Tower Theatre

This small independent theater opened in 1938 and is, according to their website, "dedicated to bringing the finest in independent, foreign and specialty film to Sacramento's film lovers".

I love this place. The theaters are small, intimate, and full of character. I love everything from the uneven floors to the bizarrely tall appearance of the rooms.

The Tower Cafe is right next door. The atmosphere is fantastic, making it a great place to just sit and have a drink, if nothing else. Sweet pastries seem to be one of their speacialties. Apparently the french toast is marvelous, but I've never tried it.

The theater could be in trouble if too many new movie screens open downtown. If you're a Sac area film lover, please give this place your business and visit http://www.savethetowertheatre.org/index.html
Tags: movies, architecture, historic, movie theater

Map this on Platial

Crest Theatre

The Crest is one of several historic movie theaters in Sacramento. This venue also frequently hosts concerts, lectures, and other live events since the individual theaters within are very big and can accommodate that sort of thing.
Films shown in this place are generally the artsy indie type. I love going to movies here because the ticket prices are actually less expensive than any of the regular corporate theaters nearby. Totally awesome!

The Crest Cafe is right next door. (I've never tried it.)
Tags: movies, theater, theatre, concerts, architecture, independent, historic, live events

Map this on Platial

Eccentric Craigdarroch Castle

A quirky and fascinating mansion built by a Canadian robber baron in the 1880s. The house is enormous, and the rooms are exquisite and well-preserved. Anyone with a fascination for the Victorian era or antiques will be entertained. The wood work blew me away and the attic ballroom and tower room are especially thrilling. AVOID the day cruise ship groups flood the mansion. When we were there in 2006, that was Thursdays - call ahead to be sure. We ended up being pushed and elbowed by the crowds, which spoils the magic. According to the museum staff, other days you might have the place to yourself!
Tags: architecture, museums, victoria, mansions, british columbia, craigdarroch castle, robber barons

Map this on Platial

A strange hybrid of house and castle, this brick building stands forlorn on the hill overlooking the water in the Fort Worden park complex. A lovestruck gentleman built this as a home for his girl, but by the time he finished construction, she had left him for another. The house seems to know this, and stands waiting in sorrow for it's love to return. One of our favorite finds in Port Townsend.
Tags: architecture, port townsend, fort worden

Map this on Platial
Built on the site of the former university chapel, this building serves as a cultural hub for the university with a Sancutary, Chapel, Meeting Rooms and Choir areas.
IBM Building

"Paul Rudolph's IBM building at East Fishkill, New York was conceived as a factory, laboratory, and headquarters for the Components Division (which no longer exists as such) - all in the same package. One of its most expensive features, a mechanical floor sandwiched between the two occupied floors (except where all three are used as offices) was a requirement of the client. In a last-minute effort at economy, the concrete sunshades were removed, leaving their stubs as reminders of a silhouette that might have been."

Sarasota High School

“The second Sarasota High School was a move from clear form, from clear structure, from lineal structural elements defining space, to the organization of planes in space. It depends much more on the space and the handling of light, which really meant planes rather than linear elements, which in turn commenced my investigations into scale… I’m affected by everything I see. I make no bones about it. I haven’t invented anything in my life. For instance, the entrance to the Sarasota High School can be traced directly to Corbusier’s High Court Building in Chandigarh.”

Bass Residence

1801 Deepdale Drive, Westover Hills, Fort Worth, TX.

"The Bass Residence is without a doubt the most ambitious residential project ever designed by Paul Rudolph. Commissioned by Anne and Sid Bass in 1970, the house accommodates a complex spatial program as well as an extensive contemporary-art collection. Because of its strong horizontal cantilevers and its white-steel and glass finishes, it has been suggested that the Bass Residence resembles a hybrid of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House. But the spatial diversity and complexity Rudolph achieved in the Bass Residence is unparalleled by either of those works."

        1033 Ponte Vedra Blvd
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082

1959-1961

"In the Milam beach house, essentially a series of platforms, the floor plane drops to form an extended conversation pit in the living area, rises to create a platform for dining, and four risers higher becomes and inglenook defined by a low parapet. The second floor plane is continuous as a floor but is interrupted to permit more than half of the living space below to extend to the roof. A mezzanine overlooking the living-dining area adds a pleasant spatial complication as does the dropped roof deck which creates a lowered ceiling over the inglenook to make a cozy group around the fire even cozier."

According to Rudolph, in this house one locates oneself according to mood. 'The inglenook offers a nest, the two story portion of the living-dining space provides a goldfish bowl, and the far end of the living area is a cave.'

Rudolph states that 'modules are not necessarily applicable to houses...the modular building concept is applied many times where it doesn’t have much meaning.'"

Umbrella Residence

        Umbrella House (Hiss Residence)
Lido Shores
Sarasota, Florida
1953-1954

"[Philip Hiss] hired Paul Rudolph to design a speculative house for his Lido Shores development 'to attract attention from the road and in the architectural journals,' according to Bill Rupp. Hiss was not disappointed: the result was a very Floridian house of temple-like quality, with a high second wood-slat roof over the lower building masses for cooling and shading. The house proper had two levels containing upper bedrooms at each end, with balconies and bridges over a two-story living-dining space that became a breezeway when opened. The slat roof continued out over a swimming pool and gazebo. Again, the structural solution was difficult to attain, but it was ultimately successful and earned much publicity. The house’s fragile lattice portion was eventually destroyed by a hurricane."

Walker Guest House

"An elongated box open on the long sides and elevated on pilotis, the Walker Residence is similar in design to the Leavengood Residence. Here, however, the screened patio space makes up nearly half of the living area, which is all on one level. From the entry side the house is lifted a full story off the ground to accommodate parking and entry underneath. It appears only slightly elevated at the water side due to the rise of the beach dune and retaining wall. A universal, modern design, this house floats above the landscape, providing a platform for viewing the gulf and the beach."

        Sanderling Beach Club
Siesta Key
Sarasota, Florida
1952-1953

"The Sanderling Beach Club is the first of Rudolph’s major non-residential projects to be constructed… With economy in mind, these structures are built of typical wood framing left partially exposed on the interior and finished with horizontal cypress siding on the exterior. The system of interconnected vaults relates the various programmatic elements into a single composition. The vaults are constructed of two layers of plywood sheathing with built-up roofing and braced below by standard two-by-four members in tension. Unlike at the vaulted Hook Guest House, the individual units at Sanderling are painted for protection from the salt air and to differentiate distinct construction materials. Ceilings are rendered dark blue while the framing and roof edge are painted white. The horizontal cypress siding is stained a neutral grey. In a similar fashion, the tower is constructed of wood framing painted white. Eight wood ribs form the shallow arc of the vault with thin wood lattice attached along the top as a minimal covering that allows for glimpses of the sky."

        Colonnade Condominiums
82 Grange Road
Singapore
1980-1987

"Conceived as a set of prefabricated units hoisted onto a structural frame, the Colonnade apartment tower is another attempt by Rudolph to design with prefab units, what he called the 'twentieth-century brick.' The original concept for this kind of structure dates back to the 1960s and particularly to his 1967 design for a Graphic Arts Center in lower Manhattan, which established the fundamental principles for his designs of tall buildings in the subsequent three decades.
Although for technical and financial reasons the Colonnade was built of pour-in-place concrete with conventional techniques rather than with prefabricated units, the final product retains much of the visual impact of the original concept."

The Concourse

        Concourse Complex (Beach Road I)
298 Beach Road
Singapore 199554
1981-1993

The fifteen-year history of the Concourse began in 1979 when Rudolph, in association with developer Hong Fok Investment Holding Company, won the competition to develop the site. Initially called Beach Road I, the first scheme went into construction in 1981. But four years later, with the substructures in place and the lower levels partly completed, the project came to a halt due to a recession in the local economy. Then in 1987, the developer asked Rudolph to design a second scheme, in keeping with the initial construction but accommodating a new distribution of the building program. In the first scheme the program was divided into three equal parts: one third office, one third residential, and one third commercial. In the second scheme the program requirements called for seventy percent office, fifteen percent residential hotel, and fifteen percent commercial retail space. In 1989 construction resumed.
With this second chance, Rudolph was able to rethink the character of the entire project, specifically that of the tower. He chose an octagonal plan for the tower, in keeping with local traditions [the number eight has connotations of happiness and well-being]. As in all of Rudolph’s tall buildings in Southeast Asia, the base of the Concourse tower is highly articulated: vertical structure exposed, the ground level shaken into many levels of activity, and the intricate body of the tower made up of highly developed clusters of units.
Ribbon windows, sunshades, and protruding eaves create a strong horizontal rhythm of light and shadow, which help unify the diverse elements of the complex.

        Bond Center (Now Lippo Center)
Hong Kong, China
1984-1988

“Hong Kong is an entirely different project. It is interesting in that it's being built on somebody else's foundations, and, therefore, the planning of Hong Kong is determined by foundations already poured in place. The owners changed because of the relationship with Red China and everybody got scared. They are totally commercial office buildings, unlike Jakarta, and therefore the ground rules are very different. Also there are a multiplicity of owners, unlike Dharmala, which is a corporate headquarters. It is like home to them, and, therefore, they take great interest in it. It's not that they don't take an interest in the Hong Kong projects. It's just that the ground rules are very, very different, about what you can and cannot do. The Hong Kong project is two towers and I wanted to connect them with interlacing bridges. I don't know whether you've ever seen any of those sketches or not. They wouldn't let me do that. The reason for that was the prime developer/owner said that he made a substantial part of his fortune in textiles in Indonesia as a matter of fact. He said all of his factories had interconnecting bridges that take material and people from one part to the other. He didn't want these office buildings to look like that. I was really disappointed. I couldn't get around that argument though I did try.”

Dharmala Sakti Building

        Dharmala Sakti Building
Jakarta, Indonesia
1982-1988

“I always see the site. Of course I went there. I did an interesting thing, at their suggestion, as a matter of fact. I told them that I wanted to get as clear an idea of vernacular architecture in that part of the world as possible. They took me to some villages nearby, but they also took me to a tourist park that had built about twelve structures from the Indonesian islands. They are very
distinctive architectural types. New Guinea is very different, of course, from Sumatra, and very different from Bali, and so on. They're all a little bit corny and you could tell what was supposed to be there and what wasn't. It wasn't perfect. I knew these things from photographs because I'd also done a little research. I had known certainly some of them but not all of them. To see them, even in their degenerated forms in a tourist village, was a fascinating thing. You can always see certain things in reality. That was very instructive for me. You could see the intent, let me put it that way. Quite often the detail wasn't as it should be. Sometimes they would fireproof things when they shouldn't. It's a little bit like Williamsburg; things get changed. It was very instructive to do that. After all, I could have taken six months and gone to two thousand islands or something but I didn't have the time.”

Another stunning example of converted use from ZECC Architecten. This one an old water tower in Utrech's Soest area (the map does not show the exact location of this building).

I think the heavily riveted basin ceiling in the kitchen is the killer feature here.
Tags: architecture, home, conversion, water tower, utrech

Map this on Platial

George Beeman House

Yes, this too is to remind me to write something -- it is a work in progress so I'll post my 'notes' here -- excuse the rough grammer and appearance for now!

This Second Empire home is the "George Beeman House" which was built in 1876.

George Beeman, originally from Steuben Co., N.Y., settled in Washtenaw County in the fall of 1836. In 1843 he moved here and purchased land in section 2, Wheatfield Township (110 acres), and subsequently 160 acres in section 1, on the opposite side of the road. The previous owner of the land in Section 1 had built a log house, which was destroyed by fire in 1846. After the destruction of his log house (and after building and renting out a shanty on the property for 2 years!) in 1848 Mr. Beeman built the frame dwelling still standing on the west side of Williamston Road for his own use.

In 1876, he erected this fine brick mansion across the street from his old house to provide a 'more suitable' home for his wife and family. An 1880 book (History of Ingham and Eaton Counties, Michigan by Samuel W. Durant) said, with typical understatement: "Mr. Beeman's buildings and improvements are equal to any in the township."

Of note concerning this building is the local legend that the Beeman House was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. This myth was spread by people who apparently had 'history impaired logic' as it is factually impossible. (Slavery was outlawed in the US by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, passed in December 1865. A house built in 1876 is 10 years too new to have been used to hide run-away slaves!)

As an interesting aside, the original records of Wheatfield Township, including those from Brutus Township (from which Wheatfield was separated out in 1840), unfortunately, were destroyed by the fire mentioned above. H.C. Davis the township clerk, was occupying Mr. Beeman's house, and had the records in his home when it was destroyed.

restoration/reclamation after rental period

Currently in private ownership. Still a working farm -- barn historic as well as house!

St. Mary's Catholic Church

The color photo on the left is as the building looks today, the monochrome photo on the right was taken circa 1907.
This text relies heavily on the historical plaque sited on this property, however, I have added information, and the editorializing is mine....

Beginning in the 1850s, Williamston Catholics worshipped with visiting priests. They often traveled ten miles by carriage or horseback on rutted, muddy roads to St. Patrick Church in Woodhull (present-day Shaftsburg) to worship.

In 1866 two brothers, Jerome and James Waldo (who were also instrumental in building the National Block Hotel, q.v.), entered into a contract with Detroit Bishop Peter Paul Lefevre, stipulating that they would sell a plot of land in the village of Williamston to the diocese for twenty-five cents, provided that a church worth at least one thousand dollars was built within three years. During the winter of 1868 - 69, Owen Brannan and Peter Zimmer cut and hauled timber to construct the first of three Catholic churches on this site. And in 1869 a frame church costing eleven hundred dollars was completed on this site and named Saint Mary. Saint Mary Church became a parish in 1879, upon the arrival of the first resident pastor, Father John Lovett.

From 1889 to 1898, despite its growing membership, the parish did not have a full-time priest and it became a mission. In 1895 the original wooden church burned. A larger, brick, Neo-Gothic building was erected the same year. (see photo) Under the leadership of Father John J. Connolly, who served from 1898 to 1905, Saint Mary regained parish status. It comprised the church: a cemetery, founded in 1873: and a new rectory, erected in 1902. In the 1920s and 1930, community activist and priest, Father Francis McCormick was the pastor of this parish, and he has left a lasting impression on the community, not only for his pastoral work, but also because he organized and spearheaded the reclamation of the city dump on the riverfront adjacent to the church, and helped turn it into the park which bears his name today.

In 1948 a parish hall was built and in 1956 a convent was established for the sisters of Saint Joseph who staffed the school that opened in 1959, and continues as a K-6 school today (although the nuns are gone).

The present church was built, and the gorgeous Gothic church razed in 1985, however, the old bells were preserved, and remain on the site and in use today.

Descendants of St. Mary's founding families continue to worship here.

Tags: church, architecture, history, Catholic

Map this on Platial

The Pagoda, Blackheath

Had some spare time today, so I thought I'd go and see the 18th century pagoda that the Greenwich Phantom wrote about so nicely in his blog. It really is worth a trip, even though it is a private house, so you'll have to make do with peering in from the pavement. It is quite tricky to find if you don't have a map (oops), and eventually I googled my way to it with the help of these instructions.
Tags: houses, architecture, pagoda, blackheath, blackheath pagoda

Map this on Platial
