Life saving cardiac surgery, Donetsk, Ukraine

We funded heart surgeries in Kharkiv in May/June 2008. November 16 - 22, 2008 we are headed to Donetsk. Every year over 6000 children are born in Ukraine with genetic heart disease, a dramatic increase since the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986. Over half of these will not receive the surgery they need to survive. Our program works because we combine life saving surgeries with local training, so that Ukrainian surgeons in rural areas can build expertise to save the youngest and most complicated cases. We plan three more surgical missions to Ukraine thorough the end of 2008, and we hope -- with your support -- to continue the program in 2009. Visit our marker in Minsk, Belarus to learn more about the program.
Tags: children, heart, cardiac, chernobyl, ccpi, donetsk

Map this on Platial

Life saving kid's heart surgeries

Chernobyl Children's Project International has funded lifesaving cardiac surgeries for hundreds of kids in Belarus at the National Children's Cardiac Center. Training and professional development of local physicians is an important part of the program ... this means that your donations not only save lives during surgical missions, but contribute to the training of local medics so that lives can be saved year round. As always, our long term objective is to create self-sufficiency, not dependency.

In May 2008, we sent a volunteer surgical team to Kharkiv, Ukraine, where 17 young lives were saved. Through the end of 2008, we will send three more teams to Odessa, Donetsk and Kyiv for surgical and training visits.

When we started our program in Belarus, more than 7000 children were on the waiting list for surgeries . . . now that number is down about 2400. We hope to duplicate this success in Ukraine, where 6000 children are born every year with genetic heart disease.
Tags: children, heart, cardiac, chernobyl, Minsk

Map this on Platial

        A landmark in Piraeus.
The Hatzikyriakio has been doing valuable work for children, for many decades now. It's a recognized institution well known throughout Greece.

The wider area of Hatzikyriakio is one of the most (if not THE most) recognized places in Piraeus. Close to where large cruiser ships dock, sung in many "rebetika songs". It is now one of the most densely populated areas in Piraeus.
Tags: children, institution, community

Map this on Platial
World-class botanical gardens includes cactus garden, Australian garden, Japanese garden, roses, herbs, Shakespeare garden and much more. Chinese garden coming soon! The tearoom (reservations recommended) is wonderful, though not as charming as it was before Sodexho took it over. (My advice: Dim the lights! Put some music on!) Great art collection, library (for scholars) and gift shop. A wonderful way to spend a relaxing day. Visiting this convinced me that Southern California was actually a pretty place the first time I saw it over 20 years ago. Don't miss the new Children's Garden, even if you don't have kids. It's full of whimsical plants and water creations.
Tags: garden, gardens, san marino, pasadena, museum, museums, botanical, roses, australian, chinese, tea, restaurant, art, cacti, cactus, japanese, tearoom, cafe, restaurants, gifts, books, bookstore, giftshop, children, kid, kids, childrens

Map this on Platial

First Annual "Drive The Bus" World Music & Festival -
produced by Gigi, Tropic Heat Studios and StormFront Records, Storm Front Music, BMI ~ one Island woman's vision.
"I'm a 4th generation Virgin Islander - homesick. Our culture is..diverse and united at once - everyone's on the
same rock - so we create celebrations that bring the flavor of each and every culture to the table - dancing, music, cultural exhibits, vendors, adults, children, a few donkeys too and chickens, goats :-) If it rains, there's usually a rainbow. If it pours, we thank God for the rainwater that fills our wells/cisterns and nourishes the fruit and flowers of our island. And we dance in the rain.
In honor of the spirit of cultural diversity that allows all of us to express and experience the adventure that life on this planet were meant to be...I'm throwing a party. My kind of party - a peace party, a family and friends party, a come and meet us party....relax, chill-out, laugh, dance, or just sit and watch the shows and meet....new friends.
Welcome to my new home...Chattanooga ~ the best of all worlds I have seen along the way, the place I've chosen - not just because of the beauty of this place - but mostly, because of the beauty of the people here. A place I like to say, "has hope"...I found it here, and I rediscover it daily......here. And I expect you will too -
Your "Drive The Bus" (Be a Leader) hostess,
Gigi
Tags: video, children, arts, music, event, film, family, festival, culture, families, peace, world music, historic village

Map this on Platial

Tree House Books

Tree House Books is a 4,200 square foot general bookstore situated in downtown Holland, Michigan, on the Victorian-styled main street listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tree House Books opened its doors in February 2003 with three goals in mind: to provide a haven of comfort for those browsers who love to peruse an eclectic bookshelf, to create a sense of community within its walls where ideas and knowledge are shared, and to establish the missing link of modern retail, connection with another human being.

Tree House Books has a selection of over 12,000 adult and children's book titles, a wide selection of journals, stationary, greeting cards, gifts, toys, puzzles, and plush. Monthly events include story time, author signings, book clubs, poetry readings, character visits, and seminars.

Owner Michele Lonergan provides outreach programs to schools and churches. She also appears on "Book Talk," on local radio promoting hot new reads. Tree House Books was recently awarded the designation of "Best Bookstore" in West Michigan by readers of Lake Magazine, a periodical covering the lakeshore from Chicago to Muskegon.
Tags: browse, haven, share knowledge, plush, puxxles, stationary, stroy time, book club, author signings, seminars, michele lonergan, book talk, best book store, award winning, eclectic, connection, toys, gifts, cards, journals, books, events, poetry reading, childrens books, children, community, author events, independent bookseller, great lakes booksellers assocation, downtown holland, glba

Map this on Platial

Normandy Park Playground

        Location:
2484 East County Road F
White Bear Lake, MN 55110

A beautiful little park in White Bear Lake designed specifically for kids 1-5 years of age. Affiliated with Normandy Park Education Center so during school hours accessibility is hit or miss, but it is a perfect place for fun on evenings and weekends as well as non-school days. It is fenced in and has a well-padded play surface with lots of climbing equipment. It is located on the corner of Bellaire Avenue and County Rd F on the East side of White Bear Lake.

The only negatives here are that the trees are new, and there is very little shade, but that's not unusual. There are some picnic tables by the school, so picnics are possible, but they are outside the gated park.

The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is basically a park to beat all parks. The 12-acre farm, which was named in honor of an Overland Park police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1985, offers the opportunity to observe and feed a variety of animals, and has a fishing pond stocked with hybrid bluegill and catfish. There are several playgrounds throughout the farm, and a garden area maintained by the Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners. Read more.

Gigantic, destination zoos that take all day to explore (ala the Kansas City Zoo) have their place, and are undoubtedly impressive.
The Sensory Garden

        By Karen Matheis

One Saturday morning, I happened to take a different route on a morning run. I noticed a quaint and tidy little garden off to the side of Audio Reader that I hadn't ever seen. What an interesting find.

The garden is not very large, but contains many different types of plants that are labeled to include Braille. Although all can enjoy the garden, it is designed for non-seeing and non-hearing people in mind. Visitors can feel the textures of the plants that are near a hand's touch and hear or feel the wind chimes that have different tones.

The Kansas Museum of History

If you're not a history buff, a visit to the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka may not be very high on your list of things to do. It's time to revise that list.

The Kansas Museum of History has enough to keep a family entertained for the better part of the day. Before even entering the building, kids can play on the large play structure that is fashioned after a grain elevator. A winding staircase leads to the top of the elevator where a series of slides then leads them into the bed of a pick-up truck. Read more.
Tags: children, family, kids, history, museums

Map this on Platial

Sun Fire Ceramics

Sun Fire Ceramics is a "paint-it-yourself" studio that allows you to pick an item (a mug, plate, statue, mirror, etc.), paint it, and leave it behind to be fired and picked up a few days later.

It's worth doing, if for no other reason than it gives the kids a chance to take pride in something they've created. It also supports a local business that's been a staple of the downtown scene for nearly a decade. But parents, if you're going to go, you should know what you're getting into.
