A Map of the known locations of any of the 7000 Oak trees planted as part of German artist Joseph Beuys' sculpture project entitled 7000 Oaks, begun in 1982 in Kassel, Germany.

"7000 Oaks is a sculpture referring to peoples' life, to their everyday work. That is my concept of art which I call the extended concept or art of the social sculpture." – Joseph Beuys

"7000 Eichen", Joseph Beuys

"Joseph Beuys never lived in Kassel, but his name is inseparably tied to the city. No other work of art is so thoroughly and lastingly integrated into the topographic and social structure of the city. The planting of a tree alongside a basalt stone in 7,000 points of Kassel began in 1982, as a contribution to Documenta 7, and was finished in 1987, for Documenta 8 [after Beuys's death]."
(actually I'm not sure where this photo was taken)
Beuys lives on in recent "documenta":

1,031 Trees in Cass Lake, Minnesota (planted in 1997)

In Cass Lake, a reservation town in Northern Minnesota, 1,031 seedlings were planted representing approximately one tree per resident. The planting itself took place over a one-week period in late May 1997. Residents themselves determined where the trees were sited -- on their own property as well as on public land -- and were actively involved in the planting as well. In conjunction with the 1997 show "Joseph Beuys Multiples" at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Project was coordinated by independent curator Todd Bockley with support from the Visual Arts Department, as well as the Education Department's Teen Programs and Community Programs.

Beuys's project, "7000 Oaks - City planting instead of city planning", was begun in 1982 at Documenta 7, the large international art exhibition in Kassel, Germany. His plan called for the planting of seven thousand trees, each paired with a columnar basalt stone approximately four feet high above ground, throughout the greater city of Kassel.

Map this on Platial
Some of Beuys's "7000 oaks" are planted in Wolfsanger-Hasenhecke, a 1200-year-old town that became part of Kassel in 1936.
On October 3, 1943, "Erntedanktag" ("Harvest-Thanksgiving-Day"), Allied bombs entirely destroyed the town.
