Los Gatos, CA

Los Gatos is located in the South Bay part of the San Francisco Bay Area, near San Jose. The town can be found just off Highway 17 (known as "the hill" to locals) as the highway begins to climb into the Santa Cruz mountains. Homes are mostly upscale, varying from million-dollar cottages in the village itself to large custom homes in the surrounding hills. The town is noted for its upscale but small-town downtown, with many chic shops and restaurants. It is also a preferred destination for antique shoppers.
Tags: gatos, cats, california, los gatos, santa cruz

Map this on Platial

Raina's former L.E.S apt with the shower in the kitchen

this is my former apartment; it was one of those typically Manhattan places with exposed pipes and... strange, cramped, with a shower in the living room! Yes, my shower was adjacent to my range, and next to the kitchen sink, and if i wanted to, shower and saute at the same time! There was also no good place for Acorn's litter box, so I'd put it in the shower, and take it out every time i wanted to bathe. Hence the show would smell like cat poo. Even though it was tiny, I liked the feel of the apartment; it had lots of light, roof access (top floor), it was the "penthouse" so to speak. In the summertime most of the residents, mostly older chinese women and their grandchildren, would leave their doors open and lights off throuhout the day. I could see clear through their entire apartments; they had peeling linoleum floors and walls packed with crap. Their places were darker, seemingly smaller, and unrenovated than mine, which had had new floors, a newish kitchen, and repainted walls. I had 2 a/c units (by accident), modern furniture and lived alone; Other people in my building didn't have A/C, and keeping the doors open would help circulate air, kitchen smells, and basically add another of "window" to the tiny apartments. Apartments that they shared with their entire families just like the immigrants who had lives in these same tenements (with 5-10 people per apartment) a hundred years before. As a Chinese American young profession, I'd wonder how as Chinese people our lives in America could be world different. Still do.

Walking up the stairs, I'd smell my neighbors cooking their dinners for their grandchildren and wished they'd ask me over. I'd also pass the single Latino gentleman on the third floor, and would hear music lessons; in his packed apartment I could see an upright piano, a computer desk, and a bed. I'd sometimes see him teaching the neighborhood Chinese kids guitar. When I'd open my apartment door sometimes Acorn would rush out into the bonsai lady's apartment across the way who's door was open. In the summer, all she would do in the daytime was lay on her bed, with the lights off, fanning herself, int his tiny studio apartment filled with minuature trees.

Though now i live a few blocks south of Canal, not too far away in a nicer, larger unit, I miss Orchard St a little. When my friend Erin would stay over after a late night of drinks and dancing to Morrissey, we'd come back and she'd sleep on the couch, i'd sleep in mybed, and we'd talk until we fell asleep. We'd talk also while I was in bed and she was taking a shower too. In that apartment two people would always be right next to each other. Proximity brings people together, its true. Ever wonder why its always so fun to be confined in a small space with lots of people, like a slumber party? In my new place, Erin sleeps on my couch but is a good ten feet down the hall. I have to practically yodal her my secrets.
Tags: cats, studio, lower east side, les, tiny apartments, weird apartments, manhattan apartments, cat owner, chinese american, tenement, orchard street

Map this on Platial
Somewhere on a lonely stretch of highway approaching tampa, I snapped this pic of my grandmother's cat, Smokey, riding shotgun on the dashboard and high on kittykat valium. Turns out I gave her a double dose (a whole pill, rather than a half) by accident, and her back legs didn't work right for the next few days. We were driving grandma's van from Maine to Florida, so having Smokey extra-chillaxed for the two days of driving really didn't hurt.
Tags: cats, cat, kitties, drugs, kitty, valium, stoned

Map this on Platial

I'm lonely and scared and I don't hate her as much as I thought

I moved about 2,200 miles across country, from Michigan to California, driving three and a half days with my dad and three cats in their own separate car carriers. Each day, I'd start the trip with catching the cats and getting them in the carriers. Two were scared enough they didn't put up much of a fight. The third put up a fight every time. Then I spent the next hour of the drive listening to them cry, and trying to calm down the most vocal by putting his carrier on my lap. Each night, I'd set up their food and a disposable litter box and let them out. They never went to the bathroom in their carriers. When we finally got to my new apartment, I opened their carriers in a bedroom and closed the door. I started unloading stuff, came back, and saw two of my cats in the same carrier. Ziggy, who is a very fat cat, managed to squeeze himself into the carrier with Stinky, an elderly, thin cat. They normally hate each other, but I guess they were both so upset and scared they needed some companionship. I guess oil and water mix if they've been agitated for three and a half days.
Tags: cats, travel, animals, ziggy, furry, stinky, cat carrier, unlikely pair

Map this on Platial

Kuching

Eric and I did a lot of field work in Sarawak as well as Sabah. Kuching was a pretty cool, but fairly rustic city. I found it to be much more authentic than most of Asia, although that was in 1986, so for all I know it has been overrun by Starbucks and McDonalds at this point.

The people were totally cool and friendly. The Karst topography of the limestone makes it a really magical place. If you venture "upriver" or out into the bush, it gets really wild, really fast. Monkeys and poisonous snakes abound. Sarawak was the last place to have known cannibals and it is still reported to have a tribe or two that is known to conviently have an enemy disappear in a pot of gumbo.

There is a great book called Stranger in the Forest : On Foot Across Borneo (Vintage Departures) by Eric Hansen. Highly recommended.

Pet the Infestation!

The University of Hawaii Manoa is infested with feral cats, just like the rest of Hawaii. I find cats to be a nice decorative element. To me, cats on the premises says: Somebody lives here. When I walk around Chinatown and see a random cat stuck on a roof, I go "Oh, how nice! People live here! These aren't really stores, they're all secretly homes, and people live in them!" When I walk around UH (which is properly pronounced "Uhhhh...", if I may remind you) and see random cats, I go "Ah, cats! This is not truly a university! It's just a big house where people live! I like it here."

A friend who's visiting from school in Vancouver, B.C. told me about the infestations at the schools in Canada. The University of British Columbia is infested with squirrels. Some of them are alright, but the black ones look a lot like rats.

The University of Victoria, UVic, is infested with bunnies.

It's the cutest infestation ever, I am told.

Except that they have to kill large numbers of the bunnies at random every year, to keep the inbreeding down. Otherwise, the infestation starts looking kind of weird. When a guy from UVic who was also at the hostel on 'reading break' (the Canadian Spring Break) told me this, I imagined two-heads mutant monster rabbits hopping to and fro around campus, and I had to sit down, because I was laughing so hard there was no spare energy in my body to keep my leg muscles operating. Turns out they just start looking kind of mangy, their coats get pretty ugly. Ah well.
Tags: cats, infestation, anecdotes, feral, feral cats

Map this on Platial
