RecordStore Globetrotter

Here you'll find an expanding database of Recordstore's,
for music such as electronica, folk, weirdfolk, IDM, glitch, alternative, industrial, breakcore, drumm 'n bass, downtempo, drone, trip hop, hip hop, dance, dub, experimental, noise, punk, post-punk, rock, post-rock jazz, blues, alt-country,funk en soul and so on.

in case anybody want to add a store, i'd appreciate if you do this correctly,

- after the name of the shop, place the city, and then the country
example : (Berlin, DE ) this makes it easier if you're browsing through the locations.
- also handy might be : the adres written in the comment section
- and in case you can : add a picture.
I'll be adding picture's as soon as I have some.

****please try to avoid multinationals*** it's against my policy, give the small shops a chance! they know what they are talking about.
Multinationals only know about money. not music...( even if they have good music in their stocks )

i hope this map becomes a great help to all you musicfreaks and recordjunkies out there!

peace

Plaatboef ( Rotterdam, NL )

        Nieuwe binnenweg 81A
Rotterdam,

The very first "Plaatboef" second hand record shop was opened by Dennis Meijer in the south side of Rotterdam in 1981. Soon after, in 1983, the Plaatboef moved to a small shop close to the centre of town, the Nieuwe Binnenweg 179. The location had been well known for a very famous record store "Bertus" in the 70's, now a large record and cd wholesale company. The shop kept on growing and had to move to Nieuwe Binnenweg 81, with 200 m2 floor space, in 1985. We now, in 2006, would like to move to a larger location, if only available in Rotterdam, because of all the records and cd's we buy daily. De Plaatboef is easy to reach, either by tram line 4 from Rotterdam Central Station or by car. Tickets for the parkingmeter are only available with a so-called "Chipknip", a digital way of paying or by credit card. A "Chipknip" is available at Nieuwe Binnenweg 127. The Plaatboef always has a stock of about 8000 records, 13000 cd's and 1000 DVD'S of which 90% is second-hand. We also stock a large quantity of 7" and 12" singles. Check our Plaatboef Newslog on the Homepage for the latest info on new stuff. All year round we have a sale of overstock records and cd's etc. The Nieuwe Binnenweg is Holland's most popular record street, with a total of 8 shops within a few hundred meters from each other. There's always something there for you to be found. The staff is multi-langual and speaks English and some German and French. The Plaatboef team is looking forward to see you in the shop.

Plato ( Rotterdam, NL )

Map this on Platial
Welcome! At 35 years old, Aquarius is the oldest independent record store in San Francisco. We try to only carry music we love, and we're always searching for more new, cool, weird and wonderful music. All of which we then share with you, our loyal customers! Here you can read a little bit about our history and our big move to the Mission district in 1996, peruse catalogs of records we carry, see a picture of Andee's bitchin' truck and photos of customers, and look at the latest New Arrivals list. If you'd like us to email this list to you every two weeks, by all means subscribe on our front page. And if you don't see what you want in our catalogs, please email the mailorder department because there's a good chance we may already have it or can order it for you.

Map this on Platial

Apop Records ( Columbia, MO )

Apop Records is an independently owned and operated record store whose purpose is to make available those recordings that are often over-looked by both the chain stores, and other independent shops. Apop is dedicated to providing the best music, both obscure and popular, to the widest audience possible. While you will find staple indie, punk, rock, etc releases at Apop, you'll also see titles available nowhere else. We do not limit what we carry to a specific genre, nor are we concerned with the latest fad, trend, or the fickle taste of the fashion music "underground". In addition to stocking cds and vinyl, one can also find a variety of literature, publications, tracts, and videos. We at Apop do not believe in the censoring of unpopular information and strive to make available products that express a multitude of ideas, beliefs and platforms. We cater neither to the left nor the right; for that matter Apop has no political ties, whatsoever. We are always searching for both new and old music, books, information to distribute, if you think we are missing something let us know. Nothing will be considered taboo.

Brabo Records (Antwerpen, BE )

Wally's Groove World ( Antwerpen, BE )

        WGW Store
Lange Nieuwstraat 126
2000 Antwerpen

in the early nineties as the first Deep House label in Belgium. It gained a lot of respect in the business and after numerous successful releases, a few offspring labels appeared in order to promote other music styles such as Break Beat and Tech House. By the end of the nineties Wally’s Groove World counted four sublabels (5 labels in total), an internet website and a second hand vinyl store. Wha? Roots, the more commercially minded sublabel hit the charts with Arsenal in 2003. On the other hand, less and less was released on the original Wally’s Groove World label due to the decreasing demand for house in that period. Early 2004, a new era started for the group as the second hand basement store closed its doors to reopen as a street-level underground dance store selling mostly new releases and dj equipment and a new WGW release is planned for 2005 with Optimus and Mayaku remixes of the Arbeit Adelt hit Death Disco.

In 2005 the focus is also set on the internet store. WGW is working on giving the site a new interface, a more sophisticated technical architecture and on collaborations with distributors to increase the web catalogue. These distributor collaborations should multiply the internet database by four to reach around 100.000 records by the end of this summer, and maybe even twice as much when reaching 2006. The goal is to obtain a fully professional extremely user-friendly website offering a huge database of rare, second hand and new releases. Thank you for being patient and remaining loyal to WGW.

Map this on Platial
Stinkweeds is an independently owned and operated music store and website with a serious slant towards independent labels and bands. We've been in business 19 years, and we're currently working out of our newest location at Central and Camelback in Phoenix. We have a wide variety of music, including indie-rock, electonica, jazz, blues, alt-country, experimental and reggae. A stage was added in 1996 in order to host in-store performances by bands like Blonde Redhead, Nada Surf, Red House Painters, Folk Implosion and Old Time Relijun. In addition to CDs, we stock tons of vinyl and DVDs, books and music magazines.

Since 1987, we've received tons of great press and support form our community here including several "Best Of" awards. Needless to say, everyone working here has a genuine love of music, and we pride ourselves on helping customers find music they love.

Map this on Platial

Dandelion Records ( Aarhus C, DK )

In 1973 a freshly qualified young student from Cambridge University in England moved to Denmark because of a girl.....
He liked the city of Aarhus, but found no decent record shops. So he decided to open a very different kind of music store in the old cobbled-street area of the city centre.

Dandelion Records was extremely alternative from its conception (Lol Coxhill, Kevin Coyne, Lee Perry, etc.) and by 1978 had become Danish distributor of several punk, new-wave and alternative record companies; as well as trying to introduce independent reggae labels onto the Danish market.

Lakeshore Alternative Music ( rochester, NY )

In 1985, the Lakeshore Record Exchange was being sold by a man who wanted to retire from the store who had established the business over the course of many years. Another entrepreneur (our man Andrew) bought the Lakeshore Record Exchange and has been managing it ever since. In 1995, when the Internet was still new and eCommerce had yet to become a buzzword, Andrew bought the domain name AlternativeMusic.com and designed a site himself to put on the Internet. From those humble beginnings, AlternativeMusic.com has grown and shifted over the years.

Realizing that he didn't want AlternativeMusic.com to compete against Internet Giants like Amazon and CDNow (or the many companies that would attempt to de-throne them), he decided that Alternativemusic.com would continue to do what it has always done since it was first born on the internet...

It is a place where people can find and buy almost any piece of Alternative Music they want. This niche market has been the core business of AlternativeMusic.com and Lakeshore Record Exchange. Customer service that goes the extra mile and employees that live and love the music are the hallmarks of this business.

While at Lakeshore Record Exchange's store in Rochester, New York, USA, you can not only buy CD's, you can sell them as well. You can listen to almost any item in the store on listening stations located right there in the store. You can buy industry related and alternative culture related magazines, posters, t-shirts, stickers, and more. Lakeshore Record Exchange is a small business that understands its market and who it is serving. It isn't pretentious. It doesn't have high profit margins, or a corporate attitude. It has been and continues to be about alternative music and helping people find that music.

AlternativeMusic.com has a fantastic following on the Internet with alternative music collector's who can't find what they are lookingfor. To us, that speaks volumes. We would like the chance to serve you also.

If you have any suggestions about AlternativeMusic.com, please drop us an email and tell us.

If you are ever in the neighborhood, please drop by. We would love to meet you.

Map this on Platial

Rough Trade ( London, UK )

Rough Trade began trading in 1976 at 202 Kensington Park Road, Notting Hill.
Originally specialising in US and Jamaican imports, it soon became one of the leading outlets for the burgeoning punk scene, and subsequently a Mecca for anyone buying or selling new DIY new wave music and fanzines.
In 1978, Rough Trade Records was born. The first release was Paris Marquis by Metal Urbain, soon to be followed with releases by Stiff Little Fingers, Swell Maps, The Raincoats, Cabaret Voltaire...
A mixture of rapid growth and management inexperience caused the shop and label businesses to separate in 1982. As a result, the shop moved round the corner to 130 Talbot Road and the label went on to sign some band called The Smiths.
In 1987, we opened a second store, together with Slam City Skates, at 16 Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden.
International stores (Paris and Tokyo) soon followed but under the weight of global recession, closed for lunch and never re-opened.
The same fate fell upon the label…Rough Trade Records went out of business in the early 90s, but like a phoenix from the ashes, triumphantly returned nine years later with Geoff Travis once again at the helm.
We, Rough Trade shops, celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2001 with a series of gigs and the release of a commemorative CD compilation. The same year, we also received an award from Music Week in recognition of our unique contribution to the British Music Industry (following the likes of Richard Branson).
Earlier last year, we quietly launched The Album Club – a truly unique and original service that manages to distil all of our heritage, experience and expertise, to provide the finest music delivery service available.
Together with this, our new store website, plus of course our two London stores, we proudly continue to deliver the definitive music shop experience.

Map this on Platial

PSF Modern Music Records - Tokyo, JP

        2-45-11-201 Matsubara
Setagaya, Tokyo 156-0043

See website for directions in Engish.

Record store for famous PSF label.
Psychedelic, free jazz, experimental, noise

"The very best in Japanese underground psychedelic music, including High Rise, White Heaven, Ghost, Musica Transonic, Acid Mothers Temple, Keiji Haino, Fushitsusha, and folk legends Kan Mikami and Kazuki Tomokawa.

Also available are free jazz and improvisational musicians such as Motoharu Yoshizawa, Masayuki Takayanagi, and Kaoru Abe. In addition are international free style musicians like Harry Bertoia, Charles Gayle, AMM, Borbetomagus and Mike Wilhelm.

P.S.F. reveals the depth, diversity and vitality of the Japanese underground music scene. Its archive chronicles a national treasure of free jazz and maverick rock that explodes the myth of Japanese conformity.

P.S.F. Records originated in the Tokyo record shop Modern Music, which opened in 1980, and took its name from the 1985 album Psychedelic Speed Freaks by High Rise. At the time there were a lot of innovative groups around who had no chance of being released by a major label. P.S.F. was started out of a desire to capture some of these precious tunes on record.

Renowned founder Hideo Ikeezumi says "I only release what I like, and I hope that some of these sounds will appeal to the more discerning listener."

P.S.F. also publishes the highly respected G-Modern, a quarterly magazine on avant-garde underground music. "

Record Collector opened its doors in Iowa City in 1982. It offers a broad selection of vintage and contemporary music, emphasizing the non-mainstream, scarce, and otherwise harder to find items that most stores don't stock. This includes both new and used records and cd's.

Map this on Platial

Stickfigure Distribution

Based in Atlanta, started in Winter of 1992 to cater to the underground scene of independent music. Its roots were in the new sub-culture rising in the 90s. Many of musical genres, such as hardcore, math rock, and emo, were difficult to find in an average record store. It was started by Gavin Frederick who was a radio dj for Georgia Tech. He would play many obscure bands that were not played on popular radio stations.

Map this on Platial

K-RAA-K

(K-RAA-K)3 is a grass-roots organisation that offers presentation and development possibilities in left field music. It's hard to describe the functioning of (K-RAA-K)3 because the combination of our work strategies differs from most other organisations. We see ourselves as a quality platform, a promotor for young artists who are working within uncommon genres as avant-rock, psych, experimental electronica, free-jazz, new folk, improdrones,... We organise small 'lab-evenings', bigger presentation moments and creation possibilities. With a monthly mini-magazine we also try to support the experimental scene with documentation and promotion. Therefor we could be called a new style music organisation that tries to work within a variety of niches and tries to support those niches and their artists as good as possible. (K-RAA-K)3 and adventure are a synonymic. We want to surprise, present new stuff, or approach music from alternative direction. The most important arguments for our artistic choices are how captivating or innovative the bands are.

Map this on Platial

Wisdom Records -- THE source for reggae, dub, and dancehall. That's all they do. And they do it well. Run by rastas, with a single listening station, way the f* out on Mission Street, almost to Daly City... well, actually, not quite that far out, which always throws me as I overshoot it when I'm trying to find it. Look hard. It's upstairs, you have to ring the buzzer to get buzzed in, and the sign is SMALL. Lots of 7" as well as 12".

Map this on Platial

Sigma Sound / Philadelphia International Records 309 Studio

        The Sound of Philadelphia

Just as Motown and Stax were closely associated with a specific sound from a specific city (Detroit and Memphis) in the 1960s, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff created "The Sound Of Philadelphia" in the 1970s, catapulting Philadelphia International Records (PIR) to worldwide fame.

Kenneth Gamble (born 1943 in Philadelphia) was a background singer and lyricist who first met Leon Huff (born 1942 in Camden, NJ) in 1962 at Philadelphia’s Shubert Theatre. They complimented each other as songwriter and pianist. Eventually, Gamble and Huff became members of a local band, the Romeos, along with Thom Bell, who later became a famous songwriter and producer.

Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff collaborated on a number of earlier R&B songs, but the pop hits did not arrive until 1966 with the Intruders and Soul Survivors' We'll Be United, Together, Cowboys To Girls, and Expressway To Your Heart among others. They also wrote and produced Atlantic hits for Archie Bell & the Drells and Wilson Pickett. But most of all, they were instrumental in reviving the career of ex-VeeJay singer, Jerry Butler in 1967 with hits like Only The Strong Survive, What's The Use Of Breaking Up and Hey Western Union Man on the Mercury record label. These Jerry Butler records really set the scene for what was to come: silk voices singing in high register, a tight rhythm section and lush string arrangements. Gamble got the entrepreneurial bug and started his own record company in 1967, but it folded due to distribution and collection issues common to small record labels. He next tried his hand co-founding Neptune Records with Huff in 1969. Wiser from the first experience he signed a national distribution deal with Chess Records.

In 1969, the Neptune label was founded and distributed through Chess Records. Although Neptune released only 4 albums, it marked the starting point for Gamble and Huff's collaboration. Upon recommendation by the Intruders, they also brought in the O'Jays. And in 1970, Thom Bell joined the label as an arranger, writer, producer and musician. By 1971, Chess Records involvement with Soul Music declined, so Gamble and Huff signed a national distribution, music catalog and financial deal with CBS Records, then changed the company name to Philadelphia International Records (PIR). Though no longer an independent record label, with distribution and financial issues behind them, PIR was now free to go in the positive message artistic directions it desired.

In the 1970s, Gamble and Huff puzzled together dance rhythms, orchestral arrangements, and positive topical lyrics that established a musical signature having sophisticated soulful orchestration. It was lovingly called, The Sound Of Philadelphia. Recording most of The Sound Of Philadelphia at the Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, PIR was finally prepared for lift-off.

The O'Jays finally hit it big in 1972 with Back Stabbers. The O'Jays continued rolling out the hits with Love Train and For the Love of Money in the 1970s. Other prominent acts on the PIR label were Billy Paul (Me and Mrs Jones) and Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes (If You Don't Know Me By Now and The Love I Lost), Blue Magic, The Spinners, Jean Carn, The Spinners (Could it Be That I'm Falling in Love), Stylistics (Betcha by Golly, Wow) and Delfonics (Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time). Philadelphia International Records soon became a force in the Soul Music market and even drew praise from musical rivals.

As PIR rolled out the hits, Stax Records imploded and Motown's record identity tarnished a bit after moving from Detroit to LA. Soon it became easier for PIR to attract top artists like The Jacksons, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls and Phyllis Hyman. They nearly signed the Temptations after they left Motown in 1976.

Able to anticipate market trends, PIR helped create the disco craze when it introduced The Hustle by Van McCoy in 1974. They also had good karma. Producer and songwriter Richard Barrett is credited with bringing the Three Degrees to PIR in 1973. A short time later, Don Cornelius, producer and host of Soul Train asked the Three Degrees to do vocals for the show's new theme track, with instrumentals by MFSB. Thus, The Sound Of Philadelphia) became a huge disco hit in 1974 and known the world over as Soul Train's theme song.

Storm clouds came their way. In 1975, charges were brought against Huff for offering Payola in exchange for airplay. The charges were dropped in 1976, but Gamble was fined $2,500 in related matters, which tarnished the record company's reputation. It’s unclear why they were singled out, particularly since Payola, often non-monetary, was common in the industry. Then in 1982, mega-star sex symbol Teddy Pendergrass smashed his car into a highway divider, paralyzing him from the waist down and body slamming his recording career.

There was a bit of good news. In 1983 Patti LaBelle released the I'm in Love Again album and it reached gold status. Unfortunately, it was the last PIR album to reach gold.

By 1985, the hits ebbed and Philadelphia International Records switched its distribution to Manhattan (a Capitol subsidiary). Still struggling to get more radio airtime, publicity and record store shelf space, they switched to BMG in 1991 -- again without much success. The 1990s were not kind to most record labels, so no one should be surprised at the difficulties PIR encountered.

The prominence of PIR was usurped by a new generation of record labels. Nevertheless, PIR set benchmarks for community relations and style as Gamble and Huff maintained a Philadelphia record label rather than move to LA or New York. Gamble-Huff Music, the successor company to PIR, has a well-earned place on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts and Philly loves them back. The renowned Philadanco Dance Company recently presented a new work set to vintage music from Philadelphia International Records.

Map this on Platial

Vinyl Solution is arguably the best venue in the county for punk vinyl. The biggest treasures are the 7-inch vinyl collectible singles displayed on the walls. Southern California bands like X, the Misfits, the Cramps and the Stitches (guitarist Johnny Witmer works at the store) are heavily represented here. On a recent visit, items in the 99-cent row included Simple Minds and Peter Murphy, while the most expensive item was a $100 Ritchie Valens greatest hits album. Owner Darren O'Conner opened the store in 1989.

Map this on Platial

Rotate This! (Toronto, CA)

        Rotate This
620 Queen St. W.
Toronto, ON, Canada
M6J 1E4

Music makes us happy. And we still like to have fun.

We're one of Toronto's leading and best known independent record stores. We stock new releases from independent bands and artists from Canada, the U.S., England, and around the world. We're committed (actually, obsessed would be more accurate) with stocking as much of this on vinyl as is possible.

Genre-wise, we're down with almost everything: the hip, the hop, the punk, the jazz, the hardcore, the reggae, the electronic, the indie, the un-indie. No classical or nu-country, however.

Rotate This is an equal-genre retailer. We do not exclude titles from stock based on race, creed, culture, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. We might not, however, stock a title we feel is not appropriate for our store, for any number of reasons. You want Brittany? Wicked, so do we. But we don't sell her records. (Well, ok, maybe the UK 12"ers but please don't tell anyone).

We stock used vinyl as well, although the turnover is extremely high, and we find it difficult to keep much stock. If you're looking to rid yourself of your dusty old record collection in exchange for some $$s, we'd be more than happy to take a look. We are rather picky though, so please don't bring in your Poco lps.

We're also an official ticket outlet for most of the major concert promoters in town.

Next time you're out music shopping, and you're looking for stuff that you just can't find at the mall, definitely stop by. We swear that we won't judge your purchases. Honest! (Kidding!) (No, really!)

are super expensive. Neil Young's on the beach costs 25 euro's
Pink Floyd's The Wall costs 6 euro. And if they'd have moondog... it'd be 200 euro's or more.

this is a collectors store, one of it's kind in Belgium or maybe even Europe
just go inside and smell the Vinyl

Map this on Platial

Map this on Platial

Rare Records ( Eindhoven, NL )

        Bergstraat 36B
Eindhoven

Rare Records was officially founded in June 1994 as a record finding service. Although some of the founders already were busy doing all kind of things in the music business, the first initiative using the name Rare Records was the start of a mail-order service. With customers from Australia to the US, from Russia to South America, Rare Records grew out to be one of the most important record suppliers of many dj's and record collectors.

After this initial success, Rare Records The All Style Dance Store was started in July 1995. Up till today this is still one of the most important specialized Dance stores in this area, with daily customers from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and even the UK.

Rare Records can be found at two locations. The first is our store in Eindhoven. The second location is our warehouse in Budel. This is the place where your products are ordered, stored and shipped. At our offices in Budel we work very hard to purchase the best releases and make sure they are delivered to you as soon as possible.

To serve our customers even better, Rare Records the website was launched. Although not the first record store on the net, Rare Records will sure try to be one of the best. We have tried to create an online store for people who truly love music, but also appreciate good service and fast delivery.

When we were developing Rare Web we started thinking what we could do for our customers besides our store. We started discussing a dj community for all dj's and artists around the world and slowly but certain Rare DJ was born.

At this time we are still improving and developing all our activities to make sure that the future of Rare Records is even better than our history!

Map this on Platial
Say hello to Peter Zeigelmeyer, Proprietor.

_________________

For a very long time now, I've been jonesin' for one of those cool-looking Gado Gado sweatshirts with the tribal design on the sleeves and the long pointy swirly hoods that I see in Ceiba's window when I pass by the store...maybe in red.

Touring Ceiba with Peter Ziegelmeier and Marie is a worldwide affair: local designers Dreamtime, Eka, and Space Turtle; Hikari from Japan; Psylo/Israel; Gado Gado/Austria; Nuclear Star/Italy; Quantum Leap & Mido from Bali all compete for my Mastercard's attention. But my favorite items in the store at the moment has got to be those stash belts by Hipsterr SF (modeled by Marie at right), which are like old-west gun holsters of wonderfully crafted leather but instead of gun holsters you get pockets for all of your raver or just-plain-boring-old-daily needs. These are way hipper than the standard fanny-pack, that's for damn sure, and I'll bet no one ever broke up with/refused to go out with/beat up someone for wearing a Hipsterr.

Furry playa coats by Simone Schulz and an interesting selection of jewlery by Gina Pfanz round out the offerings of a bit of each type of gear you might need for an overnight dance party or just a hard day of urban living.

If you're wondering where the music comes in, Peter founded Ceiba Records in 1996 and produces psytrance, progressive trance, and downtempo ambient music; listen and buy in the back of the store or on the website.
