Vendima Vintage

Meet Graciela Ronconi of Vendima (anyone want to edit this poorly-lit video for me? :)
_____________________
Besides Graciela and staff's friendly vibe, what I love best about Vendima is that they carry new vintage-inspired pieces as well as the real thing. Sometimes your favorite look just can't be found in a certain kind of pattern or color or size and you've gotta do a little "cheat." Can you guess which of the menswear coats in the photo showing two of them side-by-side in the column over there on the right is the real vintage and which is the new, vintage-inspired piece?

Vendima carries Classic Hardware jewelry, which looks and feels like old Bakelite (see photo at right), shoes, coats, dresses, skirts and menswear that are reminiscient of 40s and 50s styles. Some of the new retro offerings include designs by local peeps Brown Sound, Sailor Jerry (did you know he was a real tattoo artist in the 30s and 40s? Yep he was, and you can get stationery here with his tattoo art as well as menswear sort of bowling shirts), Lucky 13, Rock Steady, and beau bois.

Graciela Ronconi moved to this primo spot (right next to Peasant Pies near the MUNI 24 bus line) and changed the store name to Vendima (which means "vintage" in Portugese) after 11 years at "Guys and Dolls" in a lesser-traveled Noe Valley location. She buys clothes from the public--you can call to set up an appointment to sell your duds--and from trade shows and wholesalers who scout and buy all over the country.

Winona Ryder shops here and scouts from Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren regularly check out the offerings for inspiration. I was digging the partytime Jackie O. looking metallic-threaded tweedish dresses with matching coats and if I didn't already have a couple sets from Aunt Esther I would have indulged.

In the far back of the store you can find gifts and the ever-popular sales rack; a sweet selection of vintage plastic baby clothes hangers were going for $2.50 each and some lovely dresses were marked way down (see photos at right).

Graciela is a gracious gal with a real vintage flair; let her style your vintage look.

Local designer's shop. I got my lovely pink ruffly scarf there and one of my favorite (best fitting) shirts with vintage pattern. They design and construct the clothing there. Sweet little shop. Here is what their website says: donna and toots is named after my eccentric and fashionable grandmother and great aunt. A trip to their numerous walk-in closets filled to the brim with such items as leopard-printed trousers, pink Chanel suits and red vinyl galore could curl anybody's toes. Together they were trouble, throwing elegant dinner parties and the occasional soiree. They were a huge impact on a little girl whose imagination had a hard time keeping up with their antics.

I have studied fashion design in New York and London, along with having worked in San Francisco for a women's clothing designer. For the past two and half years I have been designing, manufacturing, and retailing my own designs. I love to borrow styles from the past - the 50's and the 60's - but don't put it past me to throw a modern curve.
Tags: clothing, women, local, portland, fashion, vintage, patterns, style, accessories, designer, skirts

Map this on Platial
Saarinen's acchitecture is as lovely as it is famous. Here is one of his later, less known projects in Holmdel, NJ 07733, USA. This comlex was a corporate job for Bell labs and was designed to hold over 6,000 employees. It is the birthplace of many inventions and patents as well as home to nobel prize winners. Of more importance, take a look at the ominous water tower, which is the only real structure of the complex that you can see from the surrounding roads. Note, that it looks like a giant transistor! Creepy and cool. I'm a professional designer who hasn't done a lick of design work in about six months. I've worked in costume design for street theater, fashion design, interior design and gallery installation, and curating. My most recent works have been a series of very creepy doll portraits of livejournal users, and handbags made of recycled men's wool pants (which were in the Christmas shopping guide of DWELL magazine, excuse my bragging, but it was my first solo press).

I also wrote and taught an after-school class where 10-year-olds learned about immigration in their community and then designed and hand sewed dolls representing immigrants, with little stories to go along with them. Anyone interested in that can let me know and I'll pass the course outline on for free. Great fun.

My crafty passtimes include knitting, especially socks, drawing, drawing, drawing, paper mache, sewing, doll making, and printing.
Tags: knitting, sewing, designer, fabulous, teaching, fashion, art, craft, crafty vixen, drawing, handbags, reuse, recycling, wool, silk, lazy, printing, doll making, immigration, costume design, street theater, pret a porter, tri teddies, toothsome moose man, livejournal dolls, silkscreen, reconstructed, procrastinator, maple flowers, dfg dfgsd, dsadf sdfsdaf

Map this on Platial

Miranda Caroligne – A Living Construction Boutique

Shhhhh! Miranda at work in her boutique.
________________________
Miranda Caroligne is like a fairy's closet. A good fairy, one who would save Cinderella's neck with a last-minute ballgown, but it would be a ballgown that made a unique statement about wearable waste in addition to making a statement about the wearer.

Filled with magical goodies, this store compels visitors to choose a talisman for their next journey and maybe a lucky hand-felted hat for a lover's birthday.

In addition to representing Miranda C. Burns' work, Miranda Caroligne offers many area designers' one-of-a-kind pieces, original artwork, and jewelry.

If one-of-a-kind neo-archaic creations make you shiver with delight you'd better meditate for a few days before entering. Miranda will design a special piece for and with you; if you're trying to figure out how the hell your mother's beloved wedding dress can be reconstructed to fit into your commitment ceremony you should schedule a visit.

I found a most delightful curiousity whilst I was visiting with Miranda and urge you to do the same. Seek out the enchanting creatures therein before they amble away. If you ask nicely you might even get to peep at their accompanying storybooks.

"...biomechanical forms that arise from her public studio often compel the wearer to dance, play and behave fantastically."
