        In 2003, Pine Manor College celebrated the 16th anniversary of the Hess Gallery, distinguished both as a showcase for contemporary New England artists and as a beautiful exhibition space for students’ work.</p><p>Inspired by art faculty members, the gallery originally was situated in the old single-carriage house on campus. Through the generosity of Class of 1964 alumna Christine Hess Williams and her father, Leon, it moved in 1971 to its present home on the first floor of the Annenberg Library building.         Since 1984, Edward Leung dreamed of building a food empire. He worked previously as an accountant, waiter and chef. He devoted much time and energy in following his father’s footsteps to learn cooking skills, discover his potential, develop concepts, and, above all, listen to the needs of his customers. He started his first restaurant business over 22 years ago.</p><p>Today, Edward owns and operates East Ocean Enterprises, Limited and five specialized restaurants: the East Ocean City Seafood Restaurant in Boston’s Chinatown (since 1991), Fugakyu Japanese Cuisine in Brookline (since 1998), Fugakyu Japanese Café in Sudbury (since 2000), Kaze Shabu Shabu Restaurant in Chinatown (since 2005) and Imperial Seafood Dim Sum Restaurant in Chinatown (since 2005).</p><p>The restaurants are continually expanded and modified so that each maintains a unique style of its own. <title>The Coolidge Corner Theater</title>

        Since the 1910's, movie theater spectators had been trying to get a foothold in Brookline Old-fashioned and independent-minded Brookline, which had continuously resisted annexation to Boston, also resisted the intrusion of the movie industry. Various zoning and financial obstacles impede efforts to establish a movie theatre in the town until 1933, when the Beacon Universalist Church leased its property to Morris Sharaf and Joseph and Max Levenson of the Harvard Amusement Co., an offshoot of the Strand Theatre chain. It is illustrated here in a pen and ink drawing of the theater as it looked during the 1930s.</p><p>Extensive renovations by local laborers and contractors, following architect Ernest Hayward's designs transformed the church into a modern movie theatre and ushered in what the Brookline Chronicle described as &quot;a real chapter in the life of the town.&quot;</p><p>On December 30, 1933, Brookline's first movie theatre opened with a gala ceremony including speeches by local politicians and businessmen, the distribution of souvenirs, and a showing of Only Yesterday, Saturday's Millions, a Disney short, and &quot;a series of local pictures taken especially for the occasion.&quot;</p><p>At this time in the history of the American cinema, grand movie palaces were becoming less commercially viable, and Depression-era movie audiences demanded more moderate movie houses in their own neighborhoods, theatres built specifically as showcases for the mov<br/>Tags: the coolidge corner theater, brookline, events, reviews<br /><br /><a href="http://www.platial.com/post/1034184">Map this on Platial</a><br />
