Chinese New Year Jan. 27-29, 2006

"Festival's got it all to amaze and amuse," announces the Toronto Star headline. It further says, "The three days event boasts ancient art and modern fun."

Yes, we are back to celebrate Lunar New Year. 2006 will be year 4704, according to our ancient calendar, and it will be the year of the Dog!

Our original Chinese theme has expanded to include other Asian communities that celebrate the Lunar New Year, such as: Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Laos and also Chinese-speaking communities from Philippines, Indonesia, India, Singapore, Malaysia and others.

Let us celebrate together. Let Toronto celebrates Lunar New Year!
Tags: chinese new year, chinese, eastern, year of the dog, 4704, kids, families, culture, china, asian, decorations, festival, celebration, chinatown

Map this on Platial
In 1898, the Chinese lion and dragon procession were regarded as one of the most beautiful units in the City's Annual La Fiesta Parade. After the Vietnam War in 1975, Indo-Chinese refugees poured into the United States and soon became active in our community. Local family associations, Buddhist temples, and community-based organizations mushroomed and the parade became a focal point for community participation. Without a doubt, the Golden Dragon Parade is the highlight of the Chinese New Year in Southern California.
Parade starts at main Street and New High Street, then turns left up W Cesar chavez Ave, turning right on N Broadway, where it hits it's longest stride. It turns left on Bernard St and wraps back around to end at Hill Street between Alpine and Ord.
Tags: chinese new year, chinese, eastern, year of the dog, 4704, kids, families, culture, china, asian, decorations, festival, celebration, parade, chinatown

Map this on Platial
From Wikipedia: The 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests (Tiananmen Square Massacre or June 4th Massacre or 6/4 Incident), were a series of student-led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989. The protest, denouncing China's economic instability and political corruption, was violently suppressed by armed soldiers ordered into Beijing by the PRC government.
Although student protests had been occurring for over a year, the famous protest began in mid-April 1989. It was triggered by the death of Hu Yaobang, the general secretary of the CCP between 1981 and 1987. Hu was forced to resign by Deng Xiaoping because of his soft attitude toward the student unrest in 1986. He was widely respected among students and intellectuals. Photo: "The Unknown Rebel" — This famous photo, taken by Associated Press photographer Jeff Widener, depicts a lone protester whose actions halted the progress of a column of advancing tanks for over half an hour.
Tags: china, protest, tiananmen, 7000 civilians killed, beijing

Map this on Platial

During World War II, Ono claims her family survived the bombing of Tokyo in an underground shelter. Ono and her siblings fled to the countryside, and were forced to beg for food while pulling their belongings in a wheelbarrow; it was during this period in her life that Ono claims she developed her "aggressive" attitude and that local children taunted the once well-to-do Yoko and her brother, now reduced to poverty. Her father remained in the city and, unbeknownst to them, was incarcerated in a prisoner of war camp in China.
Tags: pow, yoko ono, wwii, china, japan

Map this on Platial

Feb 2, 20,000,000 Jobless in China, Let's Break our Dependency

World economic turmoil has caused tens of thousands, and now a few million to be without jobs in Europe and the US. If the west has less money to spend and is trying to make every dollar stretch, then are we putting people who get paid dirt to make our happy meal toys out of jobs? The answer is yes.

H5N1 death Male 19yo 03/06/2007

GENEVA, June 4 (Reuters) - A Chinese soldier has died from bird flu, taking the death toll from the virus in the world's most populous country to 16, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday.

The United Nations health agency quoted China's Ministry of Health as saying the 19-year-old male soldier, who was serving in the southeastern province of Fujian, died on June 3.

The soldier, surnamed Cheng, was diagnosed with the H5N1 virus on May 18 and had been receiving treatment at a military hospital.

China has had 25 laboratory-confirmed cases of bird flu, but this is the first death to be reported since March. Worldwide the virus has killed 188 people out of 309 known cases since it re-emerged in Hong Kong in 2003.
Tags: china, bird flu, h5n1

Map this on Platial

An exhibition by Shaolin monks

[May 10, 2005] My pictures from the Songshan Shaolin exhibition turned out better than I expected. In the above photo, a monk is balanced on the points of six spears, and they didn't break his skin. It was insane.

There were 18 monks in this exhibition, ranging in ages from 5 to 22 (yes, they're all younger than me. It was humbling. Like most things in my life), plus their grandmaster, who did some incredibly badass feats. In fact, they all did incredibly badass feats.

Like doing handstands, using only two fingers... and then doing one-handed handstands, using only two fingers.

The coolest part was that the youngest monks... were 5-year-old triplets. The Shaolin Triplets. They were not only badass, they were adorable too -- kind of shy when they first came out on stage, and then way cool when they started doing things. They did headsprings. People did lots of headspings in this show. They also leaned over and planted their heads on the ground... and then walked around them spinning their bodies, keeping their heads planted on the stage.

There were lots of weapons demonstrations, and animal-style demonstrations. There was a guy who demonstrated drunken boxing, and then drunken sword fighting, and then drunken staff fighting. There were kip-ups in every single demonstration. They did lots of flips and tucks and cartwheels and stuff, all right out of my gymnastics class -- except they never landed on their feet, they always landed on their backs, which was a little odd.

The grandmaster did demonstrations where big, burly men in the audience would get a chance to try to hurt him. He took repeated kicks to the crotch from very large men, and chain-punches to the stomach... and then the monks brought in a battering ram, and a bunch of them rammed it into his stomach a lot. The Shaolin Triplets did a 'shell game,' where kids from the audience had to close their eyes while the three kids ran around and rearranged themselves, and then the kids had to guess which of the three was which. And there was a really cheezy computer animated video accompanying it, and a very '80s World music soundtrack. So in addition to being extremely badass, it was also extremely exploitative.

Afterwards, they signed autographs and posed for pictures... and my friend Japalino was totally crushing on her 'dreamboat monk' (which was the coolest thing ever -- my friend had a crush on a monk! A monk who could kick your ass!). And I was thinking...

This is a bunch of monks, from China. And here they are, in the West, encountering women who wear less clothing than they've ever seen, and getting treated like rockstars.

How weird must that be?
Tags: kung fu, china, martial arts, honolulu, hawaii, blog, awesome, stories, shaolin, badass

Map this on Platial

Lippo Center

        Bond Center (Now Lippo Center)
Hong Kong, China
1984-1988

“Hong Kong is an entirely different project. It is interesting in that it's being built on somebody else's foundations, and, therefore, the planning of Hong Kong is determined by foundations already poured in place. The owners changed because of the relationship with Red China and everybody got scared. They are totally commercial office buildings, unlike Jakarta, and therefore the ground rules are very different. Also there are a multiplicity of owners, unlike Dharmala, which is a corporate headquarters. It is like home to them, and, therefore, they take great interest in it. It's not that they don't take an interest in the Hong Kong projects. It's just that the ground rules are very, very different, about what you can and cannot do. The Hong Kong project is two towers and I wanted to connect them with interlacing bridges. I don't know whether you've ever seen any of those sketches or not. They wouldn't let me do that. The reason for that was the prime developer/owner said that he made a substantial part of his fortune in textiles in Indonesia as a matter of fact. He said all of his factories had interconnecting bridges that take material and people from one part to the other. He didn't want these office buildings to look like that. I was really disappointed. I couldn't get around that argument though I did try.”

Since announcing its intent to comply with Internet censorship laws in the People's Republic of China, Google China has been the focus of controversy over what critics view as capitulation to the "Golden Shield Project" (also known as the Great Firewall of China). Because of its self-imposed censorship, whenever people search for interdicted Chinese keywords on a blocked list maintained by the PRC government, google.cn will display the following at the bottom of the page (translated): In accordance with local laws, regulations and policies, part of the search result is not shown.
Tags: china, firewall, cencorship

Map this on Platial
