If you're in decent shape and want to bike San Juan Island, this is the place to rent a bike. They provide an emergency kit, tire pump, and helmet along with the bike. Depending on the bike you choose, rentals cost $35-70 a day. The island does not have bike trails; you will be biking on the side of the road as cars wizz past, so this may not be a smart activity for families with small children.

Stanley Park - Urban Oasis!

The absolute highlight of Vancouver! We spent an entire day here, walking the seawall promenande from the north side of the city and around to the crowded beaches on the south side. Sane people should elect to use the park's bus system or rent some bikes to get around, but if you have all day to linger, walking isn't too bad. Just make sure you have a picnic packed, as there is no way up to the restaurants on Prospect Point from the promenade. (We ended up surviving on a lunch of granola bars...and if you're diabetic or hypoglycemic like we are, this is a very foolish strategy...in our defense the map can be misleading!) Along the way we saw totem poles, a cannon used as a clock, locals enjoying a cricket match, the Vancouver Aquarium, lighthouses, beautiful vistas, exotic boats (one looked like it was an old Chinese trading ship from the 1800s), and locals fishing. Pack your swimming suit and towel to join the locals at the crowded beaches at the end of your walk. This park offers something for everyone.

We drove from the campsite on Mineral Road to the parking lot of the visitor center (we wanted to avoid riding on the gravel road from the campground and also wanted to extend the ride as much as possible). Free & easy parking & bathrooms! Our ride this day was the best of the 2. We rode to the top of Red Mountain Pass from downtown Silverton. We contemplated descending towards Ouray, but we were less sure of the conditions on that side of the pass. Great ride--nice long climb, beautiful views. Some exposure on Red Mountain pass, but not as much as the Molas Pass Ride (really, just a short section). Descent was on the inside (enclosed) side. Drivers both days were extremely respectful; there was only one vehicle, an RV, that felt like it came too close.

Nice park with easy hikes and great views. Has both open spaces and forested areas.
