court behind Wells Fargo Bank

with the heavy use of the bocci courts in the park, and with the bocci league in full swing this time of year, we have been forced underground, to play on a makeshift court in the drive through part of the Wells Fargo parking lot.

This is actually fine, the surrounding walls make for less chasing due to leadfooting, and the extra width is actually a nice change. the downsides are, the constant stench of urine, and the lack of curbs at the bases allows for some extra controversy regarding inbound rolling kicks.

I do highly recommend this court though, and if we keep playing afternoon games, this will certainly become a regular hangout for the teams.
Tags: osball, sports, diy, games, urine, citac, wizards of os

Map this on Platial

Give Us A Map!!

The growing city of Chorley hasn't had a municipal map update since 1995, over 10 years ago. There are many who live in areas simply missing from the maps.

The Rev Kenneth Barratt, vicar of St George's CE Church on St George's Street in the town centre, has labelled the lack of an official map as a 'nuisance' and a 'farce'.

Jeff Jarvis, of Buzzmachine.com suggests a community driven effort to document the town in a grass roots manner, from the ground up!

Tour de Fat Bike Carnival - 8/19/2006

This looks like a bunch of fun, that we'll be missing :(

Grab your bike and slip into your alter-ego because New Belgium's philanthropic cycling circus Tour de Fat is hitting the road for its sixth season! Costumes and decorated bikes reign supreme as the participants come for a casual ride, good music and entertainment, then stay, of course, for the beer. Amid the hoopla, Tour de Fat also raises money for local charities.

Admission to the Tour de Fat is free. All profits from beer sales go to local non profit organizations.

Here is a video from last year's festivities:

Clothes Contact: Fashion & Fabrics by the pound

I knew I recognized that guy from somewhere! Sean, formerly of Departures from the Past, is now performing irreverent and raunchy stand-up comedy at Clothes Contact in addition to Brainwash (Thursdays) and Canvas Gallery (Tuesdays). He'll make you laugh even while advising you that the leopard print mumu makes your ass look, well, BIG.

I popped in here just for a minute and ended up staying long enough to find a terrificly patterned set of 50s pajamas for $18 (this is a stellar set, I'd peg it at $75 or so if it were freshly laundered and pressed and presented in a tonier store) and a $5 red hoodie with a "Sexy" pull tag (in case anyone doesn't notice immediately).

Alley, dressed nattily in Clothes Contact finds (photos at right), advised buying lightweight clothes since Clothes Contact charges by the pound, but if things are extra heavy accommodations might be made to adjust the price. My pal bought a plush mauve velvet curtain to fashion into her reconstructed overalls and paid just $10--a good amount less than such a good piece of cloth might usually bring. Sure, she'll need to have it cleaned but the price is a bargain including that cost.

If you're not afraid to dig in and have a good eye and feel for quality fabric you can find some remarkable pieces to wear as-is or rework into your reconstructed fantasy wardrobe.

This is Clothes Contact's 20th anniversary celebration, so if you get there soon you'll get a 20% discount.

Retro City Fashions has six shopping locations in the Bay area: Held Over, Clothes Contact, Sharks, La Rosa, Mission Thrift, and Mars. retrocity@retrocity.com

Shhhhh! Miranda at work in her boutique.
________________________
Miranda Caroligne is like a fairy's closet. A good fairy, one who would save Cinderella's neck with a last-minute ballgown, but it would be a ballgown that made a unique statement about wearable waste in addition to making a statement about the wearer.

Filled with magical goodies, this store compels visitors to choose a talisman for their next journey and maybe a lucky hand-felted hat for a lover's birthday.

In addition to representing Miranda C. Burns' work, Miranda Caroligne offers many area designers' one-of-a-kind pieces, original artwork, and jewelry.

If one-of-a-kind neo-archaic creations make you shiver with delight you'd better meditate for a few days before entering. Miranda will design a special piece for and with you; if you're trying to figure out how the hell your mother's beloved wedding dress can be reconstructed to fit into your commitment ceremony you should schedule a visit.

I found a most delightful curiousity whilst I was visiting with Miranda and urge you to do the same. Seek out the enchanting creatures therein before they amble away. If you ask nicely you might even get to peep at their accompanying storybooks.

"...biomechanical forms that arise from her public studio often compel the wearer to dance, play and behave fantastically."

I have passed by this Place a few times, thinking always that it was a fratty, buttoned up, martini-like, spa-like, hair gel, cologned, loud talking crowd, and assumed the Place would have $200 lampshades or something.
**BUT NO**
It's not at all anything like that stuff.
They have this enormous sketchy crazy mural behind the funkiest, most diy, falling apart, mosaic tiled bar top i've ever seen. They have a room full of pool tables, a slightly tropical theme (a fake palm tree with coconuts) and a *post literary* thing going on too (book shelves packed with dusty volumes that are liek 14' off the ground, no access to the books). The tables are made of OSB stained black, and the muddled cucumber mojito is the only thing that hints to the spa.

man jailed for making a crosswalk

Whitney Stump was tired of drivers ignoring stop signs at an intersection in his Muncie, Indiana neighborhood. After futile attempts to get the city to install crosswalks, Stump took matters into his own hands and painted one in at the corner of Dicks and North streets. Then he got arrested.

WRTV in Indianapolis reports:

Stump, a 27-year-old Ball State University graduate student and father, says he was arrested in July on a charge of criminal mischief for creating the crosswalk at the intersection of Dicks and North streets. A police officer then warned him after he went back to touch up the paint in August, and the county prosecutor decided to charge him again.

"If they're not going to provide a safe environment for me and my community, then I believe I have a moral obligation," Stump told 6News' Ray Cortopassi on Wednesday.

Stump said he first asked the city to do the job, thinking crosswalks would get drivers' attentions and make them aware they needed to slow down.

"I called the street and sign department probably a half-dozen times in the course of six months (to) a year," he said.

The city of Muncie says the intersection in question doesn't meet the criteria for crosswalk installation because it isn't near a school.

Stump missed a court date after he was charged the second time, which led to a 10-hour jail stint. But he says he plans to paint in additional crosswalks at the other three spokes of Dicks and North.
Tags: cops, traffic, diy, safety, crosswalk, muncie, redtape, bad news

Map this on Platial
UPDATE:
I really should have gone to this. After having slept six hours on an airplane coming home from portland, I just couldn't pull myself together to go to this event. I regret it. I wish I had made it.

MITERS, Saturday 10 March, 7pm
265 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA directions
Most of the Instructables & Squid Labs founders built things at MITERS when they were in school; it's a neat clubhouse full of people who love to make fun things. They've got an Instructables group to show some of them off. NOTE: Please don't bring beer or wine as this event is on the MIT campus.
