I'm lonely and scared and I don't hate her as much as I thought

I moved about 2,200 miles across country, from Michigan to California, driving three and a half days with my dad and three cats in their own separate car carriers. Each day, I'd start the trip with catching the cats and getting them in the carriers. Two were scared enough they didn't put up much of a fight. The third put up a fight every time. Then I spent the next hour of the drive listening to them cry, and trying to calm down the most vocal by putting his carrier on my lap. Each night, I'd set up their food and a disposable litter box and let them out. They never went to the bathroom in their carriers. When we finally got to my new apartment, I opened their carriers in a bedroom and closed the door. I started unloading stuff, came back, and saw two of my cats in the same carrier. Ziggy, who is a very fat cat, managed to squeeze himself into the carrier with Stinky, an elderly, thin cat. They normally hate each other, but I guess they were both so upset and scared they needed some companionship. I guess oil and water mix if they've been agitated for three and a half days.
Tags: cats, ziggy, furry, travel, animals, stinky, cat carrier, unlikely pair

Map this on Platial

Rock Doves (AKA: Squab or Pigeons)

While waiting for one of the SEPTA trains you can look up into the roof over the platform and see a large balloon with a target-like image on it's side. This is a tool for scaring away birds. It's supposed to frighten all non-birds-of-prey. It amuses me to see it up there, spotted with bird poop, obviously not working. The reason it does not work is because it's built to imitate the markings of a bird of prey. However, the Squab in the train station have never seen, much less been attacked by, a hawk or an owl. So, the big balloon with the taget on it's side is just that - a big balloon with a target on it's side. A couple of hunters using trained hawks to reduce the rock dove population would be far more affective.
Tags: pigeon, rock dove, squab, train station, philadelphia, birds, animals

Map this on Platial
However, anyone who has every visited one of these big-daddy zoos with young kids knows that enough is enough. Acres of simulated African savanah are great for the lions, but they're hell to trek through with tired kids on a hot day.Read more.
Tags: children, zoo, animals, kids, parks, playgrounds

Map this on Platial
Looking for an animal fix, but not quite up for the zoo? Take the family to Pet World.

Sure, it's just a pet store, but between the giant tortoises, the talking birds, the gallery of reptiles, the aquarium room, and the furry rabbits, it's easy to spend an hour just looking around.Read more.
Tags: children, animals, family, kids, food

Map this on Platial

[September 22, 2006] Last night six of us from the hostel took a field trip to the northwest, to see the largest colony of Vaux's Swifts in the world.

If you click on that photo, those little black specks you see? Those are birds. Somewhere around 20,000 of them, who live in the chimney of Chapman Elementary School every September as they migrate south. Every evening in September, as the sun is setting, they gather around the chimney, and after flying all the fuck around for a while, they fly down the chimney to roost for the night, spiraling down into it like a whirlpool of birds.

Lots of people come to watch the Swifts every night.

Turtle Beach... I think

The locals call this spot Turtle Beach, because so many sea turtles sun themselves there. The turtles are a protected species, and it's a $10,000 fine if you touch one.

"I'm a protected species," said the little old German woman on the tour bus.

Ipswich River, Mass Audubon’s largest sanctuary, offers more than 10 miles of interconnecting trails that invite you to explore the forests, meadows, and wetlands. Canoe along eight miles of the Ipswich River that run through the sanctuary and camp on Perkins Island, located a half-mile up the river (members can rent canoes from May through October). Members can also rent a cabin that is conveniently located close to the sanctuary’s office and program facilities and sleeps four. In April, listen for the chorus of American toads and pickerel frogs. Watch for river otters, painted turtles, and great blue herons at various times throughout the year. Climb the drumlin and esker, landscape features created by a glacier 15,000 years ago. Huge rocks and exotic trees and shrubs that were part of a former arboretum provide an adventurous walk along the Rockery Trail. This sanctuary has the following universally accessible facilities: Restrooms, Barn, Education Center.
