There are three full courts and two half courts in the lower area. There are three full courts in the upper area. Many of the hoops are not regulation. Some of them don't have rims at all. And only a couple have functioning cotton nets. That being said, you will never have trouble finding an open hoop. That's because you will NEVER find a game here. Maybe the occasional 1-on-1, but that's it. The primary reason to shoot here is solitude and a world class view of the ocean and the verdant environs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. School is in session Monday-Friday, so you can't shoot here until after about 4:00 p.m. or 3:45 at the earliest. The area is typically lousy with soccer and baseball dads and their progeny. Occasional geriatric dog walkers. Ample free parking. A water fountain down inside the school courtyard. The courts here are not lit and there is not even sufficient ambient light to shoot in semidarkness, so when the sun sets, you're done. There is also convenient beach access and a scenic overlook of Redondo Beach area.

Two full courts, four regulation hoops with cotton nets. Lights stay on until 9 p.m. Best times to catch pick-up games are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday about 6:30 p.m. Ample parking is free. A water fountain is available featuring LA's finest perchlorate-enhanced drinking water. In the short term perchlorate will help you jump higher (it's rocket fuel!). In the long term, it will shrink your testes, grow a tentacle-like appendage from your forehead, and cause you to die an excrutiating death not unlike the one experienced by Emil in the 1987 Peter Weller vehicle Robocop. Faustian bargain? Sure. Small price to pay, really, when you consider you'll be able to DUNK A BASKETBALL.

Four regulation hoops with cotton nets. The two courts are full court in as much as the baskets face opposite each other, but the length and width of the courts are rather tiny. Basically, you get a rebound, turn around and you're at the other end of the court. Very cramped. Tends to encourage a single end-to-end pass, lazy defense, and mid-range jumpshots. The courts don't really support 5-on-5, but people insist on playing it anyway. Lights stay on until 9 p.m. Best time for games are weeknights. A lot of high schoolers seem to "run" (well, turn around and hoist J's) there. Ample free parking. Water fountain.

One very nice full court and four half courts with cotton nets. Lights stay on until 9:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and until 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (although the park staff always try to weasel in 15-30 minutes early to shut the courts down if they want to get home to catch "Everwood" or some fucking thing). They actually lock all of the hoops with "the club," so you can't shoot after the lights go out. They'll also lock down at the first drop of rain (WTF?!). You can do what I do and harass them into allowing you to shoot until the actual closing time if you don't mind them standing around making surly remarks (I don't). I've never menaced them with my Ace in the Hole, namely that my cousin works for the city of Manhattan Beach and I could have their asses with just a single phone call. A SINGLE CALL! I'm a mover and a shaker. I'm also sort of a Quaker. With an ankle-breaking crossover. Kids, finish your oatmeal! Best time to find game is Tuesday-Thursday 6:00-8:00 p.m.

You wouldn't know this park was here unless someone pointed it out for you on the Internets. From the street the signage leads one to believe it's a private tennis club or something. Actually, it's a beautiful park with baseball diamond, horse track, tennis courts, playground, and basketball court. The court is a lovely full court with two regulation hoops and freshly laundered cotton nets which no doubt smell like lilac and a hint of peppermint. The court is next to a volleyball sandpit so sometimes the sand on the concrete surface can make for treacherous conditions. The traffic on this court tends to run to middle schoolers, toddlers, and soccer moms. You won't find any game here. Almost always abandoned. However, the setting is tranquil and lousy with trees and other greenery. Restrooms, water fountain, and free parking are available. The court is not lit. Sometimes this place smells like horse doody. It won't mess up your J though.

1966. Bill Russell, one of the greatest defensive centres in the history of basketball, becomes the first black coach of a major professional sports team (the Boston Celtics) in the United States. Reared in Oakland, Calif., Russell led the University of San Francisco to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in two consecutive seasons (1954-55 and 1955-56). After playing on the U.S. team that won the 1956 Olympic basketball gold medal in Melbourne, he joined the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). With Russell at centre, the Celtics won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He coached the last two of those championship teams but retired as coach in 1969. On five occasions Russell was voted the most valuable player in the NBA. In 1967 the Associated Press named him one of the five members of its All-America collegiate team for the preceding 20 years; later the AP selected him the outstanding professional basketball player of the 1960s. He was coach and general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics (1973–77). His autobiography, Second Wind: The Memoirs of an Opinionated Man, was published in 1979. Laguna Beach's two-acre waterfront park is linked to Heisler Park, a two-mile greenway that runs along the bluffs of the coastline. The Broadway intersection is a focal point with lots of pedestrian traffic. There are 30 art galleries, antique shops and boutiques, The Crawl of pubs, and fine restaurants. The Main Street and small town atmosphere here makes it a great public gathering space where the personalities are rich - not always admirable, of course, but rich.

There are two separate courts here. One is two full courts, four hoops total. The other is one full court. All are regulation and have cotton nets. The courts are usually active. Very easy to find a game of 21 or 2-on-2. Often there is a full court game going as well with very little wait time. Saturday 12:00-6:00 seems to be a good time, but also weekdays after 4:00 p.m. The park is near SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupational Center) so there always seem to be college age chuckers milling about or futzing around on the courts. There is a water fountain, ample free parking, and a bathroom nearby. Courts get standing water on them even after a moderate rain. The courts are not lit though the ambient light is sufficient to shoot after dark.

1987. Basketball forward Julius Erving, noted for his balletic leaps toward the basket and climactic slam dunks, retires after becoming the third professional player to score a career total of 30,000 points. While playing in high school Erving won an athletic scholarship to the University of Massachusetts. In three seasons there he became one of only seven players ever to average more than 20 points and 20 rebounds per game in a collegiate career. He was still generally unknown, however, when he joined the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1971. He was traded to the New York Nets two years later. In his five seasons in the ABA, Erving led the league in scoring three times, was the league's Most Valuable Player in its last three years, and led the Nets to championships in 1974 and 1976. When the ABA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Nets traded Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers. Erving led the 76ers to the NBA finals four times in seven years, including their 1983 championship win. He was voted the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1981. In 1980 he was one of 11 players named to the NBA's 35th-anniversary All-Time Team. He retired in 1987 after having become the third professional player to have scored a career total of 30,000 points.
