Jason and I are committed to burn 100 copies of this copyleft film and distribute them to the people we wished were watching with us. The people that we talk to about where we're headed and what our options are. The people we ask what a revolution would look like. The people we think can make a difference. The Smell is an all ages music venue happening in Downtown Los Angeles, California. It is a volunteer-run space with no employees or profit of any kind. On almost any night of the week one can come to The Smell and be part of an intimate performance by local and touring musicians. Most shows cost five dollars. Although there is a proper stage with adequate sound system and lighting, bands choose to play all over the club - from behind the stage to the front desk, from the bathroom to the parking lot. Aside it's primary function as a live music and performance art space. Enter through the alley.

Unemployed Unity Council (1934)*

The Communist Party organized “unemployment councils” during the depression, giving unemployed workers a means to support each other and struggle for political change in solidarity with employed workers. By the end of 1931, those in Portland had more than 3000 registered members. When efforts to work within the system failed, these councils often took direction action in defense of their members interests. For example, after some 400 unemployed stormed City Hall, the city agreed to provide housing and shelter for over 1000 unemployed working people. The main council headquarters was the location for the infamous 1934 police raid at which Dirk DeJonge was arrested for violating the Criminal Syndicalism Law. Criminal syndicalism was defined as "the doctrine which advocates crime, physical violence, sabotage or any unlawful acts or methods as a means of accomplishing or effecting industrial or political change or revolution." DeJonge, once a Communist Party candidate for Mayor of Portland, was charged with engaging in criminal syndicalism for giving a speech at the council headquarters that charged the police with siding with the steamship and stevedoring companies in their effort to break the longshore strike. He was found guilty despite a lack of any evidence that he had violated the law. He appealed the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court and in January 1937 he was cleared of all charges.

The People’s Clinic operated for 9 years and offered programs for sickle cell anemia and lead posioning testing, as well as general health care. It also helped individuals arrange transportation to visit family members in prison. Members of the community rallied to save it, by picketing against a proposed expansion by Emanuel Hospital.

InterFuse is a yearly, three day camping oriented event held in Missouri that upholds the ideals of the Burning Man Festival. It is a Midwest Regional Burn, similar to other Regional Burns held throughout the world every year. This year's InterFuse will be held May 5-7, 2006 at Camp Ozark Avalon - located in Boonville, Missouri, off I-70 between Kansas City and St. Louis. The goal of InterFuse is to unite the scattered Burners and pre-Burners of the Midwest in the flames of this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life - further spreading the unique Burning Experience through the region. Like at Burning Man, we will build a temporary city-community of tents, domes, light, dance, fire and music in the wilderness (in this case the forest, not the desert). We will celebrate our diversity continuously from Friday until Sunday morning. Then we will dismantle our city and Leave No Trace.

Dark Days

Marc Singer made this incredible documentary about homeless people living in a Manhattan subway tunnel. One of the most remarkable things about this film is how beautiful it is. I think that Singer is also a still photographer. The film is shot in black and white and very carefully lit. It's some of the most beautiful photography I've seen in a movie. The characters are compelling, the story is inspiring and full of drama.

After returning from Scotland in 1991 I spent a number of months out of work, until a friend told me about Lee Abbey and suggested I contact them and apply to work there. Lee Abbey is run by a resident community of Christians who stay for between 6 months and 2 years. I joined in September 1993 working in the kitchen, then moved on to working in Audio-Visual, recording the daily conference meetings. Here I fell in love, firstly with a South African called Ruth, and later with the woman whom I would later marry.

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore spoke at We Media 05 hosted by The Associated Press in New York; BBC Managing Director Mark Thompson, Reuters CEO Tom Glocer, actor Richard Dreyfuss and Nitin Desai of the United Nations participated in the We Media Global Forum in 2006 hosted by Reuters and the BBC in London. In Miami, the conference will focus on two connected themes: * Community: How can media and communications in a multitude of forms, produced or influenced by an ever-expanding multitude of sources, serve and strengthen the communities where people live? * Investment: In a shifting communications marketplace, how will investors, public and private funders or new formulations of social entrepreneurship pay for and sustain the civic enterprises of news and information? The program includes a series of roundtable discussions and a variety of participatory activities involving communities, individuals and organizations to help participants understand and address the challenges of a changing multi-media world, and to stimulate innovation and investment in projects and services that strengthen communities. China Camp State Park

The park has a natural watershed along the shores of San Francisco Bay. Features include an extensive intertidal salt marsh, meadow and oak habitats, that are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, squirrels and numerous birds.

A Chinese shrimp-fishing village thrived on this site in the 1880s. Nearly 500 people, originally from Canton, China, lived in the village. In its heyday, there were three general stores, a marine supply store and a barber shop.

Fisherman by trade in their native country, they gravitated to the work they knew best. Over 90% of the shrimp they netted were dried and shipped to China or Chinese communities throughout the US.

Hopefully you've watched Episode Two, and have a basic understanding of "how" the relationship between bikers and crew will function. Here's what we are looking for: A small group of bicyclists - already planning to ride coast to coast (west to east), preferably along Adventure Cycling's Northern Route, during the months June & July of this year. The less money you have as a group: the better. The more you are fundamentally opposed to staying in hotels and hitching rides: the better. So, how does this work? Easy - simply introduce yourself. You can do this by sending an email. You can write a blog post and leave a link in the comments of this site. You can use your friend's camera to post a video on Blip.tv, Revver or YouTube. Contact us through Pedal's mySpace. Be creative. This process is simply an introduction. The more you include - the better for starting a conversation. The deadline for introductions is May 1st. (Note: I should make it clear that Pedal is not a safety net... meaning Pedal will not be financially involved or supportive in anyone's travels. We are merely searching for people who are comfortable in being tailed - as unobtrusively as possible, of course.)
